I remember an interview with her about it and she said she wasn’t calling any of the people actually stupid but that the were acting stupid in order to please men.
This woman was my role model growing up, i discovered her music when i was 11, no one understood why i looked up to her. She made me feel confident enough to be comfortable with being an outsider. I am who I am because when everyone was pushing me to be a normal, feminine girl, she made me feel comfortable being a tomboy. When i hated myself for not being able to fit in with the other girls, when i got bullied at school, when my mother couldn't accept me being gay, her music made me feel like i wasn't alone, her music gave me strength. I'm 23 now, I still look up to her and I still love her music. I have so much respect for this Woman.
I don’t understand how or why your mum couldn’t accept you being gay. If my daughter was gay or bisexual, it wouldn’t make any difference to me. It doesn’t change who she is or how much I love her.
The song holds the message of girls being valuable individuals as they are without changing themselves under the pressure of mainstream standards, which can make you stray away from what you originally want and damage you, it was really empowering and confidence boosting to listen to it as a little girl, still does
Nah, its just the ultimate nOt LiKe ThE oThEr GirLs anthem. Making fun of eating disorders, of Paris Hilton being a victim of revenge porn when her sex tape was leaked and just girl who want to be feminine is not empowering. Im glad feminism moved away from girly = bad and sporty = good.
What stuck with me most about this is she says "I'm so glad that I'll never fit in that will never be me, outcasts and girls with ambition that's what I want to see" has always been the best line of this song
Yep, always inspires me to study harder than ever to pass my exams with flying colours. I'm not a sports kinda girl, but I have great ambition for filming and that line always keeps me going to achieve my dream of getting into the film industry.
The lyrics literally say "maybe if I ACT like that", it's not, and has never been, an attack on being a 'girly girl' - it's about being FAKE to get attention. In other words: it's ok to be a tomboy, it doesn't make you any less of a woman, and it's also ok to be feminine, just don't reduce yourself into thinking your worth relies - entirely - on your sex appeal. It doesn't.
Ok, when a guy acts fake that okay? You’re alright with being fake with females. Though when ya females do it. We’re either sluts, Thots, or fake. Like, instead of making them have to think that if they needed to act that way. Maybe they wouldn’t have to change. Change isn’t being fake honestly, change is adapting so they can be accepted. I can also see the point why you feel you have to call people ‘FAKE’ though when a guy gets mad for a girl who doesn’t have a butt or boobs, they know they can’t exactly change that in seconds. You don’t always see guys getting attacked by they’re appearance and how they act. Though yeah, you probably haven’t been in a situation like this to understand majority of the people here. So you should stop calling them fake just because of one day they’re this and then the next that. Like think why the person is acting that way instead of immediately going off at them.
It's okay to be girly, I think this video is just a reminder to make sure you're doing it for the right reasons. Don't throw away your personality/ambition, especially to become some guy's object.
she had a good idea, but the video is a mess From internalized misogyny, to jokes about eating disorders, to stereotyping women, this video appeals more to the patriarchy than it does feminism. "It's okay to label and shame women cause they already do it to themselves"
@@Melissa31832 It's called a parody. She is using stereotypes on purpose, to criticize the behavior of some girls who dumb themselves down to please men and seek popularity. Those girls only reinforce patriarchal values. Everyone should be held accountable for their stupid actions. Women included.
Request addressed to P!nk: Please bring back this kind of attitude and sound🙏🙏🙏Us mature ladies (50+) and young girls need all that was on this album and more. Love and blessings to you!
What’s funny is that she just reacted to this video not that long ago and she said “I love making fun of people 😂 I also love making fun of myself... hahaha, I’m such an asshole” we have no choice but to stan.
Uncharted Raider pink said this song is about stupid women who do shit to please men. People aren't stupid for getting surgery or dressing a certain way. If it makes someone happy who the fuck am I to judge??
Yeah she talks about how Paris confronted her about the song, and Paris said "I'm not really stupid, I just act stupid". And Pink was like that's the point of the song.
Not to be and only ACT?? nobody can show herself a stupid if she is not really a stupid. To spend all life as stupid thing its not normal for person, even u think its only your role for money.
I definitely agree that this has beeeeeeeennnnnnnnn relevant, though it wasn't ahead of it's time... It's just still happening unfortunately. Maybe even worse now! Cause now we know it's not just girls😅
It's how society was then and is even more prevalent now. Its even worse because you have onlyfans models making millions while hard working intelligent women make nothing. Bimboness is being celebrated so of course women will use it to make money. No shame to them take advantage of the men causing society to be this way by all means... but it doesn't make it right or fair. It's harder now to be woman, or at least as bad, more importantly a woman outside society's beauty standards, then it was in the 50s.
This song isn’t insulting girls just because they change themselves, it’s insulting girls who change themselves just to get attention from men. It’s encouraging girls being true to themselves and what they really want.
