- Made it to the bus! We spend 24 hours at Magic Bus 142 where Chris McCandless spent his final days. The bus and its surroundings made a long lasting impression on us! My hope is that viewers can take with them a sense of the magnetism of the bus and the spirit of Chris' life we experienced out there.

Thank you Naveen. Those words came to me as I was completing my editing of episode 7 and it was truly an inspiring moment. When I watched the completed product, it was emotional as I realized that maybe, just maybe if nothing else in this series makes an impact, that closing statement would. Your comment reminded me of this, and I really appreciate how you acknowledged it.

If you watch "Return to the Wild" you will understand why Chris was out and away from his family and human civilization. He wasn't just out for an adventure. He was alone trying to heal the wounds from a traumatic upbringing. I understand what he was trying to do because his life mirrored mine so closely it is almost eerie. I did the same thing as Chris by spending as much time in the wilderness and away from people, as possible. In the end, I became a Wildlife Biologist and reconciled things in my life. I survived and Chris didn't. Had he survived, I sense Chris would be one hell of a guy and a privilege to call friend.

Chris was born into a gold mine.
He had money, an education, and a family that loved him.
Boohoo so what your mom was a mistress who had “bastard children.” And so what if mommy & daddy yelled at each other & wanted to get a divorce.
His life wasn’t that traumatic.
And honestly, he was a naive idiotic unprepared survivalist that was full of himself. You can see that in how he talks about himself in third person..
His story is a guide about not what to do. He wasn’t noble, and wasn’t a hero.
And now, because of his story, they had to move the bus to a museum bc MANY other deaths have occurred bc of people either looking for the bus or bc they thought he was a legend & they were trying to be like him..
Take note, our ancestors didn’t invent civilization and make shelters, guns, etc. bc they felt free in the wilderness, they did it bc they know it’s a harsh reality that will swallow you whole.
@Sampson Well which was it? Some were saying he lived a privileged life and you are saying he lived a traumatic one How did u learn this and please share the reason why traumatic! They interviewed his parents n they seemed normal and never brought up any reason for your statement!
My heart is heavy. I didn't want to leave the bus either, I felt that pull. Chris was there for sure. The images you captured transported me to that spot. I looked at everything. What an amazing sacred place, it is hollowed ground. I am so sad I did not know of this place until now and that the bus is gone. I would have done anything to get there cause 'I get it 'from afar. Alaska has been calling me for years, to relocate my life there. Not as remote as Chris but enough to clear my head and heart of all the unnecessary noise, of us. I will watch this over and over I know it. I am not truly living, I am existing to work, pay rent and bills with zero extra money. The life of all these wilderness and back road travelers was supposed to be mine. Maybe i will find it yet. Thank you for an amazing journey. I'm glad the stove pipe was not replaced.

Justin, I want to thank you for coming with me on what anyone else would have thought was a crazy idea. You helped make a dream become reality and I'm glad we shared it. You are a HUGE part of this series. I knew years ago when we were working together that someday the two of us would do some great film work and here we are. I also appreciate your patience with me as it did take me a long time to get this finished, but I'm sure now you see why. We share the same intentions of inspiring people, and judging from the comments, that goal has definitely been met! You are a true friend and I love the fact we can always look back on this series and smile. I will never forget it.

I find Chris very interesting, unprepared, but very smart & kind in other ways.
His journey was wonderful & scary, I think he lived in those 2 years, than most people do; and his time at the Magic Bus was a lesson or experience he’ll remember forever!
If his spirit ever lingered around the bus or the area, he would know how so many people cared about him, and wish they could have helped him while he was alive💗. I hope his soul is free and wondering the earth and heaven 🙏🏾😘

Chris is still touching lives. It's as if his spirit is sharing what he learned with each visitor as they come to the bus. It appears that each person that comes is searching for something and they find it there.

