    Well, I thought I wasn't subscribed but I was, but the bell wasn't rung, but now it is! I got a story for you. I got caught up in one of those DOT checks in Fort Worth,Texas one year at the NASCAR track. Going through the motions, 5-6 officers from all counties in Texas it seems is there. Officer that was assigned to my rig gets the creeper out to go under the trailer to check brakes, right. He comes out after 3-5 minutes after going under. Comes up to me and says you disc brakes on the trailer and I can't really perform a brake test, I say I believe that is correct officer. I laugh, he tells a few other officers and they all laugh about it to. If that's right, no S cam to watch as you apply the brake pedal? And if that ain't right, then I guess I don't know what I'm talking about!

  • @Bo24Yfz
    @Bo24Yfz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Brian, a little advise about the police/ Inspectors from a former police officer that had done what you described . When I gave warnings it was always verbal I did not give written warnings for the reason you explained. Even before I was thinking about trucking I knew when a trucker got a ticket it wasn’t like a normal person so I tried not to give tickets to truckers ever if I could help it and it’s honestly common among law enforcement . Believe it or not we do respect you guys for what you do! Now speaking for myself every time I stopped someone the first 1 minute of the conversation was going to tell me if they get a warning or a ticket. And most cops are this way not all but most... what I look for is respect first and foremost and just like you we are just doing our job. And the second thing is accountability . You completely played it right you was respectful and you owned up to what you did and explained your reason. 90% of cops would let you walk on that for how you handled it. So good job on that. Just remember most cops are not assholes they do not like to write tickets mostly and a persons attitude will go along way in how it turns out. For the cops that don’t know you still get penalized for written warnings just explain to them that you understand they are trying to help you and you appreciate it the help and tell them that only verbal warnings don’t show up but anything written will and most of your nice to them will help you out especially if they are just giving a warning to you. It’s easier for them and if you make it make sense they will usually say ok!
    Now as for the inspection it sounds like you ran across a area that was having an enforcement day or shift and they are required to have so many inspections during that time for the department to get the grant money from the state. They don’t have to write tickets but they do have to make stops .. again being nice and respectful to the officer will go along way especially now with how people are . Especially if you say I know your doing your job but I appreciate what your doing keeping everyone safe. Cops eat that shit up again most people are assholes to us... so it’s nice to have someone that is nice even if they did somthing wrong. And your right about finding something wrong with a new truck it’s very easy to find violations if we want to the key is to make us not want to. At the end of the day we are all people we all have life’s and families to go home to just be nice and respectful and most of the time u will come out better then being rude. And I will tell you this regardless never be rude even if they are you will never win on the side of the road if you think you are wronged be polite and take the ticket to court if your not you can turn a warning or small ticket into somthing more and trust me if your a ass they will remember you and actually show up to court . Now if your not and you are nice or they don’t remember you most will blow it off and if you do fight it you will win. I hope this advise and insight helps in the future ! Be safe out there and keep the videos coming !

    I was pulled over with my new tractor with my brand new 2019 walbash trailer never had a load on it. DOT in indiana wrote me a warning for brakes out of adjustment. But get this SHE NEVER went under the damn trailer then proceeded to tell me I'm getting a warning ticket for this. I made her mad when I said "what class do you have to take to be able to hear brakes out of adjustment?" She said she would impound my entire unit and take me to jail...I said for what exactly? Her reply disorderly conduct. I laugh and said write the ticket for court no warning I won't except it. So she did as I asked I proceed to the TA truckstop went to shop and did a full brake inspection paid $89.00 NOTHING was out of adjustment. 3 weeks later I go to court...she never showed up asked for a continuance, I told the Judge she had 3 weeks to prepare your honor I loose a $1000 a day I have everything to move forward and it's not fair for an officer to make a court date then not show up. He agreed looked at my evidence and threw the ticket out. Moral of the story is INDIANA DOT IS AN ENFORCEMENT STATE AND TRY TO MAKE MONEY OFF HARD WORKING DRIVERS OR DESTROY THEIR CSA. sorry for the long story but truth be told.

Honestly, even though I don't like confrontation with anyone let alone a cop, legally we don't have to help them with an inspection. We do it out of fear because they obviously can do anything they want, but seriously we don't have to. The simple reason is that NOBODY, has to incriminate themselves in any investigation what so ever. Basically, when you turned your wipers on and pushed the little button, you screwed yourself. ok so heres what you need to know. I live south of Houston. HPD has what they call an "aggressive drivers task force" it doesnt specifically target truckdrivers, but big trucks pay more money in court. They deliberately get in the center lane and drive below normal speeds in order to get a reaction from other drivers. Primarily, Big Trucks. And if you do ANYTHING that they can get you for, they pull you over and you get a ticket. its all recorded and hard as hell to fight in court. It sucks but Houston area/Harris county has become a money ticket hole for the local police dept and sheriff depts.

    Had one full DOT inspection while I was OTR, not fun. Nerve racking time. Had one small write up for a couple LED's out on one trailer tail light! Mind you, there are quite a few LED's in a single trailer tail light and a couple were out, but the rest still worked. You are right, they are looking for something. The DOT inspections seem to happen out in the middle of nowhere too, some random rest area or such. Meanwhile, I don't drive truck at the time, but see a local day cab hauling shipping containers across town and tractor has a headlight out! Now who get's into their tractor at the beginning of their day and not check and fix a headlight out? Those people get away with SOOOOOOO much that drivers OTR can't get away with at all. I just wish DOT inspectors did in city spot checks on local trucks as much as they do the long haul guys. That's what's wrong with the system right now.

