I'm a HDrive guy with about 6,000 titles and use some of the better (older) BluRay Players. I have external DAC (a nice one in an ADCOM) and the BluRay is connected to my T.V. so I can pick and choose what I want.... it's not perfect, but most of the players I get are USED and typically under $5. BUT... I'm always looking for more RECENT Players as my Digital Files are 24/96 - 24/192 FLAC and the older BluRay the less likely they can read the files (on th downside.)
      ...... PEACE - m. :)

I don't stream music much but when I do I use the Aiyma T9 hooked into the Aux of my vintage pioneer. It works with a PC connected & BT. Occasionally I'll also use the optical in off the TV as well. The only thing I can see that this offers is being able to use an SD card. What I'm personally looking forward to getting is an eversolo DMP A6 sometime in the future.

I don't use streaming services - TH-cam aside - and I also have a large collection of CD rips.
However I find the flexibility of a couple of WiiM devices and a NAS to be superior to any other solution that allows me to own my music and not have to worry about an ISP that most certainly doesn't worry about customer support and reliable service(!)

That's exactly what I do on my Oppo 205. On a lightning quick 4TB Samsung T7 SSD drive, I load up all my meticulously cultivated SACD /DVD-Audio ISO files and play them directly off the USB drive. It may forgo the "pretty menus and cataloging"...but it sure sounds a whole lot better than over the network.
By the way, most volume controls if they can't be expressly bypassed, effectively work that way by turning them all the way up to 100%. The way the Eversolo A8 does it. Give that a try and see how it sounds.

A Hi-Res, multiple file type media player with remote control is very handy, and perfect to fill a spare pair of preamp or integrated amp RCA inputs.

Until the transport mech gives out on the CD player and replacements are no longer available.
In my case it was a lack of CDs available without importing and being mugged on shipping, import duty, then 20% UK VAT and a ridiculous Royal Mail processing fee that rivals the cost of the CD itself before shipping and tax.
Prior to leaving the EU I could buy a CD with free shipping from a big Swiss seller for £7 - £10 with no extra charges.

I have a setup that works like this but for less, Raspberry Pie Zero W 2, running Volumio, into a $20 dac shim from pimoroni and into my Fosi TB10D and out to my bookshelf speakers. You can store a lot of music on your MicroSD or use NAS or a whole slew of streaming options. It does take a little fiddling with the config file to get the DAC to work. Another option is to use any DAC you have that can take a USB input.

The reason for a player like this lies in a puristic trait of audiophile psychology: As far as I am concerned, (and there are others like me) I tend to eliminate any potentially problematic element in my reproduction chain. For instance I have eliminated the crossover and almost elinated the interconnects. I do use an old WAV player directly connected to a NOS dac, so, although I am limited at 44/16, I have proudly(!) eliminated the PC/USB cable, server and all internet connections or the CD transport mechanism, since I use SD cards loaded with 44/16 WAV files. I can asure any audiophile about the benefits of shortening/simplifying the signal path, but I am pretty sure that, at least the true ones, are already convinced and intrigued. So, yes I'd welcome a product like this if it were to take me to the next level, the level of "hi-res" music files, with some very welcomed pluses of convenience. So, what I'd wish to know (and I don't see in this review) is the quality of the internal dac (it does not have a USB output and I recon it as a small minus, especially for DSD playback) the convenience of file-surfing (especially with, big external HDs) and the quality of the "preamp". At least we should have been informed about its performance compared to streamed (via cabled internet) identical content: Does it out-perform a regular streamer, as expected? Also, does it outperform a classic PC/USB cable to external dac(of similar or half the price) set? I hope these questions will be answered, in the end.

Ouch! And I don't even own vinyl. In all fairness to those who do wrangle records, there's lots of digestible material on album covers and liners that can enhance a listening session. I'm old enough to have amassed a giant record collection, but don't have one. I admire those who have And all the more so if they moved many times over the decades! At my age, my hearing probably wouldn't detect sound differences of vinyl versus streaming services or CDs. I'd hear pops and crackles, but I have plenty of those already from my knees and other joints!

Yes this is perfect for 10 years ago. The one thing that drives me nuts about streaming is the audio levels between tracks on an album. They are not consistent. 3 to 5 db difference from track to track. Tidal, Amazon. I'm sure every service does it. Try out the Dio album Holy Diver. You'll see. And when you have it cranked (80 db ish) you could fry your speakers. So this still might be an alternative. ?? Thanks for the video Randy 🤘🤘🤘

You know that phrase “stay in your lane”? I think that’s what wiim’s doing. It’s a streamer. That’s what it want to do, that’s what it does well, and that’s it. It seems like pretty much everything else has a USB port, and often times a card slot, as well. Wiim doesn’t need to go there.