Yeah, hopefully the touching involves getting the message across that if you go to the wilderness - prepare!! Chris had a book on flora but probably ate poison berries, he couldn't preserve meat so he wasted an elk's life, he didn't know that the animals in that area don't have enough fat to sustain human subsistence, he took rice but no fats, he didn't have a map, which would have indicated a river cable and a path down without crossing the river. He was warned by the man who dropped him off that he was under equipped and he ignored it, thought he knew better. Nothing to be 'in awe' of.
I just watched this, and have tears streaming down my face, of this journey, and in my own life, it really touched the core. I am grateful as every day is a gift, our connections and experiences. I am also glad to see the suitcase his Mom brought, the items people brought and the little painting of the bus left as a gift, you respectfully cleaned the space, for others to enjoy their experience.Thanks Ryan & Justin. for your insights and sharing your experience, this is a rare opportunity. Thank You with much gratitude, there are times in our lives, we need to clear our minds and head space, our relationships and our perceptions of privilege. The risks and the dangers with the beauty of the wilderness. Wow, I am glad I found this particular video, the both of your experience, watching this video of your experience on the bus.I felt the energy as spirit of Chris, just watching this video, as a form of connection,( even though I may or may not ever get to experience the Magic Bus on my own journey,) with a deeper level of reflection. I ordered Chris's sister's book and watched another story of the 90's on Chris's life.. This video in it's own way, is a better perspective of 2020, and a great extension of the story and it's meaning to so many, while the entire world is isolated on lock down, we do not get to experience the journey as living every experience or moment traveling and experiences, it makes us take stock on importance in life and finding balance. Chris's statement" Happiness is only real when shared. truly hits home." even more so, while we are in self isolation. I am a Canadian Artist mostly nature, I have been in Western Canada for a handful of years to paint here and clear my energy, with great empathy with this story, while watching the movie, this is an even more closer experience to the meaning of the true story.

Thank you. I always wonder what Chris would have thought of how we spent our time at the bus.
I think a lot of people go there and don't realize that they have trauma in their minds and hearts. And to go there, where a life was lived and a life that touched the world, it helps you let go of those emotions and trauma in your body. You read what is written and understand that all humans go through the same things and that humans do better when they share their happiness and their grief. I think going there, you share your happiness and your grief with Chris. It is a place to go grieve for what ever you need. A place to acknowledge this is what real life looks like. The people that made it to that bus before they moved it were lucky to know that experience. Thank you for sharing yours.

I think Chris would not have a problem that you tidied up for him. Just watching made me wonder about him and what he was thinking as he waited hoping for rescue it breaks ones heart to know his anguish. He left a legacy of wonderlust and enduring strength and the will to live through incredible hardship, very humbling indeed. You know Ryan when you talked of you and your son's near death ordeal it came very close to home. When I was 15 ( I am 63 now ) I was in a foster home we went on vacation north of Lac Laronge Sask. Why I don't know but we pitched tent for the girls and the guys, the fosterparents stayed in the camper well as we were getting ready to sleep rocks kept hitting the girls tent and these rocks were fairly big and since the guys were not juveniles but young men and had no history of being mean like that we yelled at them to stop throwing rocks, they said they were not and were already in their sleeping bags so I tattled to the Fosterparents because the rocks were pretty big. So the rocks finally stopped and then we heard big crashing stomping through the bush. We thought it was a bear or elk or moose but we all know what they sound like so it just scared us to death. The next day we went out on the water to fish we had a pretty big aluminum boat so we tried fishing near the falls near our camp and that's where it happened my foster father went too close to the falls and the boat rolled over none of us had floatation vests and I could not swim I went under that boat and sunk like a rock it was so surreal I was drowning but yet I seen myself sitting in a chair watching my life go by like a movie reel, I was only 15 so it was a short film. LOL I have only been in a boat 3 times since then 2 BC ferries and a large crab boat with the help of alot of medication. The mere thought of boating still sends incredible fear through me I have never been able to shake it. But heres the very strange part when years later I started reading about sasquatch I learned that they throw rocks at tents people cabins and that sometimes things happen to those who encounter them, my foster father had to grab my hair to pull me up out of the water. So that afternoon I had another encounter at a rock where I went to clear my mind I felt that I was being watched and again rocks started being thrown but I again thought it was one of the guys and again big giant footsteps crashed through the bush as my foster mother yelled to tell me supper was ready. I wished I had known then what I know now I was fearless at that age and probably would have walked right up to it if it would have showed himself. I always wanted to go back just to see but that's quite the trip and it probably has moved on from there. Sorry for the length but it was just a strange story that left lasting affects on my soul.
Thanks Arlene. When you speak of Chris' anguish, when I was at the bus I had a lot of time to think about what Chris went through. Here I was, lying down where Chris passed away years ago. Those were VERY powerful moments and thoughts. I was looking at all the names and quotes around the bus and I couldn't help but think that despite his suffering and death, he has impacted SO many people, and given them strength. If that is any comfort to his family, I hope it gives them some relief. Thanks for sharing your story Arlene.

