Hello Mr Tom! My name is pete and i am twelve years old. I watch all your videos and you are a hero of mine. I started out flyfishing when I was four years old. I have fished in the great Smoky mountains all my life and have started to learn from my dad how to be a better fly angler in the last few years. From watching your videos I have started to expand my game to flyfishing for bass and carp. Usuallly I just fish attractor dries in the mountains which is a lot different than swing ing around big streamers on a 6 weight! I am going to the beach this spring break and I am saving up for an 8 weight so I can fish in the surf and in the inlet. The hard thing is I have watched a lot off reviews and a lot of them say the Orvis clearwater and orvis encounter are beginner rods. This is hard to believe but in your honest opinion do you think they would perform well because it is hard to save up money as a kid. Thank you if you could could you reply about the rod issue. One last thing I have just started making my own fly fishing youtube videos and if I could give you the name of the channel in another comment section of another video that would mean the world to me if you subbed. Pete, these rods perform very well and are less expensive because they are made in Asia and not in our own rod shop. They are made to our designs and are not quite as light, strong, and accurate as our H3 and Recon rods but still great. I fish some of them myself quite often. And they are not "beginner" rods. They are full-performing fly rods that will do anything you need them to do.

Did this back in 1997 on the Caniapiscau River. At the time a 14 inch was my biggest, so a 5 lber on a hair mouse was mind blowing. Never got used to how they came out of the water first and grabbed the mouse on the way down. This brought back great memories.

The northeastern US had brook trout like this for centuries until their ecosystems were destroyed/depleted in the 20th century. Just a reminder to protect and preserve your fisheries

Caught the two biggest rainbows of my life over the weekend on the same rig. The first fish took the trailing nymph, and the second bigger fish took the woollybugger up front. Checking your line and knots is a great tip, but also check your flies! I'm glad that second fish took the bugger, because the first fish bent the hook on that nymph and I didn't check for it. I could have lost the biggest fish of my life, so check those flies too folks!

Damn that mouse in the thumbnail is a gorgeous fly...I tried tying one years ago but it looked more like Chernobyl version of a Dahlberg Diver...you know the saying, “it’s a face only a mother could love”? Well that didn’t even apply to this monstrosity...however, I caught some ginormous bass with it.😁

Nice footage of the catching of brookies. Wish there were closeups of the mice patterns and talk about the rod, reel, line, leader setup.
Very good point and in future videos we will ensure those are included. I can tell you the patterns we used were: Gurgler (tied with white foam back and purple body/hackle and grey tail) and Carmele's Master Splinter. The rod we used was a six weight for nine foot with a fast action to make long casts with large flies. We used a WF6F flyline and 2x or 1x tippets as hits were aggressive. Hope this helps. Thanks

I live in colorado. we have so many fly fishers that when u use a reel and pole with a spinner or spoon u hit more than flys
Ya I totally agree. There are not many rivers here that you can fish alone for even a little bit. I hate the idea of catching trout on a spoon. One time I was fishing the South Platte and I had no luck so far. Then this guys pulls up 40 feet away from me can catches a 20 inch brown in his first dozen casts using a spoon. The irony is that I caught 4 fish, lost 4 and that guy probably caught 5 and lost none it's just how it goes.
Micro Japanese Spinners on a Tenkara Rod or traditional fly fishing gear is deadly .3oz to .5oz spinner.
Don't Underestimate those Marabou Jigs. 1/64 or 1/80oz work with Tenkara Rod or Traditional Fly Rod.
OK it works, but is a mouse on a fly line considered a fly or a lure. It's like having a discussion about "Quigley Down Under" being a true western. If I got rid of the barb on that thing would I be able to se it at Seyon/Noyes Pond in Groton Vermont.. Is it legal. If it works that good, why bother going to Labrador

I fish the Big Mouse ... got big ole whiskers and a tail that sticks right out
I have one I got, but I find it super hard to cast, like it makes my leader/tippet go all wonky, I find it doesn't wanna go back straight or forward straight, I used all sizes of tippet to try to see a difference, also tried using straight 10lb maxima leader material and still can't cast it out smoothly... it socks cause I know it does catch fish if you get that 1 good cast
First off, not sure how your casting the fly but we recommend you use an open loop style backcast versus a tight one, like used for dry flies. You won't cast as far but it does help propel the fly. We can post a link to this cast if you wish. How long are your leaders? We too like to use 10 or 12lb maximum leader material for this purpose. We try to keep our leaders relatively short, 6-8 feet in length. The other impact is the flyline. We also try to use flylines (WF6F) with short but heavy heads that are designed for specifically casting large wind-resistant flies like mice patterns or large streamers. Perhaps these suggestions will help.
@@newflyfisher awesome thanks for the reply, I'll try using a shorter leader, I normally use 9 or 10ft taper leader, ill try going down to 8ft, everything is pretty much closed for season for us here , but I'm gonna try it on chain pickerel this weekend cause that's basically the only thing open this time a year
