Hi. I have mild autism with other hidden disabilities, such as fibromyalgia. I struggle with talking over telephones and video calls so I'm struggling to do appointments over the phone at the moment. And I struggle getting to appointments in person unless I have a carer or family supporting me in person. I'm like some similiar with agoraphobia where I can only go to certain places alone but most of the time I need support to get to places outside of my village. So as you can imagine, I get very lonely and isolated and struggle to access the community. I live alone so I don't get much help at home as well with housework, motivation with hobbies, cooking, etc. I think what I'm struggling at the moment is with extreme isolation and also lack of support and community care resources from the NHS and adult social services. I'm also struggling to get ppl understanding that I have hidden disabilities. For example, my neighbours just assume autism is a mental illness, which it isn't - they don't understand that autism is a neurologicaldevelopmental disorder instead. And one my next door neighbours is a lovely person but he is very over friendly and over affectionate - so he's a pain for overstepping his boundaries with my friendship with him, such as wanting to keep hugging, kissing me, over talking, over jokes and Standing too close to me when he sees me....but as someone sensory issues and autism, I find it nervous to be around him as my sense of humour skills is crap and I don't like ppl hugging me or kissing me or standing too close. But sadly, ppl think because we look "normal" that they can treat us like the average person in the street which is nice to a certain extent and in one way but in another way, it can be frustrating as ppl don't understand that we need things to be done differently. Does this makes sense ?? Take care. Xx 😘

I'm autistic and am about to go to the dentist with my 44 year old son who is petrified of them. As a mum I could not say no to him. I will have to find all my strength to to be brave with and for him. 😳

@@julie8234 I can understand. I had a filling 4 months ago and I am having issues with it now. Earliest appointment I could get is the 17th and I'm so worried I will need a root canal or extraction etc 😔 the dentist is the one I struggle with the most!

I find my experiences are close to yours. Calling people and showing up to appointments. Also in the hospital you have to ask for everything. So if I stay there for a few days I tend to really have to use the bathroom. I'm usually starving and my anxiety is out of control.

For my loved one who is autistic everything about navigating appointments is difficult. Their health care center does everything by phone (live calls and robo call reminders). Side topic but the pharmacy services also operate this way. We've discussed how this set-up may be due to the large number of seniors they service for whom the phone is a standard but for my loved one this is debilitating. Besides all of the hard to describe reasons the phone is difficult for them, they find it hard to document and would prefer e-mails detailing appointments and what is going on. Also, there is the expectation that you can/will call in to follow up and check on things -- rather casually which is something they find it hard to do. In the appointment itself, I think a lot of what the doctor says goes over their head or they aren't processing it in such a way as they are able to respond adequately just then (within the 15 or so minutes allotted). The world is really made for NTs. Good on you to make the Etsy document. Please consider making it a printable as well as something you mail out so that it's purchasable for everyone.
