A few others who I consider as the same type of character(silent, loyal, a wee dark physically, extremely efficient, always on business, melee, ninja like, all that) would be Snake Eyes(G.I.Joe), Rinzler(TRON: Legacy), Mr. E(Lego Ninjago), and Marrok(Star Wars). Just to name the ones that come to mind immediately at least. Love these types of characters, and Soundwave(especially TFP Soundwave) is definitely one of them.

I always felt Starscream just self appoints himself the second in command, but if Megatron had to choose a successor, it would obviously be Soundwave. Mostly for his intelligence and loyalty to him. I never knew he could be so powerful, yet it makes sense.

We've all been waiting for Soundwave to run Starscream's fade and he did not disappoint. Soundwave was born on the streets with Megatron, he knows how to throw hands.
It happened in the G1 comics, albeit temporarily. And it sort of happened in Cyberverse too, though that instance was more so Soundwave being the main representative for the Decepticons since by that time, Megatron, Shockwave, and Starscream had been killed off.
Starscream will always be one of the best Transformers character and I love his scheming ambition and how cruel yet pathetic he can be but we still love him.

I can't remember which of the cartoons it was. But i loved it when Starscream temporarily joined the Autobots due to the budding friendship he was getting from one of the kids. And even after he did betray them he still kept the pendant that they made him all the way to his "redemption" moment sacrificing himself to try and save everyone from Unicron. That, was my favorite version of Starscream.
G1 Spike levered Primes laser rifle on is shoulder and started shooting at the Deception's starship. He also swam to the bottom of Sherman Dam(a Hover Dam expy) to save Hound.
In all fairness, it makes total sense for Soundwave to just get it over with. Unlike Megatron ,who humors him, he wasn't even remotely interested in giving Starscream more of his time than he deserved.

Starscream is almost always portrayed in a downright comical mix of inept and ambitious. Which makes rare times when they show him doing something smart, honorable and self sacrificial not only a nice change of pace, but more epic as well. Sometimes it's just a single moment in a series of him being selfish, and sometimes it is an entire character arc. However, when it is done well it really hits hard.

I find it hard to believe that bumblebee died after getting shot in the face like that because in IDW Transformers More Than Meets The Eye comic issue #6 Rung survived getting his head blown off after Swerve missed Fortress Maximus and accidentally shot Rung instead. Also I recommend reading Transformers MTMTE comics.

I think they are trying to be more creative with bumblebee and give more spotlight to other characters which is why in Skybound it is Cliffjumper who is the kid friendly autobot who connects with the human cast.
