    LYRICS
He was a bastard, even though he knew his daddy
Even had his daddy’s angry eyes
Brown as the whiskey that ran through both their veins
I turned eighteen the day I took his name
I was a young girl, raised up being lonely
He was the first boy to look my way
My ticket out mighta took me straight to hell
But I take some of that blame and I shoulder it myself
Because I saw in him, what he saw in me
A broken limb from a crooked family tree
When you got that kinda history it’s hard to break free
When broken’s all you know it’s all you know how to be
When life is unkind to mothers and fathers
Their sons and daughter often grow up just as hard
We had a baby and oh I loved him dearly
So I saw clearly the choice that must be made
I hope that family holds him like I couldn’t
It was the only way I knew to get him raised
So I wouldn’t have to see in him what I see in me
A broken limb from a crooked family tree
When you got that kinda history it’s hard to break free
When broken’s all you know it’s all you know how to be
When broken’s all you know it’s all you know how to be

A crushingly sad song from a songwriter of incredible talent and the perfect voice for her music. I nearly said "Wow!" aloud midway through.

What if she was gay? What would y’all write then? (Edited for clarification.)

Hey! Not sure exactly what you mean, but I feel like that would be a different song. Or maybe that’s one version of this song. She hooked up with this guy just to get out of a bad situation, which just lead to another bad situation. I don’t think she’s had the chance to even get away from trauma long enough to breath much less figure out who she is and what she wants or give any energy to that

@@erinenderlinofficial I love that you’re taking her lyrics to heart. Just hope folks would still like her writing if she loved a woman, so she wouldn’t have to write songs like this one just to sell them. 🌹

Rio Del Sol I’m sorry but I’m really confused, I wrote this song and I’m singing it. I didn’t write this song in any particular way “just to sell it” I wrote it to tell a particular story inspired by actual women’s stories that I had the pleasure of working with years ago

@@erinenderlinofficial Well then, hello! And thank you for the lovely music. I’m a HUGE fan and can’t believe it’s actually you. I’m sure grateful-and amazed, that it is. There’s nothing in this world wrong with what you’re writing or singing...not implying that, whatsoever! I just wouldn’t want anyone to ever feel like they had to do something they don’t. I’m an old guy-that’s my boy in the picture and he’s 60. He set this TH-cam thing up for me and has been showing me how to use it. Not that long ago, my wife had a friend that had spent a long time not being honest in her professional life, but then she decided it hadn’t been worth it. When she finally got brave enough, there were some ugly conversations, but seemed happy to everyone right up until she committed suicide. That’s not a story many want to know, but it’s also something that needs to be said sometimes. I was thinking of her when I read the comments about how beautiful your music is, and I just thought, well, I wonder if people would still think they were so lovely if she was singing about a woman. Or would the work just get pigeon-holed so she couldn’t work? It pretty much breaks my heart to think of your songs not existing in my life. I feel the same way about every great artist, no matter who they ever loved-or didn’t. I hope that’s clear as mud. Thank you for responding, but you sure didn’t need to for an old cuss like me. It’s a lot of back and forth for you to have to worry with when I just wasn’t clear in my first response!