Y'all have to understand that in the 2000s, the height of the "bimbo starlet" had the world in a chokehold. Pink's not criticizing their femininity or sex appeal, she's criticizing their facade; hiding their intelligence to come off as submissive or "cute" for lucrative gain. The damage is young girls watching shows like The Simple Life and aspiring to become that unaware that it's an act. If anything, this song is much more relevant now than ever especially with the current artifice of social media "influencers". The message still stands the same as in 2006; we should aspire for more rather than shallow, inauthentic appeal.
And she's being critical of that culture that bullied and attacked whoever didn't conform. The youngsters didn't live those awful times so they don't understand the context.
So including them having an ED is supposed to do what exactly? Also, who are you to tell someone how they should live their life? Little girls being influenced by these “bimbos” is something parents should be worried about, not you or Miss P!nk. If I were born a woman, I would be acting like Paris Hilton so I could get that bag. Fuck being a President for a shitty country that can’t even let women have rights to their own body. 🤣
I love this song and the music video, since I was a Teenager. It helped me to understand that it's great to be what you are and not to clone yourself to be something, or someone that you don't want to be. That's why I love Pink ❤
To understand the message of this song you need to know about what was happening at that moment, beauty was about being extremely skinny, eating disorders were just a way "to lose weight", etc., this song was so powerful back then because girls used to think they weren't beautiful if they weren't extremely skinny, so they would just do things to get famous, it didn't matter if they needed to have eating disorders or to do "stupid things" just to be famous. That's what the song is about, so please stop saying this song is judging women because it's not.
The message is important but it's still shaming women imo. It was the trend back then, so I'm not judging, but she really dissed all those girls, calling them stupid, making fun of what they were doing. If back then, it was not offensive because young girls surely needed models that were not Paris, Lindsey or Britney, now, knowing what some of them have been through, it's fair to say that the song was insensitive. It's like when we watch old clips from American TV shows, making fun of them. The whole industry was really messed up, the gossip magazines, the paps... everyone was part of the problem. So it's good, imo, to come back to this music video to see how everything has changed and to accept that this song, today, was part of the problem too.
Why wouldn't you judge women if they do stupid things for attention? I find it reasonable to be told when i'm doing something stupid. Political correctness isn't helping anyone. It just enables insecurity and insecurity leads to being hurt( by yourself or men).
I’m listening to this at 36, and realizing how much it helped me stay real and independent in my younger years. Thank you PINK! We need to bring this song back. Girls younger and younger are wearing makeup and getting Botox because it’s marketed toward them.
the song/video was about Jessica simpson, Nicole richie, Paris Hilton, & Lindsay lohan. If you weren't paying attention to pop culture back then many things in the video probably went over your head. At the time Lindsay lohan was running people over constantly, Nicole richie had lost a shit ton of weight and was crazy skinny, Jessica simpson did the these boots are made for walking video and she wears a bikini and washes a car in a sexual manner, and paris Hilton was famous for her sex tape blowing up, pink references all these things here. It had nothing to do with the kardashians or instagram models or influencer culture. They weren't a thing in 2006
100% still relevant today. I remember having my tween daughter's watch this video years ago while encouraging them to be themselves and NEVER dumb it down to impress ANYONE.
like others have stated, this was pre-body positivity, no fat shaming, etc. time. those in the comments bashing probably aren't old enough to remember or weren't even born during this period in time. while watching the video i can literally see the references she is making (jessica in the daisy duke's washing the car, paris in her "home" video, etc).
I think this video is still viable today because people are so sensitive. I’ve also seen people in the comments changing the meaning because they think that the point of view on society now is the same as then, and it wasn’t. Times have changed and the meaning of some words and actions have changed but at the time this was meant to be a slap in the face to the stupid girls. Most people need to remember the context of when this was posted. The only women who were famous at the time were indeed these ‘stupid girls’ so she’s just trying to prove that you don’t need to dumb yourself down to do well and be a good person.
I'm sorry your favorite song has aged like milk. Sincerely, an oversensitive snowflake who was 13 when this was popular and thought it was the pinnacle of social commentary.
I think the issue is that from that perspectiv it was of course "revolutionary" at the time. But it didn't age well because there was a bigger reason why this was even a thing. Most women who became stars only were able to do so by sedually objectifying themselves (P!nk included!!!) and while that is what people wanted to see, there was the double standard that women were shamed for using their sexuality so they were already perceived as dumb to begin with. Since they were not for real dumb they at least played their cards as there was no winning anyway and ended up giving the people what they wanted and monetized that. And of course adding Paris' sextape is now again super screwed up cause we all know she was a victim of something horrific while it was yet not even illegal to do publicize revenge porn back in the day (see documentary of Hunter Moore) and the women again were ridiculed and portrayed as used up and nasty and STUPID for daring to ever videotape or take pictures of themselves like that. So from todays pov it's just showing how misogynistic the world has been. She was pointing out the problem but it comes off as putting the blame on them and shaming them, when for real they just went a different route than her to deal with the worlds misogyny. This was during a time when it was completelx acceptable to touch a female stars boobs in an interview asking if they were real, calling people scellettons or fat and asking underage stars wether they were still virgins when they should be interviewed about their careers. I really am still shocked to think about how screwed up it was to grow up with the media of that time as a women
This video and song had a huge effect on me as a young pre-teen owning this album back then. It's one of those influences that helped me become the me I am now. Don't try to be who you are not. No need to change yourself and who you are to get approval from others. Thank you, Pink.