Absolutely ridiculous. All while driving a 2021 cascadia and 2021 53’ van. So it seems random but it’s because of the company’s bad CSA score. Normally the newer the equipment is the less they harass. That damn CSA score though 🤦🏻‍♂️

    A few other channels are saying there is a DOT Blitz running. It sounds like he "had" to give something, but didn't want to actually hurt you. So, once he found a simple warning violation, he went with that so he could justify to his bosses (who will watch their In Car Cameras now, have a few friends who have told me) why he stopped a Lane 1 violation and didn't give anything. So, he checked off a stop, and inspection and a warning. Doesn't mean it didn't suck for you, at all. But it seemed like he was working harder to NOT hurt you, versus write the moving violation or warning and just rail you.

    • @GreenHornTrucker
      @GreenHornTrucker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      BTW, I know I will get grief for this, but it is what it is. It doesn't matter if people like Troopers/DOT or not, they are going to do what they do. The FMCSA and DOT itself is the problem. Now with the ability to go back and watch the cops on their own camera, you have less using "discretion" because everything is questions on their end now.

    • @sachadee.6104
      @sachadee.6104 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. The ticket will also give you the points UNLESS you can successfully fight it. That means going to court and the SAME officier or his boss(?) that wrote the ticket is going to have to agree it was faulty. (By my understanding of it). Good luck with that.

    • @cc99556

      The cop doesn’t have to agree to dismiss the ticket.
      The prosecutor has the sole power to decline prosecution, not the cops. While most prosecutors will consult with the officer, the prosecutor makes the final decision as to whether to proceed with the case.
      Even if the prosecutor proceeds with the case, the judge then has the final decision as to how to adjudicate the case (guilty, not guilty, dismissal, etc.)-and the judge damn sure doesn’t need the cop’s consent to toss a case.

    Correct me if im wrong, but in the US don't they have washer fluid for your windsheild that's meant to be used in warm conditions and in addition one that's mean for cold ? In Europe we have 1 type for winter and 1 type for summer. The one for winter has more alcohol in it for obvious reasons. The one used during the summer has ingredients that make it easier to remove dust, pollen, bugs etc which is common in summer.

    Wow! I was going to call you a drama queen, but I read some comments and I guess most people's experiences were way different then mine. One truck I drove for a few years, I averaged a DOT inspection every 5 weeks. I think I passed 1. It got so I thought about leaving some ticky tack thing for them to find quickly just so I could get back on the road quicker.
    The funniest inspection was on my birthday. The cop found some ticky tack thing and went to his car to write it up. He comes back pretty quick and asks why I didn't cry about it being my birthday to get out of the stop. I told him I get inspected on average every 5 weeks and didn't think mentioning my birthday would matter. He gave me a no violation inspection, I guess as a birthday present.
    If I went through a scale that was doing inspections, I always got flagged for 1. I think there was 1 time out of 20 I did not. I asked constantly why they picked me, until 1 finally told me why. I drove a straight truck hauling campers. On outbound loads, I'd have a camper on the flatbed and tow another behind. Looking back, I rarely got flagged at these times. The problems came when I was dead-heading or had a car/truck loaded for the backhaul. Then I was a quick and easy inspection for the cops. Only 2 axles and no trailer to bother with.
    The worst experience with one of these cars loaded on the backhaul was getting cited for a bent link in 1 of the chains I had securing the load. The reasoning was... only as strong as the weakest link. The problem from my point of view was I was only required to have the load secured at 2 points. I had chains coming of both sides of the rear axle. I had chains in the front coming off both sides, either from the fram or around an A-arm and my winch cable attached in the center of the front to something sturdy. The bent link chain was on one side of the front. I can agree with the weakest link crap, but it was basically a back-up to a back-up and even though it was the weakest, it surely was better than nothing and in no way was it crucial.

    Just consider yourself lucky he wasn’t in the mood to put you out of service, some of those guys get red tag fever and will do whatever they can to completely ruin your entire week by making you leave your truck sit miles away from anywhere parts might be available. I got inspected a few weeks back and apparently my “low air” light’s bulb had burnt out (my truck doesn’t leak air and I run it daily so it never really gets under 90 to trigger the light except when I drain the tanks on Friday’s. Well needless to say the nice officer red tagged my truck and i was stuck at a brake check lot at the top of Cheat mountain on I-68 trying to figure out how to get the 20 miles to the closest truck parts place I could find. After things get a bit “fuzzy” as I won’t be able to say for certain that I did or didn’t lay down across the seats (daycab), sleep a few hours then we’ll after dark I “dreamed” I yanked the red tag off and ran 2 lanes back roads down to get my parts and get her fixed.

    A few summers ago, I was given the most through Level 1 on the side of I5 just south of Tacoma WA by a lady DOT officer.
    She also made me spray windshield washer fluid and in my 32 years of trucking, I've never been told to use that during an inspection.
    She actually got out the creeper, on the side of I5 and proceeded to use it.
    We are talking a full hour on the side of the freeway.
    It was also very uncomfortable because if you've ever driven I5 between Tacoma WA and Portland OR, the drivers are maniacs and I really didn't want an inspection on the side of the freeway.
    Another Washington dot story...I was pulled over on the northbound side of I5 at the Dupont scale. I didn't have an actual paper copy of the trailer registration so I called my carrier and they emailed it.
    I got out my printer and printed it out and she still wrote me up for not having a trailer registration, even though I printed it out, right at the scale house within 15 min.
    That also went on my CSA and my companies CSA.
    Take care

    Colorado used to be horrible with inspections. If they didn't find anything, they would start the inspection over again and 100% find something. I think they got in trouble because they haven't done that in years.
