Beautiful train. My mom and I took the chief every August from Stockton to Bakersfield on our way to Los Angeles. On our return trip in 1962, our train hit a sugar beet truck trailer just outside Bakersfield. It derailed our engine. With over 100 degree weather, we had to wait for an engine out of Bakersfield to push us down the line to Stockton. Train got there at midnight. We were in the lounge car at the time of the accident, and I remember being thrown from my seat onto the floor. The lounge attendant and the engineer had to be taken to the hospital. The lounge attendant had been standing in the bar area which had a glass wall full of glass shelves and glasses. Despite this accident, I still enjoy riding trains. Of course, the was nothing like the chief again. Ty for posting on yt.
This is the Sant Fe of legend. Santa Fe, all the way! I remember seeing the chiefs at Dearborn station as a little kid as my dad drove down Clark street.

I live by the old berkeley ca depot . I never thought that the super chief or the golden stopped there or to later know that it bisected berkeley running down Sacramento st down into 40th and sanpablo where it had the oakland depot
2:41 The reason that Pennsylvania tour sleeper was put on the head-end of the Cal Zephyr was to preserve radio/PA communication between cars, which many foreign cars did not have. Placing a foreign car in the middle would isolate the audio between front section of Zephyr cars and the rear section--and you don't want to miss the call for dinner.
Great to see vintage shots of the Stockton Subdivision, in a region I'm very familiar with, South of my hometown of Sacramento, CA. Thanks for sharing.
I've seen some of this at BAERA Friday meetings in Berkeley a long time ago. It looks so much better with sound. The biggest thing I recall learning was the gleam that Santa Fe's cars had. Another thing I learned about was the Santa Fe bus service from Bakersfield to LA, Barstow and a third location. Good memories, Thx
Thanks for posting this. It brings back fond memories. In the early/mid 60's, when I was a kid, I traveled with my grandparents a couple of times 'back east' to Missouri. Two trips from Hanford to Kansas City and return on the San Francisco Chief. On one trip, we continued on from KC to Jonesboro AR on Frisco Lines, and from KC to Joplin on Missouri Pacific on the second trip. Travel on the SF Chief was, by far, the most luxurious. Now, in my twilight years, these are among my most precious memories.
Probably the most famous and probably my favorite of Santa Fe locomotives is the Alco PA passenger diesel. There are only four of these engines left in existence two of them are in operating condition in Mexico and two are in the United States undergoing restorations back to operating condition The Nickel Plate 190 is nearly complete at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland Oregon. In my state of Texas, the Museum of the American Railroad has begun restoring former Santa Fe PA locomotive number 59 its latest update, was the installation of a new cab
Great video and great narration. I'm building a switching layout of the Santa Fe in Fresno around Ventura Ave and that single clip will definitely help when it comes to completing that scene.
1952 was very early to withdraw steam. In the UK and Western Europe only a handful of mainline diesels existed though diesel mechanical switchers were common by this time
I was confused by the several narration references to "eastbound" trains running between Stockton and Bakersfield. To the best of my knowledge, the Santa Fe line between Stockton and Bakersfield is on a more or less north-south orientation. Great rare footage. Thanks
@@jerrywaynehoward7442 It is still east that is the only way on the Santa Fe to go east to Chicago, is to go geographically south first, but the trains are still eastbound
If there is more footage I can find between Richmond and Bakersfield yes, I would like to talk about ATSF’s tugboat fleet and car ferries out of Richmond, however at this point I have not found enough footage to make anything that would be a complete program.
