@@bertoliniduce the BNC is just a composite output. The video will be low quality analog standard definition so not really a viable tapeless option for a digital HD camera.
I shot with a Canon XH-A1s for over a decade. The "Focus Preset" switch allows you to set a manual focus point which the camera will remember and automatically focus to when you push the switch forward, so you can perform an automatic and repeatable "rack" focus. A very slick and useful feature. "Kelvin" is the scale for white balance temperature: for example, daylight is around 5200 K and incandescent lights are approx. 3200K. When setting custom white balance, zoom in on a something white (or, better yet, a custom white balance card) until it fills your field of view, then push the custom white balance button to lock it in. Focus peaking is a real-time focus mode that uses the camera’s Live View focusing aid to highlight peak contrast areas with a false-color overlay in your viewfinder. This can help you determine what part of the image is in focus before you shoot. I used the "Component Out" jack on the back for a component cable connected to an external monitor. The "Video 2" jack is for connection to a TV monitor. The "C" zoom speed selection will give you a constant zoom speed; you can select from sixteen different constant zoom speeds by using the little wheel on top that "just says fast." The "little window" on the front if your auto-focus sensor, which you definitely don't want to block while shooting. Be careful not to press down on the top of the camera's microphone, such as when you're stuffing it into a camera bag--it will break (I know from experience--it happened twice to me!). I used a third-party sun shade for the external viewfinder, and also an external LCD monitor, mounted on the cold shoe, which worked great. For HDV export to your computer, refer to page 88 in the manual (PDF available on the web).
Glad this kinda stuff is coming back into popularity I have my XH-A1 in like mint condition and just sitting in my closet for years. I might have to throw it onto the market.

I do not miss that job.
I would go with one of these. There are a few different sizes I forget what size the xha1 uses. Dude I just found your videos last night while looking for a manual for the XL1 I just ordered, love the work man! Can't wait to get abducted into the rabbithole
Oh it’s definitely a rabbit whole haha but it’s such a fun hobby to have especially because these cameras are becoming more and more rare in working condition
Hey, Brandon! What’s the easiest most efficient way to transfer video from this camera to my Mac mini? Is there a FireWire DV to USBc dongle option? Also, is it possible to do this on an iPad Pro?
Yes I love the look of super 8 film I’m just not sure how to process the footage. Those kinds of cameras would be a whole new section of reviews on my channel too
I bought one of this at a yard sale for $20 dollars, it is in a very good cosmetic condition, and being honest I don't know nothing about Cameras, it turns on, but I noticed that unlike you, when I rotate the dial to other position than extra content or just On, for example TV or any other mode, the lights on the dial turn off, what Am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.
just picked this camera up for $100 on an auction site. came with EVERYTHING but a battery. chargers included tho. very stoked. any chance you have another link for a compatible fisheye? the one you listed is no longer available or in stock
Hey man I love your videos. I'm trying to upload footage from a sony dcr-hc52 to my laptop and im not sure how to go about that. Do you have any suggestions?
do you find that the ClearClick 3.0 creates artifacts and banding when capturing the footage? When trying to digitize tapes using various cables and adapters, I noticed a lot of banding, even in footage where the falloff was nice and smooth when hooking the camera directly up to a TV. Thinking about ClearClick but I'd like to try to preserve as much quality as I can... any tips appreciated.
I just ordered a AV/digital converter for my XHA1, Red white and yellow plugged into converter, and the 3.5av cable only works when plugged half way into the camera ? Do I need a different sized cable or is the AV port broken in my XH? If so can I adapt from FireWire / AV ?
Your av port might be messed up. I know the xha1 has been known to have issues with the FireWire port burning out. But I’m not sure if that affects the av port as well.
I don't know if you read the manual or saw info about it but (( I have an XHA1 )) skip using the RCA-outs. .... Don't waste ur time .... Use the "Component-Out" Port .... Get a "Component-Out Port"-to-HDMI adapter .... Get a good one ( about $50 ) .... Why ? 1080 vs 480 out that's why.... Those RCA's are not outputting in 1080. The "Component-Out Port" does that... and it's a pain in the neck to get familiar with what I'm telling you, but it's worth it. Once you have a "Component-Out Port"-to-HDMI adapter you can route to stuff like Atomos Ninja V external monitor/recorder (and not have to use that crappy built-in LCD screen ) or output to a computer using an Elgato CamLink HDMI-to-USB capture card adapter ($69 on Amazon) or even the generic HDMI-to-USB capture card adapters for $15 on Amazon which do work and pretty good for their price ( I have a few of those plus ElGato CamLink)..... By the way there is no FireWire in this Device. People mistakenly call it that, but I assure you that is not actually a FireWire, it just looks similar... It's actually a "Component-Out Port". You can go on to any of various Retro Gear Discussion Forum Boards and hear that as a common item being passed on from veteran user/owners to recent new users just learning the ropes with XHA1... That's how I found out how to get mine HDMI'd-outputting.... AND it's CLEAN HDMI too.... which I was half-expecting not to be possible since this is a 2006 device.... but it is

Hi, does someone know if you can reuse mini dv tapes/ dv tapes over and over again like 10-20 times like with hi8 Tapes, because that seems to work very flawless with my sony tr840e ?

I agree that the LCD screen is the (only?) weak point of XHA1. Mine F#$ing snapped off as a matter of F#@king fact... don't miss it though.. I did despite that I have the IQ of a chimpanzee... That LCD sucks... good bye & good riddance .... I don't miss it at all .... I mean, that sucker is beyond bad.... it's got to be on the all-time list as one of the top-10 worst LCD's OF ALL TIME... no joke.
That coax looking port is SDI Out
Explain to me what that is for? I’ve never used a pro camera like this before so there are a lot of new and different features on it
It's not an SDI out. SDI does use BNC connectors but on this camera it's just a simple BNC composite video output.
@@asprinwizardcould you make a device to record from BNC as a tape alternative?
@@bertoliniduce the BNC is just a composite output. The video will be low quality analog standard definition so not really a viable tapeless option for a digital HD camera.
It's actually a locking RCA connector