What a moment guys, I know I would be talking to Chris. I know his presence is there but I am so happy Chris was found. He was not left for his family to wonder what had happened to him. I would guess the tarp is to keep out the light and elements depending when people visit. I listened to you talk about almost drowning with your son. I almost drowned as a child but I didn’t have any trauma, since you experienced this with your son was the traumatic part. The thought of losing your son and you are his Dad made that moment effect you. You are your son’s protector. You did nothing wrong and thank you for sharing your story about your son.

I'm from the UK, born 3 months prior to Chris, speaking with a friend who like me had been homeless by choice, I said (and he agreed) sometimes when it's a beautiful day you have food and shelter you feel the world is your Oyster, the sense of freedom can't be explained, on the reverse it's a rainy and cold day and you've got nothing to do and nowhere to go that's a downer, but I can see why Chris did what he did, we've become detached from the primordial spirit and being away from society makes you aware of this, sadly Chris never returned from his sojourn as I think he could've inspired people from his experience, although his influence has been and is still felt. RIP Christopher Alexander

I'm a french guy who just watched this, and very funny thing : the red and black scarf inside the bus is a Stade Rennais scarf, a french football (soccer) team. It is actually funny bc this team is located in Bretagne, and there is a running gag in France about ppl from Bretagne who bring their regional flag everywhere. Well this time they really surprised me lol

Wow it was my sons birthday and i didnt really pick him any thing and so i stopped at a yard sale . Saw one of my moms old friends .mom is passed. Any way i was looking around and i saw a wodden plaque there that said" do not go where there is a path, go instead where no path and make your own." Oh my god. I didnt get it tho got a another one that ssid "bebwild " and got home and was listening to u tube music. Eddie vedder had a song called hard , hard sun and saw a video on the movie about chris and him dieing and looking at the sun. Incredible . And then looked up more on utube about more infirmation and came across these 2 gentlemen.wow im blown away wow. Im going to look up my moms ole friend and try to gethat plaque. RIP chris .. sure made an impact on me wow!

Ryan wow. I am so amazed and was during the 7 videos I just watched thanks to Joshua Alexander. I am a big fan of his channel and watched the one where you plowed his driveway. I remember a different America where your kindness and humble demeanor was the norm. I loved watching in amazement the classic car that made this trip for you both an adventure in itself. Its almost like the car lived for the purpose to get you to know it was part of the team. My mom and dad homesteaded in Alaska in 1947 and my sister was born there in 1949 when it was still just a territory. Fairbanks police dept was my dad's employer after he and my mom severed in WWII. I'm humbled by the humanity you guys showed. Please please please bring us more of your way home 🏡 💗💗💗

A miracle, really when I look at all the possibilities of finding the right car, not costing a fortune, big enough for our gear and still good on fuel. My best friend died in 2003 and I know that he stayed around me for several days afterward and even all these years there are times when he makes surprise visits and what a wonderful surprise it always is.

I think the world of Chris and am in awe of what he did with his young life, also enriching many other lives and leaving an inspirational legacy to young people everywhere. But isn't it ironic that he shunned all help, wanted to get almost all of his food from nature, felt confident enough in his own resources to purposefully not tell anyone of his agenda, and yet he comes across a bus and uses this obviously civilization produced object for most of his comfort and ease.

Thank you for making this episode. I only heard about Chris yesterday after discovering and watching his movie. I was only 9 years old when he died so never even heard about him until now. It just shows you how precious life is and how we take it for granted. Chris may have only lived for 24 years but he lived and did more in his 24 years than most of us have done in our whole life. I feel so inspired after watching the movie and seeing this episode, I feel like it has changed me and makes me want to live my life with more of a purpose.