Reminds me of this quote: "Unfollow IG models and influencers. Start following artists and designers. Your entire outlook on life will change. You will be reminded less of your insecurities. You will be reminded more of what you love about what humans are capable of creating."
Truth. I follow doctors, nurses, moms, other inspirational people. Being a Millennial, I've seen the rise & fall of celebrities & influencers. It's so important to be level headed & not fall in the trap of false realities. Social media allows you to control what people see.
I agree but Maybe not have social media at all and know your worth what your capable of period is a way to go all I got is TH-cam and Pinterest haven’t had Facebook in over a year, instagram, stop using Snapchat 3 months ago you actually see life without these social media stuff.
i think pink is an excelent role model but if a girl is a "stupid girl" then isn't she allowed to live it that way?. although you could also say tha women are conditioned to be "stupid girls". not on purpose but you don't have to look hard to find the differences in the toys directed at boys and girls of a young age and maybe we should make an effort to incourage children to be who they feel they are regardless of the media.
Wow…. i really needed to watch this video and listen to this song again. It rings true now more than ever. The length us women go through and the way we need to act to “keep men” is so unreal sometimes, I’m so happy this song reminds us to keep it real and to never act “stupid” just to please a guy. Cheers to all the strong ladies out there keeping it reel 🍻
This song was so empowering as a young girl. The world wouldn’t be the same without Pink. She changed the game and brought women to where they are today.
@ramcurequeeny I didn’t make it seem like there are only hyper feminine girls and the truth is most girls are well in between hyper feminine and tomboyish. I mean that there are girl who are shamed by society for liking girly things and this song isn’t helping.
@@totalweirdo6 Omg who the hell cares. You people need to shut the hell up about how offended you are by everything. No one gives a shit how the song made you feel. Go listen to something else. There's plenty of songs out there for super feminine girly girls. At this point you're all complaining just for the sake of complaining. This song is 15 years old. Talking about "there are girls shamed by society because of things like this" 🙄🤦♀️ you're ridiculous.
@ramcurequeeny tomboy here. Sure, people have been rude to me. But that doesn’t make it okay to hate on a girl for being very feminine. That isn’t okay either
I grew up listening to Pink and she’s still killing it. I bet she’s a Kickass mom. An still one of my favorite artists from the 00’s. A plus. You go Girl.
I totally agree Pink is great and this song sends a message for young girls out there and they don't have be like Paris Hilton and Be Smart Strong and Successful and I know that Pink was angry at Miley Cryus and so was Cher b/c of her Twerking on the MTV awards when she was dancing around Robin Thicke.
Sad thing is is that today compared to some instagram models paris is considered a prude. Think about that for a second. We have gone lower than Paris hilton, the blondest blonde of all time.
@@sominboy2757 it's funny because yall are all saying be yourself and be nice and all this fake bullshit that you dont really believe in cause all of yall are judging, criticizing, and talking about the "Instagram models". Does whatever they do make them bad people? Does it make them any less human? What does anyone in this comment section get from this? Will it change the people you're talking about? And what's wrong with paris Hilton? Is it because she's rich and she knows it? Shes pretty and expresses it? She likes to dress up? Who is she hurting? Is it wrong? And all the other women or men you all are judging what about them?
Problem with today is that so many people are triggered by the important messages because they don't want to admit that it's true. This message is so good and we need more. I have always loved how P!nk stood up to the haters and told the truth. If you wanna be a girly girl, she's not saying to not do that, it's when you start doing different things to be pretty and to attract guys' attention. Just be yourself, strong and independent. Don't dress, act or look a certain way for other people
I always loved her too for that! And I know this song isn't about making fun of people who need help woth eating disorders, it was to show the fault in their disorder and stating the truth! Couldn't agree with you more!
YAS same girl✊🏼🙌🏻,ima tomboy mostly but there isn’t anything wrong with being girly.she is just trying to say to like you said not to make stupid decisions just to impress others or make others jealous.
It's nice to come back after all these years and listen to this song again. Back when I was a kid, I loved the song because it sounded nice and the music video was funny, but being non-English speaker, I didn't understand a single word. Now I get to enjoy not only the music, but the meaning of the lyrics too 😊
Pink really made a great statement with this song. How many of us women have grown up feeling at one time or another the whole " I'd rather be thought of as pretty than smart" nonsense??? It actually takes some courage to just be yourself and be comfortable with who you are sometimes rather than spending hours trying on the latest fashions and more hours in front of the mirror messing around with hairstyles and makeup. It's okay to want to look good, but I always love it when someone says I look great when I'm not "all dolled up" as they saying goes.
hopefully red I realised that when I turned 15 :) and choose to become a doctor and not take the path of ' pretty girls are dumb ' someone gotta fix this messed up stereotype girl!
hopefully red No I don't think so, I kinda disagree with the song in certain parts. Just cuz a girl wears makeup and heels and shows skin doesn't mean she's doing it for a man. Maybe she feels confident like that, and it's hard to go out and dress all "girly girl" when society thinks it makes you a "stupid girl". But other than that I think this is a very good song.
