I prefer using the bag of rice just because it gives me a touch more low end than using a simple pillow. It's more dead, but I feel it more. I hear it slightly less, but if I need to hear it more, I just turn it up in the mix. Reggae is feel good music. You don't play it, you feel it. I need to feel that low end, so for me the bag of rice is the way to go. Want to learn about getting that reggae snare drum sound? Wow that’s really cool. I’ve always liked to experiment with kick drum sounds and feel. It’s one thing to have a low end sound but to feel it in the chest and behind ur foot is important
@@Reggaddiction agreed. You have to feel the note other than just hear it. Otherwise u will try to hit the kick harder to try and hear it to make up for feel But if u feel it you know it’s there
Great video. I'm a new drummer and I actually like the pillow...a little bit more bass. The rice cuts it down too much. Can't wait to see the next video.

I was wondering if the long grain enriched would kill it even more dead...this seems like a whole other video comparing jasmine, basmati and long-grain rice...so then I n I think, why not bring a pot, rice, beans, pimento, scotch bonnet, thyme and water weighing about 20lbs total and in proper proportion to cook; wrap it in a blanket and cook it afterwards during the selecta's set? Any Reasonings on the topic?
Very nice and interesting video !! congrats! Recently I bought a drumset (Sonor Essential Force) 22x18, 10x8 12 x 9 14x14 FT. Now I trying to make the bass drum sounds like Boomm, it means, low tone but with some sustain, trying to be a little more modern sound. Do you have any suggestion to sound like that? any comments will be grateful.
With reggae music the space doesn't matter has much compared to recording for example rock drums. That's because the drums tend to have little reverb and very short resonance. They are more dry. So if you close mic everything you won't hear much of the room sound. What matters way more than the room is the feel and talent of the drummer. If you have a big enough space where you can record drums, bass and rhythm guitar the same time, the feel of the reggae groove that you're recording may be better. Great question Skiroy!
Greetings, great video, very interesting... One thing I noticed in old videos is that they often used black dot heads on the kick drum with some muffling. I even watched some videos that they put a blanket instead of the resonant head to cover the mic... Great video, hope to see more in toms and snare on reggae music... Irie.
Definitely cool methods I've been using a pillow for a long time and I was thinking about adding some phones to the inside of my drum instead. To be honest I could not tell a difference in the sound between the pillow and the rice. Then again my ears are horrible 😂

Yes, I find that if I can not only hear it but feel it while playing with the band it makes me perform better.

Yep the pillow is good too. Many people say the rice makes it too dead. Its all personal perference.

Will I get better results with high quality basmati rice?
Hahaha nice one! Don't spend an 1hr in the grocery store trying to decide this one.

With the big bass drum (22inches), I like the tone of the felted batter head and either a pillow or bag of rice inside.
If you could design a room to record reggae drums what size, shape and ceiling height would be ideal?