Cool to see this, was planning a trip . Now blown away to see it removed today june 2020, Removed But Never forgotten
I am hopeful that the state of Alaska, perhaps with help from donations, will eventually curate the Magic Bus, do some minor restorations (without repainting or changing it much), and bring it back to Healy... as part of a memorial park and museum, dedicated to Chris McCandless. This could benefit the small town of Healy, the state of Alaska... and safely allow fans to still interact with the bus (which any memorial must still allow, otherwise, what's the point). Maybe the best place might be right there by the lake at the head of the Stampede Trail.

yea Im so bummed I was planning to attempt the trip with my twin brother in 2 years Im so bummed they removed it. The story is so amazing. He wasn't really well prepared but he took on something many of us would love to get to do, and he taught us something we all forget. So many times I just want to disappear and just go live in a cave especially with all the bull shit going on. I hate to think that without Chris I would've never known about the bus or the trail. Im still going in 2 years but it won't be nearly as special as with the bus. Im going because I know how to prepare now and Chris introduced us to one of the most beautiful camp sites I've ever seen. "Happiness is only real when shared".
I am so loving it that you cleaned the bus. I have spent hours and hours watching videos of this bus, wishing someone would tidy it up. Best video of all!!! From listening to all the people who have visited this place I have come to the conclusion this is a "healing" place. Chris did not die in vain.. he died so that so many others find their inner peace!

My idea though is that if there were no bus, he may have carried on and found his way out. In a way I think that bus weakened his resolve.
Ryan I stayed up til 12:45 AM watching this video, I couldn’t shut it down for the night. You do a fantastic job with your videography and you have a great story telling voice. I had not heard of Chris before and now my interest is peaked. I decided I would check and see if I could buy a copy of ‘Into the Wild’ and get an understanding of his plight. You won’t believe this but I went into our local Salvation Army thrift shop, here in Barrie, Ontario, looking for a crappy picture frame and glass that I could use. As I was walking to the cash I was drawn to the book section which isn’t unusual. The very first book I laid my eyes on and read the title was Into the Wild!! Gladly paid the $2 and now to get into it!

Well Ryan I finally read the book. The book was well written I thought. This version of the book had the update on what actually killed him.
As far a Chris’s decision to go into the wild without much planning seemed a little irresponsible for an intelligent individual such as he. I almost got the impression he didn’t care whether he made it out alive or not. There was definitely an underlying mental health issue which is way above my expertise other than to say in this day and age he might have been able to receive help more readily. It must have been an emotional visit for you just the same.
@@larrydurkee5741 I had many of the same thoughts you had when I read the book. Only thing I can say to that is to read "The Wild Truth" by Carine McCandless. It likely will give you more insight into why Chris went north. He no doubt made a few mistakes, but his intentions were pure. He really did intend on going back to civilization.
Ryan, thanks for this journey. When I first saw your title for this series I wondered if it had anything to do with Chris. I watched the documentary first was inspired to read the book when on to read his sister's book, which gave me much more understanding. His story will stay with me forever. Thank you again. You are a wonderful person.

Well worth the wait.....loved this, I could feel the emotion of being there and leaving....thanks for sharing this journey, I saw the movie and now want to get his sister's book. And I agree how being in nature can calm you and clear your head, I love camping, but have never been in a remote area like that and know I will never get that chance, so I truely enjoyed watching this adventure.

Just sitting here listening to you with the soothing sound of the water rushing by is very therapeutic even for me and I can just imagine the smell of nature and the sense of the sun shining into ones soul while you sit there. There is a kinetic energy that lingers there from Chris and I could feel it through this experience that you shared with us....Thankyou so much for this dawning ray of Hope that you have shared and inspired us with. Thanks Kathleen, yes Chris' positive vibes are definitely there. You've confirmed my hope that viewers of this film would understand that. The bus was like such a magnet, I always wanted to be at the bus. We would be sitting down by the water, listening and absorbing in our surroundings and after a short time we would just go back to the bus. I also think some of the positive energy is from the people over the years that have visited the bus. I agree with you that Chris did not die in vain!