You can be yourself. Sure. That doesn't mean ppl aren't gonna stop testing you tho. And for their entertainment... You gotta switch it up. I don't mean entertainment as some simple sh to view either....
y’all are completing missing the meaning of the song. she’s saying you don’t have to dumb yourself down to get people to love you. it’s not being misogynistic.
The same girls who used to bully girls like pink are now using words like misogyny to put the same girls down as adults. They didn't grow up they used different language to to do the same as they did in high school. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Before some closed-minded feminist makes another comment, the video is not about being FEMININE or GIRLY, it is about females altering their body image to look pleasing in societies eyes, being thin, sexy, overly-provocative is something society promotes, P!nk is talking about the girls that are following that trend, and not being themselves.
Totally agree! P!nk sings about the fact that girls follow the norms and values of our society. Images they have to conform to in order to get respect and attention, for example being tan, thin,... The title of the song may not be the best decision though, because you can not only blame the girls but also society who creates these stupid norms (for example the fashion industry who promotes slenderness). People judge other people constantly and for that reasons girls follow these norms and by consequence want to be tan and thin. So maybe stupid society would have been a better choice as song title ;).
People fail to realize that this song doesn't mock pretty and/or blond women who like doing their make up and dressing up. This song mocks egoistic and shallow women who equate ditziness w/ sexiness and have no goals in life.
Zeynep Kıymet yeah, we get that, but it all gets negated when she trivialises bulimia and the end clip insinuates that choosing a football over a doll is 'smarter'. I love Pink, but this video could have been SO much better in execution
I actually thought that she criticizes the media (and society) with this song. How women are portrayed in tv and that many women feel obligated to act like that because otherwise they’re not girly enough, not sexy enough, not desirable enough, not enough. At the end the girl knows she supposed to play with the dolls (because society) but she has enough self-confidence to pick the football. I don’t think they wanted to insinuate that playing with dolls is bad but I agree they could’ve handled it a bit different, e.g. the girl taking both toys.
I heard some people complain about this song/vid. But as a woman in my late 20s I want to say that this song reallly helped me in my teens. In the 2000s it wasn't as accepted to be an outsider as a girl. you could listen to p!nk and avril lavigne and dress up in punk, but you had to deal with beeing an outcast, and boy, you really had to be skiny ... so happy that that`s over. And I love this song.
I made a comment here 2 yrs ago. & I didn't even want to read it. The only excuse I wanna pull out my ass is that I just hope I was tired. Whoever made up feminism needs to just no. Feminism is just being a female. Really, that's gotta be the literal definition. No, I didn't Google it. Now, it just seems like a way to divide genders & even put females against females. All I know is I don't have the muscles or testoron guys have. & I don't go out of my way to bash other females. Oh yeah, I feel like this video is just hipercritical. Even tho the intent was to empower females... You can't really do it by bashing the other ones. Also, she's done a lot of the same things other females have done. It really just looks like she's doing a parody of herself, ironically. What ever happened to girl president? ...She's dancing in the video next to 50 ¢... 🙋 Me but not really. But sort of

“Maybe if I act like that, this guy would call me back” this has never shocked me to the core more then now because it’s so true sometimes especially when I was growing up. Pink has always been so good
I've always been a super smart person, but when I was a teenager I would act like a dumb blonde in front of guys so they wouldn't feel intimidated by me and it's sad to say I was very well liked by the teenage boys at the time. It worked. I'm glad I've grown up and realized it's much better to be your true authentic self than to do something to make yourself more attractive to people - and shockingly enough, guys still like me now.
@@barblenatortwt4971 rightfully so? I'm pretty far left and now these days SJWs and fake woke people will bash anything they want because they feel like it.
Yeah, she probably would be. I used to love this song but it just comes across as mean-spirited now that I've grown up and know better. This song doesn't even describe girls being dumb, it just describes girls wanting to look sexy, and there's nothing wrong with girls like that. They certainly aren't inherently dumb.
@@aarishowton8037 Theres a difference between people who want actual social justice and social progress and there's those who will get butthurt because they have too much time on their hands and a stick up their butt. @Kathy Schiebel I saaaiiidd shut up fool. " )) I love it on here because you ALL have NO IDEA how life truly works. Girls, jobs, money, family...its funny how religions, education system, medical industry, governments, social medias etc....have all dumb everybody down to their insecurity levels. Its nothing to do with being nice respectful wealthy looks or any of that bullshit. You can walk in a room say nothing and attract everyone in there. ITS CALLED VIBRATION AND ENERGY OF LOVE> Check that everyday and you attract all good things....hhmmm yes including girls/women. But if youre an ashole, you attract the asholes of the world hmm yes, including girls. Your world mirrors back to you what you are projecting out with your energy and vibration. So just enjoy and have fun, dont take shit too seriously or you'll get cancer, or hmmm yes girls too.
