Crazy thing is, this crossing DID NOT HAVE GATES (only had lights) back in 2007 when StreetView visited it for the only time. :O

4:18 Yep at Wallangarra on the Queensland/New South Wales border in Australia twelve or thereabouts both narrow gauge and standard. They are not used today though because they were all made redundant with the uniform gauge line opened closer to the coast between Brisbane and Sydney. Some tracks are now sealed over with bitumen. But at Coffs Harbour in the 1980s there was once at least six or so protected by a gated level crossing until December 1994, now down to one but the line is still busy connecting two major capital cities on the eastern seaboard.

Looks like an intake or outgoing assembly yard with a couple of yard bypass (mainline) tracks in the middle of it.
I used to trainwatch around Homewood, IL - it had a very similar sort of area where electric passenger lines, mainline freight, an intake yard *and* an engine repair shop all came together in one spot and made for some first class trainwatching. No grade crossing, though - there actually was a pedestrian tunnel under all the tracks (and staircases to the Metra electric tracks and the Amtrak station).

Yep that area is a collector yard was used in ww2 for freight going into oak ridge tn and for the Kingston steam plants coal cars back in the day. One of thows tracks are the one that circles rockwood and harriman tn as a turnaround for heading back to the Knoxville Tennessee yard and for the turn back to Chattanooga.

Good footage. A 12-track grade crossing with what I'm assuming doesn't see much vehicle traffic makes sense. This would never fly in a more populated area, though.

Dad worked on the Railroad 20 years. For Father's Day Fuzzilla Slept on top of the grill most of the day & I broke down and Cleaned inside Dad's truck plus Detailed the whole Mustang as they were both much needed. I cost me both days at the gym, I am very sore today; too much work all weekend to workout as well so I will go today and work on Back and Triceps Carefully. I will continue to be here with clips from my Twitch streams and talks with Fuzzilla. My brother is getting Married July 7th.

    Our hero.
As a kid, I remember track crossings like this in several spots near the railyards that usually intersected major roads. Had some major traffic back-ups waiting for the trains to cross. Some of them were so wide that the city just went ahead and put overpass bridges above the tracks. And, for their efforts, years later the railroad closed the yard.
This was in scenic Hammond, Indiana. Which, if scuttlebutt was true, used to have more railroad track per capita, and more trains and cars passing thru it than any other place in the country. Today, or course, that's that true, but it's still pretty busy with trains running in and out of Chicago. Hammond was the last point before hitting the south side of Chicago and many lines used Hammond for yards and offloading to avoid the jam in the city. Every major eastern or southern line ran thru it as well as the many bridge lines moving product and materials for the steel mills and processing plants. Before they moved, that included moving cattle and hogs thru to meat processing plants in the area. Nothing smells better than a mix of chemicals, steel mill soot and live animals.

Brief history lesson of Harriman yard....... old L&N yard where they made up the freight going anywhere on L&N Line, and as I recall L&N actually designation 4 lines to directional flow of freight, aka mains, and the rest were make up areas. Also big yard area in down town Knoxville that was old L&N and used to run by on southside of Grampa's farm ( west side of Knoxville).

There used to be a crossing in Charlottesville Virginia that literally was 15 railroad tracks it took about 5 mins to cross because sections were old. Well they took out some of the tracks because of the length of time and closed the road permanently off so theirs no crossing at all anymore. Used to be Buckingham Branch CSX NS and Amtrack lines that ran. It was so many you had to count going across but thats back in the 90's

Interesting. I remember a grade crossing back in the 1950's outside of Buffalo at the long-gone Gardenville reefer yard. Jus east of the NYC roundhouse. I was in the 4th or 5th grade and Dad took us over there to watch the switchers make refridgerated produce trains.
That yard is gone and the roundhouse platform is at the train museum in Industry, NY south of Rochester, NY.
    Good memories!

The vehicle entryway to the RF&P Potomac Yard was multiple crossings - not a single crossing. A nine track monster, but broken into four sections (three, three, one, and two). The two three trackers were spurs and switchlines, as was the one; the two was the main line (and is still present). The property is still being redeveloped; to the left is US 1 between Alexandria and Crystal City/Pentagon City and (eventually) Amazon HQ2.

We've got large crossings like that but not quite so many tracks. I don't like to cross them. Sometimes the engines come in there to pick up box cars. They have to pull forward, switch tracks, then back up, attach the cars, then pull forward with the newly formed longer train. That can tie up the crossing seemingly forever. They also have to sound their horns as they back up, so can be quite noisy as well.

  • @lucaslawless4291

There's a crossing near me called Holgate Street in Seattle, WA. It's only 7 tracks, but the interesting part about it is that it runs through the middle of a joint Amtrak and Sounder (local commuter) yard. Every time I get down there I usually tons of trains, such as Amtrak Cascades with their awesome Talgo sets (If you don't know about these look them up they are really rad), the Amtrak Coast Starlight and Empire Builder, tons of Sounder Commuters, and tons of BNSF Freights and Locals. If you're lucky, you can even catch the Boeing Train going by with it's load of 737 fuselages on it! Best part too, there's a Krispy Kreme donut shop right next to where I park! Best place in town!

Jaw Tooth there’s lots of spots you could spend a month around New York City tons of movement with Conn. Mass. all New England lines work their way to and around the city. I live upstate a couple miles north of Mohawk River (40 mi. ) n. w. Of Albany main line runs along the River from Buffalo to NYC. If you ever come north pick summer or fall .winter is a little rougher than what your used to. I’m sure you could deal with it, but it’s more enjoyable in good weather ! Thanks for the reply !
