  • Sunlight and moisture are the main culprits the tanning (browning) of your books. We can move our books away from the sun but how about the moisture in the air? It's everywhere! My solution is sealing them in ziplock bag. Why ziplock? Because it's easy to remove and replace your book in the bags and reduce the need of sticky tape. Also, it reduces the chance of silverfish eating up your books.
    Introducing the perfect-size ziplock bags from Books n Bobs. We have 3 sizes available: S, M & L. Their prices are:
    - Size S: 25pcs @ RM9.90
    - Size M: 18pcs @ RM9.90
    - Size L: 10pcs @ RM6.90

    interesting, but would you recommend sealing completely or leaving an inch or so open to allow books to breath? The bags certainly keep dust and contaminants away from the paper, but do you noy think a little ventilation will help? I have some dustcovers that are printed with some sort of ink that seems to adhere to the plastic, and over the years causes the colours to adhere to the bag, removing it from the dustcover. Humidity is the killer here, maybe silica gel or similar may help? In the UK we had low humidity and rarely got any mold or similar, however here in Asia, the humidity is the real destroyer of books.

    Hello, nice to see a fellow book lover/collector sharing her good care tips. I am ziplocking books at the moment ^_^ I guess Malaysia wet weather makes it harder to keep them clean than in Europe. Are you going to do book reviews too ?

      Thanks! Malaysia's weather is a book's worst enemy! I do book review once a while on my FB page but I have not been sharing them on TH-cam.

    Or you could put the book upside down so that the extra plastic is tucked in the bottom not the top.

    Would you put a rare or expensive comic into one of those bags - maybe not?

    I recommend to re-seal it using a clear plastic with self adhesive.. Zip locks look so odd

    Would adding silica gel on the top inside the bag help to last longer?

    • @booksnbobs
      @booksnbobs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Sorry for the late reply, I'm not very active on TH-cam. Yes, silica get would definitely help but best practice is to air the books regularly.

    after 4 years, do you still recommend this method?

    • @booksnbobs
      @booksnbobs  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do. But you must take the books out of the bag to air regularly. The bag stops moisture from getting in but it also traps moisture in the bag.

    Does it mean that putting books inside plastic bags are really helpful to prevent humidity? I live in the philippines with the tropical weather we have, my home's humid is always at 60-70, and I collect manga books and I they easily fox, so I started putting them in plastic bags. I hope I could at least delay the foxing and yellowing by doing this 🙏🏻

      @@pastelmacaroon so Zip locks help with keep books looking new rather than turning them yellow?

    • @pastelmacaroon
      @pastelmacaroon หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@kkg108 no, it can nurture mold if you live in humid areas. If you want the least possible yellowing, do what I've been doing for ~2 years now:
      -keep them in a dark place (awayyy from sunlight/windows, and away from direct artificial lighting, LED light bulbs are better than fluorescent)
      -use silica gel packs (cheaper than a dehumidifier)
      -maintain cool temperature
      -keep your room/manga area clean, dust the shelves occasionally and vacuum or sweep the floors every day