@Kathy Schiebel Oh and btw.....winning the approval of any girl/woman is like locking yourself in an underwater prison full of hungry angry sharks and swallowing the key. Men have figured out that you must find love for self first, THEN you will know you dont need a girl or woman after all. So get over yourself and do it NOW!!!
The fact that one of the reasons that made P!nk wrote that song was because people said she was "too masculine" because of her looks and personality and that she should fit in with the standards of other girls in the industry... Literally is criticizing the pressures and beauty standards that girls had in the 2000s
To the people bashing the video: This song is a product of its time, when the ONLY narrative of being ‘perfect’ was being white, blonde, tall, thin and popular and it was everywhere, inescapable, and girls who didn’t meet the requirements, were bashed and treated like shit and that was fucked. Many of the girls in that generation were thankful to have someone like Pink to point that out. It helped them survive teenage years without feeling completely alienated among the Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie media frenzy, Britney Spears at her peak and her lookalikes, etc.. But then again, of course this video looks somehow problematic these days with the notion of sorority between women not trying to compete with each other (I still see hegemonic beauty everywhere, but I guess all changes take their time and people resist them..), but that was certainly NOT the case back then. People were just shittier. There was no concept of body positivity. You would be bullied or laughed at. People easily forget how shitty were things before.
Truth! I like to think that Pink was one of the people who inspired her generation to change the world. Here's to each generation building up on the successes of the previous. Excelsior!
Thank you for kindly pointing out the context for when this was written and made. P!nk is a social commentator with her songs and is far from afraid to speak her mind.
Well now we’re saying obesity is beautiful 😂 and then they contradict themselves with getting a ton of plastic surgery. It started well at first with a simple concept we don’t all have to look alike and now it has turned into this insanity
Gen Z doesn’t realize the stupid girl Pink described was actually the ‘pick me girl’ they keep talking about. Also Pink was making a lot of fun of herself, because her label wanted her to be someone she didn’t want to be. It’s also a way to cope with pressure and have a campy creative way to deal with expectations.
Watch it in the right context, in the right time. The message was empowering for me as a young kid. And still we have to criticize the media, brands and industry for how they want to portray women and people in general. It’s satire, not perfect okay (maybe she shouldn’t have picked individuals, keep it general instead of talking about other artists who deal with the same pressure), but it was a bold statement against pick me girls and the male gaze.
Do they not matter as well? Just because they choose to be the way they choose doesn’t mean one should have the freedom to shame them. I hope you get what I mean. A ‘feminist’ shouldn’t shame other girls. Live and let live.
@@jeremifrancisco1 if the reason they're acting like that is because they're authentically just so, then that's fine...but if they're doing it because it's what will get them fame? That's a poser. That's a Pick Me. Paris Hilton was seen as a sex symbol. That was all she ever was to the people who fapped to her. She's so much more than her image.
It's not about stupid girls - it's about stupid stereotypes and demands girls wanted to live up to because media told us how to be in order to be loved and accepted
The media didnt told weman how to look... People are sexually attacted by what they are, not by what the media says its best. Proof of this is the people who, lets say, like fat chicks. Fat isnt portrayed as the media as perfect, yet those people exist. Being attracted to other human being is a lot less shallow and you think it to be...
Eat This So you are saying girls behave in a way they think men are attracted to? I'm a woman and I know how much media influenced my self image. Don't tell me I'm wrong, when you haven't walked my shoes.
I never said that. TL;DR, only 3-5% of what we are sexually attracted to is media influented. I dont care how you dress, or how you make up, or why you make up. Im saying the media little to none influences what people are sexually attracted to.
"I didn't write the song to win a popularity contest, I wrote it because I felt it was a discussionthat needed to be had. There are people that are relieved that someone finally said it, there's people that think it's just hilarious (the video), there's people that think im a hypocrite but my point is not that sexy is a bad thing. My point is that sexy and smart are not oil and water and that you don't have to dumb yourself don't have to dumb yourself down to be cute." - P!nk She has stated that 'stupid girls' is not about her peers being girly, sexy, stupid etc. It's about being stupid to gain media attention and how you don't have to separate being smart and sexy because it's ok to be both at once. Her and Paris Hilton actually spoke about the song at a nightclub where Paris told P!nk "I'm not actually stupid, I just act that way on TV" and P!nk responded "that's kind of my point". I will say this one more time. The song isn't about *being* stupid, it's about *acting* stupid.
But being sexy and dumb attracted a lot ppaparazi's back then. That's what she doesn't get. American society wants to see celebritiy trainwrecks on their magazine. They don't want wholesome content, this is why a lot of them celebrities try hard to be edgy and abuse drugs. Hollywood is Hollyweird, remember that.
