    Writing on the pages of the books is totally a personal preference. It's not something bad, but if you don't like writing on the pages, that's fine and if you love to(like I do) then go ahead, there is nothing bad. Just take care of the books properly.

      @@Callander i love buying a used book and seeing that it was a gift to someone years ago. makes me happy to know that the book was so well loved and now i get to enjoy it. i bought a used stephen king book and the note on the inside was so heartfelt, and dated all the way back to 1980. crazy. i read it a few months ago for the first time. so 42 years later the book is still being read and enjoyed. so crazy to think about lol

      @@divad44 it's my favorite thing (besides the price 🤣) about used books. i love seeing people's little comments and thoughts, the things they found important enough to highlight or underline, and comparing it to what i would. it's a special treat, like a meta story (about that person) within the story.

    I highlight, write, underline in my books and i dont think there's any problem with that. I think that's important to be honest because doing so makes you recognize or remember parts of the book that made an impact on you or you learned something new, an idea or a person that is influential that you want to learn more about.

    I like all the tips except the one on writing. Writing something , at least the name is a way of personalising the book. Books can be kept horizontally too, especially paperbacks. Books should never be lent- no question of thinking twice.

    Is storing books horizontally bad for spines as much as people say?

    • @KC-pc4iq
      @KC-pc4iq 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What I've always been told is to focus on the spine and do your best to ensure there's not even the slightest bend (left/right if vertical; up/down if horizontal--although I think you'd have to go out of your way to get a spine bending upwards in a horizontal stack, hah). In theory, yes, horizontal stacking is far more likely to put stress on the spines but as long as they're positioned thoughtfully, I wouldn't worry about it.

    • @robertphillips93
      @robertphillips93 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flat is fine for most books, as there's a wide distribution of weight across the side of the volume. But many older and some newer hardcover books are rounded and backed -- the spine is given a convex shape and the shoulders of the text block are mechanically flared to accommodate the thickness of cover boards. This produces a volume able to resist "falling down" on the shelf when stored vertically, but more prone to damage of the cover along the hinge. Heavy volumes especially are prone to failure even when shelved vertically, since mass-produced books seldom have enough strength to withstand the effects of pulling on the top of the book with fingertips. Push such books out from the shelf until they can be grasped at the spine comfortably.

    • @aan2538

      Because it looks ugly, most likely, if it's written by pen or marker. It's better to make your personal stamp and mark books by it.

      It's not a bad thing but if a book owner wants to sell a book, I think it may affect the value, especially if someone else is buying a 'special' book, one perhaps now out of print or rare, as a gift for someone else. 🙂

    I'm a big fan of writing in my books, notes, my name, other names, comments, and funny pictures. If I have something "very" "very" "very" rare of historical I'll think twice before writing but otherwise I will continue to write in them. But I(more or less) agree with the rest.