    • @SteveWille

@@SyzygyNoon Perhaps, but streaming and playing locally sourced are not really different lanes. From a technical and software standpoint there is virtually no difference between playing audio from a local file or what is identical information streaming from a network connection. Player software like Roon, Adrivāna, and Volumio all do just that. Even Wiim already does this is a limited way when it provides audio for testing the DAC connection. If there was only a way to get analog output from an analog input. Maybe storing something on a disk, and then using a small rock to gather the information through the magic of magnets that would create a signal. That signal could then go to the amplification of choice. I’m just spitballing here. This needs more time for development.

A small desktop player with fun meters (and maybe a red, yellow, or amber led display instead of that tired blue) sounds cool, but add in the cost of a hard drive/high capacity SD card and a headphone amp and.... nah, Jellyfin sends bit-perfect audio to my AVRs without any hiccups thanks to money I've already spent.

Seems like so many cheap amp/dac combos add sd card music playback as a feature to pad their stats when music navigation is impossible beyond forward/back/shuffle. This seems to at least take a step forward to "bare minimum navigation" but for $200? At least put the OLED screen to good use and have an option to display the album art when playing like any other dedicated DAP.

This function is often included in a streamer, as you mentioned, to play stored digital files from a NAS and/or a USB drive. And you can do this with a computer, obviously. I think if you set the volume to maximum, then you would get full resolution.
What is the navigation of the files like? I would imagine that if you had a lot of music in a lot of folders - it could get a bit cumbersome to find what you want to play?

This product would be for me if I didn't already have the Topping M50, which is basically the same, just without VU meters, DAC or volume control.

I think Linkplay omitted USB data transfer because either they wanted to keep the design as similar to the Mini for cost or reasons of power, since they supply a cheap mobile phone charger for a power supply.
Given the cost is roughly double of the Mini and the popularity of using USB connection for DACs, I do consider that to be something the PRO should have.

  • @ScottGrammer
    @ScottGrammer ปีที่แล้ว +1

8:08 Everybody hates on digital volume controls, but the fact is they're just fine. Yes, they give up resolution, but all volume controls do that. When you turn the volume down - by any means - the lower levels of the music disappear into the noise of the system, or into the noise of the environment where you're listening, or into the sub-0dBA SPL region where you can't hear anything. So, you see, digital volume controls don't actually hurt anything. Unless you're recording the output, in which case, yes, you want to avoid digital (or analog) volume controls.
On the other hand, ideally, the volume control should be placed as close to the end of the system chain as possible in any given system. This way, you get the best possible signal-to-noise ratio.

I have about 3,000 CD's ripped to a 4TB hard drive (I have a back up). I have it hooked to my PC, output to a Cambridge DACMagic 100, out to my Pioneer receiver. I use iTunes as an interface and have an iTunes remote control app on my phone. I use this setup in my "man cave".
What I need is something like a WIIM that has Airplay but with a quality DAC built into it so I can stream my personal library on my living room stereo.
I could get a WIIM and a separate DAC, but I really prefer a one piece solution. If I start chaining gadgets together in the living room, the wife will not be pleased. And if she ain't happy...

    • @pauln6803

Well the Mini is small enough to hide!
You should be able to make your music drive sharable through your home network and treat it like a NAS enclosure.
Alternatively, a dedicated NAS setup to backup files onto a second drive is probably a better solution, albeit a more expensive one.
The inbuilt DAC of the WiiM is perfectly usable.
No, it's not great and there are better DACs for not a lot of money that can make good use of the WiiM's bit perfect S/PDIF output, but it's not what you could call bad when you take the price of a Mini into account.

I'm old but people forget about the first streamer, and that was the Apple Airport express. You could extend your network, Had a builtin DAC 16/44, either optical or 1/8 jack. Place it near your home amp or reciver, also it allowed you to hokup a printer to it for wiless printing ( back when printers didn't have wirless capability). It would work on windows too. itunes would allow you to play wave files as well for full CD quality.

In the late 90's I was working with a friend who owned an audiophile record label and we built a prototype component digital audio player that used a (then internal - the dominant external drive was probably SCSI at the time) HDD to store MP3 and WAV music and play it out a high end signal path (we stole a lot of parts from audiophile CD players at the time). It was really cool, sounded awesome and a fun project that blew people away when they saw it (playing audiophile digital music without a computer - Whaaa???) but it never made sense to build it financially. We've come a long way.

Very very very seldom do I have ever problem with each enemy because I am so close to the origin Aiden Tower did I would never have to worry about it I know a lot of people have problems with all sorts of streaming services in the reason being is there living in areas where AT&t who is the mother of all communications Giants in the United States refuses to invest any money in re broadcasting towers.. because the only way they're going to build in a place is where the incomes are above 5 * the and they have more than 60% of their population owning their homes rather than and that's the truth.. believe it
