    I feel the green card for a more natural look is the only one I'd use. Maybe blue also for a sky look.

    I do bird photography as my true love but recently got the laowa 100mm based on your videos. Im slowly learning but its so different! My main problem is being comfortable with such a shallow DOF but stacking is working (again thanks to your tutorial)!

    I like it, one of the reasons being that it’s easier to see some of the colours in the insects. I think it’s probably worth on a personal level playing around more with different cards, colours and patterns that fit someone’s photography specifically.

    One thing I noticed about your videos is that you respect and love nature, as a nature photographer I love that ❤
    Also, even tho shooting live bugs is extremely harder with the stacking.. you prefer not to kill or use dead bugs. I respect that too ❤

    I love the outdoors Micael and indoors Micael! I am still learning so much from your videos. I am currently using Olympus E510. I got it years ago when it first came out. I used it a few times and it lived in my closet for a very long time. I didn't know anything about all the different avenues of photography. I have just ordered a Canon Rebel T7 which will be here some time this week. I want to learn as much as I can about macro photography and your videos are truly helping me. Thank you! I always leave thumbs-up!

    I really like the look they give to the photographs. I don’t think that it would work for all macro though. Another genre of photography where those would look great is water drop photography. But, I think the cards would need to be a little bit bigger. Thanks for taking us along!!

    I see the second video with a similar shooting technique, only in that video the guy held the flash with his other hand. Everyone shoots how they want, but at higher magnifications, especially when stacking, stabilization is important! it's hard to take a good photo with one hand when your set weighs 3+ kg. Thank you for the video!

    Enjoyed this walk with you and interesting to see you using the OM system and these cards. I think the cards increase the visibility of the subjects and give creative options. For the price, I plan to give them a try. Great to get the inspiration. I look forward to your comparison of the OM and SONY systems. I have an Olympus and Sony too. I like the weight and clarity of the Olympus system, but prefer the resolution of the Sony. Since Image quality if my highest value, I've pretty much given up on the Olympus, but I always appreciate your take on these things.

    This whole struggle between smaller sensors and the size and expense of full frame, combined with the amazing colours available in the Fujifilm X system, is exactly why I have ditched full frame, moved to Fuji X which I use for almost everything. The quality is almost always on par with full frame, with just a few exceptions like high ISO, where I accept the compromise, partly because of the X system's attractive noise characteristics.
    I do keep a Fuji GF system with a couple of very special lenses like the 110mm, for when I absolutely want higher quality, like portraits, but this is not because I split my day-to-day photography in two, like with the full frame + OM setup, more because once in a blue moon I want to play with something else. I will have sold most of my GF lenses very soon.

    I was wondering what the ticking/rattle sound was with each shot? Is that just the shutter? Or focus stacking? It’s an unusual sound.

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark. First of all, I love your videos - found your channel recently and you are great at talking about gear.
      When doing rapid focus stacking in-camera with the Olympus cameras, they can only use the electronic shutter - so the camera itself will be completely silent. What you hear is the flash.

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MicaelWidell wow, thanks so much for the encouraging words! I keep coming back to your videos, because I really want to do more insect photography. My attempts so far have been unspectacular to say the least.
      The focus stack in camera sounds great, and that works in coordination with the flash? Like you get a flash for each shot?

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markwiemels Yes, the OM system is truly great for macro photography, as it is the only system where you can have the camera take a fast focus stack in sync with the flash, and even have the camera put the stack together in close to real time. The only limit to how fast you can stack is how fast the flash is. The Godox v350o is a favorite of mine and many other Olympus macro photographers, because it is very fast, powerful while being small and compact.

    nice! a question: how many of the final pictures that you show here are actually stackings and how many are just single shots?

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hmm I think around 30% of the photos in this video are stacks. The rest single frames. The reason is that stacks often fail, especially when the insect is moving fast.

    • @MikeLegris
      @MikeLegris ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is this why the flash sometimes is like a strob?

    • @markbernhardt6281
      @markbernhardt6281 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MikeLegris You have to shoot a bunch and hope one is in focus. Pretty much impossible to know how many 'keepers' until you get home. Some people use their body to focus, slowly moving the camera in, shooting all the way from one side of focus to the other. Because with that shallow DOF it's impossible to hold focus on a spot.

    Hello indoors Michael! I'm interested in the fast tapping noise your camera makes! I am in the fujifulm family and I'm waiting for my first external flash in the mail. Will my camera be able to shoot photos that quickly? With your Olympus camera, are you using a photo stacking mode that takes all those photos at once?

    My daughter got a set of these. I have used them a few times. They can, at times, enhance images, particularly when there is something distracting in the background. They are also a pain to use, as I normally have my hands full when shooting. I haven't tried using the little gooseneck, alligator clip thingy that came with it, which you could probably use to clip to something nearby and position the card where you need it. Of course, you would have to remove the individual card from the stack, and then put it back afterwards. OK, if you have the time. I've also thought about taking a few out of focus foliage pictures and print them to use as more natural looking backgrounds.

  • @dougsmit1
    @dougsmit1 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe these were intended to be used as out of focus backgrounds but suffer from showing screen printing details when the fly lands on the card. Home made with spray paint (end of can remnants) might be better. Green and other natural colors seem like a good idea.
