TH-cam has really become the new Jazz-Corner where good musicians like you can explain everything in detail. It really works.

Brilliant! Can't wait to dig into this song. I've been trying to figure it out for as long as I can remember, and never managed the final two chords. Various real books are adamant about some chords that just don't sound good to me on those positions, a sax player and some other people taught me a version briefly at some points and I promptly forgot and couldn't reach them anymore. I think the way you explained it makes the most sense to me, that it's not necessarily a fixed thing that happens there on the last bars, and almost each step of the song can be interpreted as several chords depending on what the bass player and the context is hinting at. So it's nice to get to the level where we can keep it open for the improvisation to dictate where to go. I still feel like I'm far from being able to improvise on it but this video is helping! Thanks for the lesson!

    Thanks for this, Tony.
Any exposition of a Wayne Shorter tune is gonna be a trip.
I really enjoyed your improv @ 9:30. I liked the impromptu development of motifs and . . . the sweet scent of Mr. Evans on the last ii- V.
    Dug it

Gr8! thank you ! But... don't forget to talk about the improvisation of Ron Carter and Tony Williams, they make the greatness of the repetitions !

Totally cool. Oddly enough, this is exactly where I am in my playing right now. Once you start to dig this particular set of bittersweet and noir tonalities, that's what you want to hear for a while.

Wayne Shorter wrote it. But it was on the Miles Dais record,d and there was a lot of improvisation even around the melody.

Great video, thank you. Any chance you’d consider doing a companion video exploring the voicings Herbie uses throughout? The closed shapes are great for handling the melody. Wondering about the open voicings he plays.

Hey Tony. I am interested in having jazz lessons but haven’t really found a teacher near me that interests me. I don’t live in Atlanta, but I want to know whether you would give online lessons? Thank you!