@@somabalestra1131 I think if that's the kind of stuff that made girls attractive back then she did get it. This song was a statement against having to be a certain way to be accepted and pedastalised in the form of an edgy parody
@@natarixo9965 But she directed her criticism towards certain female celebrities who were bullied by the media everywhere at that time, especially Lindsy Lohan cause she is kind of irrelavent now. All these female celelbrities that she spoofed (Paris, Lindsy, Jessica) were the product of the pressure female celebrities had to endure in order to "make it", even talented actresses can't get away with it. You can't blame them for trying so hard to succeed, the media was really brutal to female celelbrities in the early 00s, it's similar to the toxicity of the Kpop industry today where idols have to fit the strict Korean beauty standards to get popular to the point that some companies forces their idols to undergo plastic surgery. I wish she made fun of the producers, film directers, the toxic paparazi's invading their privacy and the over dramatic tabloids that made false rumers instead of making fun of these vulnerable girls. She made fun of Paris Hilton's revenge porn tape when she was only 19 and naive, that's fvcked up. I was kind of disppointed in Pink for that, she is definitely not a pickme as the comments suugest but she lacked empathy. I think she matured and regrets making that MV. In my opinion, Taylor Swift-The Man did a better job capturing the feeling female celebrities go thrugh but the roles were flipped to male celelbrities in the MV. Very brilliant! Too bad it got a lot of hate. Sorry for the long pose. Peace!
@@nicolerimmer don't feel weird for that! That was so kind of you, and the world needs more of what you did: loving others simply because we're all just humans attempting to better ourselves and this world. You are loved back!! ❤
I hate how people are looking at this video and seeing it as her attacking "sluts" or "beauty". It isn't that at all. She's showing how we've got our priorities all fucked up by focusing on what society deems outer beauty. It's how we're dumbing ourselves to be loved and for attention. How we no longer value independence, difference and intelligence. She isn't mocking women who dress provocative, she's pointing out that the media makes us believe that's what we NEED to do and it's pretty stupid of us to follow.
Yes, we do not NEED cosmetics to look PERFECT, because no one is. Everyone is unique, and the media needs to respect that, instead of writing stupid articles on a mag about the THIGH-GAP! What the F**k!
Old-person-opinion here: I was 12 when this song was released. Back then if you were "not like other girls" you were bullied mercilessly. By your peers and by your parents. When I first listened to this I felt seen and heard and somehow validated in not being like the others. I was outcasted for not being a girly-girl. Nowadays counter culture is embraced, as it should be, but in the early 2000s it was shunned. The people that didn't live through this won't understand how hard it was back then to be different.
@@coolbae1998 yep. that was a time where girls were supposed to be pretty. Nothing else. Only pretty. Basically being objects for men. Hence, the whole music industry showed it quite clear. Girls dancing in tiny bikinis in males music videos. And the camera always zoomed on their private parts. And females did the same for themselves. Singing about their bodies or sex showing that females are shallow. Using erotic costumes to get attention, being in unhealthy weight. The list goes on and on. (Basically being boobs on a stick with no personality). Add on, Paris and Nicole had a reality show together and both of them acted dumb. Intentionally. And that was considered attractive back then. This is where Pink is the winner. I always thought she is one of the best in the industry. But it's my opinion. I just instantly dislike people who use their bodies to gain attention. Especially in the music industry.
The thing is girls should not hang on to that thought anymore either because the "not like other girls" is actually an illusion. When I used to think like that I thought the other girls were basic and not smart but life taught and proved me how wrong I was which is a good thing because those girls can get far more than you in life or it could happen the other way around as well. Both of these things are totally alright. I am glad the not like other girls phanemenon is now getting some critics.. however I wished people also stopped making fun of girls that think they are not like other girls and instead show them the healthier way of coping with life rather than mocking them Nevertheless, the song is catchy af :)
In a world that just continues to thrive on vanity this is still so iconic. I feel like so many in the comments section have no idea what the message is. It’s not attacking people for being dumb or girly. It’s attacking vanity and judgement and fake people and beauty standards
My cousin was a model when she was 18. She was on the cover of Vogue. Did fashion week. Did it all. Never had plastic surgery never colored her hair. She’s just naturally stunning. She quit modeling because she said she would never change who she is for anyone. She went to law school and now she’s dumb rich and super super super smart and successful.
This hasn't aged particularly well (most things won't because we grow and evolve as a society) but the message was important and relevant and bold at the time. P!nk gave girls permission to be different and silly and not hung up on men and their validation. Queen.
Im 12, and these girls at my school started bullying me, because im a tomboy. They called me a lesbian and stuff, so i ignored them and i played them this song today😂
@@anja6983 you would be surprised at how many guys are intimidated by smart women...it challenges them intellectually when they just wanna chill and have a good, light fun time. It's very nice to have meaningful conversations, future planning and all sometimes but not always. If a girl is REALLY smart, she will know when to use her IQ when it matters and pretend to be just basic at the right times. ☺
Pink was always so spot-on about everything. If you're triggered by her social commentary in this video, you've never acknowledged toxic femininity. Pink can be a feminist and still make valid criticisms.
***** I really don't know if that's true. Pink managed to make it clear in the lyrics that she was mocking these stereotypes whereas Britney and Iggy seem to be mocking them in the music video but then also seriously/honestly embracing them in the lyrics. idk
V E Gray Haha I know, went straight to this video afterwards! I know they were joking, but it was just too much. Also, their lyrics still send the message that you can achieve anything as long as you're pretty, which is just sad and not true.
