Honestly I think it’s great that a lot of us English viewers are here because of Yun Jin. Mihoyo created a character designed to highlight the appeal of Chinese opera, and a lot of us picked up what they were putting down and decided to go out and expand our own cultural horizons as a result.
I don’t speak the language, and I have only the most cursory understanding of the story based on a google search that also gave me a lot of etsy product suggestions, but the aesthetic is so captivating and the voices are so unique (to me as a USAmerican) and beautiful that it’s absolutely worth watching even without English subs.

@Atomix A idk i think its not just americans. yea there are some people who do tend to go overboard worship other cultures, i see lots of different nationalities interested in each others lifestyle, traditions and history and i mean, i think its ok! its fun to study other peoples way of life and i think holding an inteest and appreciation is ok and shouldn't really be looked down upon! I mean its better than ignorance which leads to misunderstandings and fights, right? :)

It's amazing how all these non-Chinese are here because of a video game. Most Chinese are so sick of hearing Beijing/Cantonese opera being blasted from grandparent's radios or forced to watch endless hours of it during Chinese New Year that we just can't stand it anymore. LOL. But after turning 30 or 40 (depending on sophistication & maturation of aesthetics & musical taste), Chinese grow to appreciate our traditional forms of music again.
Check out KUNQU, it's the oldest form of Chinese opera, from Eastern China (a lot more slow & meditative).
Also, nowadays there are of course female performers, but back in the day, women were banned from performing opera (as they didn't want them to become prostitutes) so men played the female roles as well. Including this. So what you're watching here is essentially a traditional Chinese DRAG PERFORMANCE. Shanté you stay. LOL.

Full of Chinese value and spirit. Only after so many years, then I can understand the details and symbols in the performance, understand the emotions of the roles. Shred many tears, eventually matched my childhood moral teaching with this story.

the script is typically full of traditional literary words even most Chinese ppl wouldnt understand without watching the subtitles. Besides the translated script will be too wordy to follow you will definitely lose track of the performance. So let it be, appreciate the show.
btw this is actually fairly "new " peking opera play, created in the year of 1940 . The theme is about to give and help out of kindness and mercy, and late ending up being paid back with gratitude.
