I only klaared in in 1989, and we still had damned Bedford trucks! Pushing a broken down Bedford from just off the highway near Tempe all the way to School of Armour was not a lekker job. My older brother drove Kwé's up into Angola on Ops Modular and Hooper, carrying 155mm ammo on what was his last Camp. As for me, I was scared of the SAMIL 50 and 100's, so told the Driving and Maintenance captain that my shinsplints hurt on those pedals. Being a typical PF, he sent me to ask the Sister in the sickbay if I could drive the trucks... she said I could drive them! I went back to the captain and told him the Sister said NO. Being a typical PF, he never checked up with the Sister.
Some units used Bedfords as well, we had Samils in all configurations on the border bush war in 1981 onwards......the Kwe 100 6x6 was a serious truck in V10 engine.
The ANC sold the complete ADE plant to a mid-east Arab country. Who never paid for it. Or never paid the SA government. Maybe paid directly into the coffers of the corrupt ANC? PW never had anything to do with any of this. He was too stupid.
Almost 10 000 trucks of the same type from the same manufacturer were sold to the Soviet Union to build the Baikal Amur Mainline in 1974, paid in 1,1 billion German Marks in cash by the Soviets. They did their job, became icons of the Soviet Union and the West Germans sell to anyone if the money is right. Some of them are still working after 50 years, the South Africans chose well technology wise.

Got my driving licence for the SAMIL 100 in 1980 . That thing was, and still is, a real beast 💪
Same year but I only got my driver's licenses for the smaller Samil 20, Unimog & Buffel @One Maintenance, Kimberley 😊
I got samil 20 & 50 but have driven most 💪🏼
My genugtig. Die herinneringe !! Baie dankie.
Logistics especially at the front defines all wars. Great mechanical engineering of that era
Baie cool! Dankie vir die upload!

Agree!
It beats 2024 technology of ANC government.
True

Magirus-Deutz technology from West Germany, enhanced for South African conditions. The very best for anything from Siberia down to the Kalahari.
Thx for your reply and interest. Not many people can appreciate the fact that you stated!

I think some of those Samils are still around
As far as I know there was no successful program to replace them. Previous such programs were canned as far as I know.
Still around. The army had a massive 8 month long refurbishment and modification period a few years ago
They are still actively used by the Army. The latest revisions were made in 2019.

Great memories of our 35mm anti aircraft crew in Samil 100 💪🏽🚀💪🏽
Thx for your interest
As a conscript, I spent many a kilometer and hours in the Samil 50 and Samil 20.
Those were the days!
Awesome video 👌
My licence covered the SAMIL 20 ; 50 & 100 amongst other.
That was when South African was top in Military production.
Ja ek het hulle ook op die grens gery
As die voertuie nou nog gebruik word, is dit 'n bewys van goeie kwaliteit.
What was that big one that had the v10 que or something like that , now that was a beast
In the new SA ...on a quiet night you can hear as Samel rusting!...sad but true
Baie intresant.
Another great invention from P W Botha. Used currently against its inventors for communistic advancement.

The engineering was good. The problem is never with the engineering or the technology - but with the human heart!
A discussion about the current govt can fill volumes but will be unproductive and avail nothing. Let's rather decide what we CAN do!! And we CAN.

It says SAMIL not Buffel or Caspir
Buffel was built on a Mercedes Unimog chasis. Different topic.