This song made more for my mental health than my own mother (who presured me into an ED and made my worth as a human depend on being attractive to men). Growing up in the late 90s , early 00s was insane
not all bulimics throw up. some abuse laxatives or overexercise. eds are complicated. the point od bulimia is you are overconcerned with your bodyshape, binge eat and use unhealthy ways to compensate for binge eating.
Its been an issue for millennia really... the more things change the more they stay the same, thing is the last few decades this sort of stupidity has become rather extreme and basically something to celebrate or as a means to fame/identity. Thankfully the repercussions for a woman going along a different mindset arent as severe as they used to be and guys are kinda becoming averse to it as something admirable in a partner. And just to iterate im saying this as a guy.
Yep, the fact that women now believe that being feminine is empowering really shows how bad we need songs like these. Imgine believing that pink is being misogynistic instead of seeing a critique of societal expectations for women. 🙄
2022 and this song is still super important. Get plastic surgery if YOU want it but don't do it for society or dumb yourself down for the affections of someone else.
Except being feminine is patriarchal. Heels damage your feet and legs, make up is time consuming (you could be spending that time studying or building hobbies) and it also damages your skin. Hair products, tanning products, harmful diets, shaving. All harmful and women don’t make those choices in a vacuum. They make those choices because it benefits them in a patriarchal society. They don’t get shit on, they get the approval from males. A life without the constraints of forced femininity is the ideal world for women and girls to be in.
This song is so relevant people want to take offense but it is what it is. There are so many women obsessed with perfection that they are changing themselves drastically for the opinion of others
I remember an interview with her about it and she said she wasn’t calling any of the people actually stupid but that the were acting stupid in order to please men.
Now we call them pick me girls
Earla Weese There’s absolutely zero correlation. Nice try though.
And the lack of positive female role models if I recall correctly
Did GLEE sing this?
Girls that are like that so desperate for attention it makes me sick

The song holds the message of girls being valuable individuals as they are without changing themselves under the pressure of mainstream standards, which can make you stray away from what you originally want and damage you, it was really empowering and confidence boosting to listen to it as a little girl, still does
No, it Is about stupid girls ❤

What stuck with me most about this is she says "I'm so glad that I'll never fit in that will never be me, outcasts and girls with ambition that's what I want to see" has always been the best line of this song
oh yes ambition is such a great idea..we can see that in men...
KN JB what

KN JB What? Are you implying that women aren't ambitious?
I love that line, its so me lol. Ive always loved pink shes so awesome!!
It doesn't.
Acting like that means acting like 2000s era Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson (watch these boots Jessica Simpson film clip for reference).
Exactly
An Aussie yes ma’am lol
What’s so bad about being fake to get attention? Pink is just shaming other women.
It's okay to be girly, I think this video is just a reminder to make sure you're doing it for the right reasons. Don't throw away your personality/ambition, especially to become some guy's object.
Yeah, too bad the videoclip sends a very different message :/
But girliness has nothing to do with acting stupid like these girls do....
I kinda think my personality is changing to become one of them, im a people pleaser
she had a good idea, but the video is a mess
From internalized misogyny, to jokes about eating disorders, to stereotyping women, this video appeals more to the patriarchy than it does feminism.

Pink called it out back then when it was just starting to take over. That’s been the culture since.
Yeah she talks about how Paris confronted her about the song, and Paris said "I'm not really stupid, I just act stupid". And Pink was like that's the point of the song.

I mean it's always a right time to be a misogynistic woman in a misogynistic culture.
I definitely agree that this has beeeeeeeennnnnnnnn relevant, though it wasn't ahead of it's time... It's just still happening unfortunately. Maybe even worse now! Cause now we know it's not just girls😅

@@parthianarrow5874There's nothing misogynistic about expecting women to be more than just bimbos. In fact it's quite the damn opposite.

Paris Hilton
2024 Anyone
So including them having an ED is supposed to do what exactly? Also, who are you to tell someone how they should live their life? Little girls being influenced by these “bimbos” is something parents should be worried about, not you or Miss P!nk.

2024 Has Anybody
To understand the message of this song you need to know about what was happening at that moment, beauty was about being extremely skinny, eating disorders were just a way "to lose weight", etc., this song was so powerful back then because girls used to think they weren't beautiful if they weren't extremely skinny, so they would just do things to get famous, it didn't matter if they needed to have eating disorders or to do "stupid things" just to be famous. That's what the song is about, so please stop saying this song is judging women because it's not.
Same as today... girls looking for men and media attention...
I love that you felt the need to explain a 15 year old song with 96 million views before you...
Why wouldn't you judge women if they do stupid things for attention? I find it reasonable to be told when i'm doing something stupid. Political correctness isn't helping anyone. It just enables insecurity and insecurity leads to being hurt( by yourself or men).

the song/video was about Jessica simpson, Nicole richie, Paris Hilton, & Lindsay lohan. They weren't a thing in 2006
You’re correct they weren’t but the message is still relevant to today’s society
Hell, I remember all that and I agree it's still relevant to today, HOWEVER, I think it's much, much worse these days than what it was back then.