I now have read the book into the wild and also watch the movie and I’ve also read the wild truth. I completely understand why Chris did what he did. I can also relate to his family life as a child growing up in domestic abuse as well. What I learned from my childhood was that I definitely was not going to live like that way and have not . …This has definitely impacted me in ways I can’t explain .I have watched everything I could get my hands on about Chris’s journey. He was certainly an extraordinary young man and his sister a very courageous young woman in writing the truth. It has inspired me to definitively continue to journal my story….. Dianne, thanks for commenting, I appreciate your words. Yes, Chris has made a big impression on so many people, I'm sure he would be surprised to know that.
A lot of young people want to "find" themselves.
Sometimes their family or upbringing drives them to leave and sometimes ,like in this case, his motives are obscure.
I don't think he planned ahead, just went with the flow.
Hikers who climb Mt. Washington in New Hampshire without rain or warm weather, even in the summer, are advised to not do that.
But nature is deceptive and every so often a hiker dies of Hypothermia
part way up the trail to the top. This is in an area with a roadway and a lodge on the top and close to civilization.
Chris had wandered around in
places in the lower forty and Mexico but nothing like the unforgiving nature of wild Alaska.
His life was ahead of him ,but he was young and still immature, and like so many others , died before wisdom or experience took over.
The book and movie are a testament to the fragility of all of us and our desire to explore new paths.

absolutely. truly a tragic story. what i loved about the book/movie (hoping it is true) is that chris did have "angels" come into his life along the way that if he had truly listened to them, he might have lived. his naivete and determination kept him from seeing them for what they were and hearing them. they weren't trying to keep him from his dream, just tried to caution him and educate him. i hope young people who see this story recognize this as well. people come into your lives for a reason....take the time to breath and hear their messages

sure I avoided areas that looked iffy.
I took a few mild travel risks, VW Beatles are not off the road vehicles:), but I was close to civilization ,not deep in the wilderness.

This was beautifully done. Just when I thought Id read/seen everything about the incredible Chris M. story, here is this visceral piece that puts a new perspective on it. I've been fascinated and inspired by this story. As an aside, I have a small apartment in DT LA, and if you recall in the movie, where Chris went through LA, there is a scene of Chris ( played by Emile ) sitting in café. I found that café, and sat on that chair, and thought about Chris, coming through there on his odyssey ; LA was bitter-sweet for him and of course, it seemed he found the city energy all too much for him, and was ready to move on.

CNN article dated 2/24/2020: Five hikers rescued on their way back from 'Into the Wild' bus in Alaska. i'm thinking saving for the helicopter ride is the way to go;) such a beautiful conclusion to an awesome series. thank you for taking me along. the reactions you shared were truly visceral and i got goose bumps and tears.

Chris`s spirit will always be felt in that area. I hope a beautiful sign or monument is put in the bus`s place, so that when someone goes there, and they will... they can still find the spot!
I think you are right, his spirit will always be there despite the bus being moved. I hope to someday go back there.

Wow. I binge watch all your previous episodes a little while back and was waiting for this next episode. I started to watch it and wanted a refresher of the movie that I had seen years ago. I watched it yesterday, ordered Corines book and watch a doco that did have his parents and family in it. The parents made me so mad! Clueless to their sons reasons and still in total denial today. What you and Justin have done (and all of the others in the past and future) well, wouldnt Chris get a kick out of his visitors! Thanks Andrea! I have also felt the same way about the parents, just wish they would take some ownership of what happened, and then move on. One can only pray they do this in time. You are so right, even though I don't know Chris, he probably would have enjoyed the visitors over the years! About the suitcase, it would be fine under the bed or behind the stove, the rain can't touch it in either spot. I just figured it would be more noticeable behind the stove instead of hidden under the bed. As long as those back windows stay intact, it should be fine. THANK YOU for commenting!
ParklandFilms it has been my absolute pleasure. That feeling of standing where someone you admired (who has passed on) once stood is such a surreal and moving feeling. To be where they once were is something you just cant describe the feeling of.... I felt like like with our Aussie hero Bushranger Ned Kelly. To stand where his life ended was......surreal. I cant think of another word. Another time that I felt this way was with our most famous horse Phar Lap. His taxidermy body is in a Melbourne museum and to stand beside him made me teary. Thank you Ryan for this series. Xx

It was very good of you to respect the bus by cleaning out others trash... People should think before leaving behind things that will rot and mold etc. Glad you revealed the memorial sign, a very touching video, lovely closing thoughts... My closing thoughts came as Ryan had his final walk around the outside and I was looking at the beautiful wildflowers around the front and by the chair and was thing that nature left flowers at Chris' grave.

Because of videos like this (this is my favorite) I have now read Carine's book, I bought the movie, I bought the documentary, and on the day I started reading the book, Into the Wild, was the day they flew the bus out of this area. So many emotions.. I had to watch this again.