like others have stated, this was pre-body positivity, no fat shaming, etc. time. those in the comments bashing probably aren't old enough to remember or weren't even born during this period in time. while watching the video i can literally see the references she is making (jessica in the daisy duke's washing the car, paris in her "home" video, etc).
I really am still shocked to think about how screwed up it was to grow up with the media of that time as a women
people should be shamed for being over weight.

The same girls who used to bully girls like pink are now using words like misogyny to put the same girls down as adults. They didn't grow up they used different language to to do the same as they did in high school. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
We really did condemn femininity as stupid or bad back then, huh?
Before some closed-minded feminist makes another comment, the video is not about being FEMININE or GIRLY, it is about females altering their body image to look pleasing in societies eyes, being thin, sexy, overly-provocative is something society promotes, P!nk is talking about the girls that are following that trend, and not being themselves.
Freckled Jegus But Pink is specifically referring to the girls who change just to impress others.
Freckled Jegus I said close-minded feminist. not feminists in general.
Exactly
Totally agree! P!nk sings about the fact that girls follow the norms and values of our society. Images they have to conform to in order to get respect and attention, for example being tan, thin,... The title of the song may not be the best decision though, because you can not only blame the girls but also society who creates these stupid norms (for example the fashion industry who promotes slenderness). People judge other people constantly and for that reasons girls follow these norms and by consequence want to be tan and thin. So maybe stupid society would have been a better choice as song title ;).
+King Avalon I agree whole heartedly with everything you just said! well put
People fail to realize that this song doesn't mock pretty and/or blond women who like doing their make up and dressing up. This song mocks egoistic and shallow women who equate ditziness w/ sexiness and have no goals in life.
Shallowness and prettiness go along pretty well.
+ bulimic people 🤗
So true
Such a powerful message, bravo pink!

Young girls and women need to hear this song more than ever now
@@cutiemango Nope. Because a woman who wants to become the president doesnt do it for the likings of the man.
The fact that one of the reasons that made P!nk wrote that song was because people said she was "too masculine" because of her looks and personality and that she should fit in with the standards of other girls in the industry... Literally is criticizing the pressures and beauty standards that girls had in the 2000s
De hecho siguen teniendo.
To the people bashing the video:
This song is a product of its time, when the ONLY narrative of being ‘perfect’ was being white, blonde, tall, thin and popular and it was everywhere, inescapable, and girls who didn’t meet the requirements, were bashed and treated like shit and that was fucked.
Agree. The early 00s where horrible times to be a girl.
THIS
Well now we’re saying obesity is beautiful 😂 and then they contradict themselves with getting a ton of plastic surgery.
There is no Gen Z.
It's not about stupid girls -
it's about stupid stereotypes and demands girls wanted to live up to because media told us how to be in order to be loved and accepted
Eat This
So you are saying girls behave in a way they think men are attracted to?
I'm a woman and I know how much media influenced my self image. Don't tell me I'm wrong, when you haven't walked my shoes.
I never said that. TL;DR, only 3-5% of what we are sexually attracted to is media influented. I dont care how you dress, or how you make up, or why you make up. Im saying the media little to none influences what people are sexually attracted to.
No actually it’s about dumb girls lmfao
I think it's about both, these girls act like that because they are influenced by stereotypes.
My point is that sexy and smart are not oil and water and that you don't have to dumb yourself don't have to dumb yourself down to be cute." - P!nk
She has stated that 'stupid girls' is not about her peers being girly, sexy, stupid etc.

@@coolbae1998 Lol yup. I remember in 2005 being made fun of by other girls for reading books. 😂
Both of these things are totally alright. love how pink pokes fun of everyday life in this video !
its 2018 and its sad that this song is still very true.
I know right? This song is old, early 2000s, but it's still accurate nowadays 😕
and it's only getting worse
After 10 years, I finally get the meaning of this
She's was too way foward making this song.we're living it,thank you Pink.
2022 and this song is still super important. Get plastic surgery if YOU want it but don't do it for society or dumb yourself down for the affections of someone else.
THIS
2024 Anyone
Such a well written song! This video stands the test of time and is a great message for everyone!
A good role model for the little girl to have the best of both worlds: Elle Woods
Elle is the best: She's smart and compassionate while knowing her worth and being unapologetically feminine
YESSSSSS. Also she doesn’t need to act smart because she is smart she can act however she wants.
@@tiathetire7038 bruh
Yes exactly
Except being feminine is patriarchal. Heels damage your feet and legs, make up is time consuming (you could be spending that time studying or building hobbies) and it also damages your skin. Hair products, tanning products, harmful diets, shaving. All harmful and women don’t make those choices in a vacuum. They make those choices because it benefits them in a patriarchal society. They don’t get shit on, they get the approval from males.
A life without the constraints of forced femininity is the ideal world for women and girls to be in.
Pensar que hoy en dia no se podria hacer una canción asi u ofenderias a muchos...mi favorita por mucho ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This song is so relevant people want to take offense but it is what it is. There are so many women obsessed with perfection that they are changing themselves drastically for the opinion of others
The older I get the more I can relate to this, that sucks. God fucking dammit.
I feel you girl
