Funny reading the post of who was the best drummer for JP - Hands down it was Les Binks! Even the band realized that and got Scott Travis for the similar style. But for the Dave Holland haters - Dave was a professional he had his own style and could copy what Les Binks did in the songs that he did. But Dave Holland did not play the same. Dave was a hired pro just like Binks was; but two different drummers. Binks had a bit more in the bag of tricks than Dave.

    • @Kgio-2112

What you tend to find with live recordings of Rob is that in this period he has a more clean perfect youthful voice, could easily have done musical theatre. Whereas in the 80s, discounting the occasions where his voice is rough, no doubt due to his drink/drugs issues, his voice is stronger, more mature but has a more "metal" sound that cuts through and is more aggressive, so more like his trademark sound, yet loses some of the effortless soaring beautiful sound you hear in this recording.

Amazing, professional-quality soundboard recording!! It's very unfortunate that the soundboard version of this particular Japanese show wasn't recorded in its entirety. I would have loved to hear how "Exciter", "Better By You, Better Than Me", "The Ripper" and "Sinner" would have sounded like during the Stained Class tour, in the same full sonic clarity like this live recording of "Genocide."

***** That's terrific!! Unfortunately, I wasn't even born yet at the time when the Priest was in their pre-leather era, when they were revolutionizing and modernizing the heavy metal. Which show for the Judas Priest's Stained Class tour were you at in 1978? And do you recall when their show-opener "Exciter" was played live, was it with Mussorgsky's classical music piece "Great Gate of Kiev" serving as an intro played on tape, or did the band just jumped straight into the song with Les Binks playing the opening drum solo as it was on the original studio version? Many thanks in advance, and I hope you can provide some info, however much you can.

Yes, this song is Tipton's baby and it is equal to Victim Of Changes in that it shows evolution of the band and Glenn as a writer. Both VoC and this appeared on Sad Wings but they also both existed before, '71 and '74 respectively, but both started out significantly different from the versions at the time of this recording. Genocide was originally a 3 and a half minute dud without much energy, it sounds similar to what Glenn did in Flying Hat Band(pre-JP), was trying to be a Doom Metal type song but it evolved into a roaring metal monster thanks to the constant touring and developing the song.

Halford, with his band, performed that song in the Resurrection Tour, more than 10 years ago; but I know he performed it circa 2006

1978... The year of Priest, even though Killing Machine was already a calculated step away from Stained Class' perfection. Sucks that Stained Class' songs didn't stay on the set list for very long. Only Beyond the Realms of Death became a staple, really. At least White Heat Red Hot, Exciter and Stained Class should've survived.

Holy fuck. My head just blew off. I was 8 minutes old when I re-heard that version for the first time. Have the album. Ashamed its dusty . IMO Robs best vocals ever. Great collective performance but imagine those vocals with the original members. Gonna listen to that whole album right now.

I actually had never heard the HALFORD Live Insurrection version, so I previewed it on iTunes & ended up buying the album. It's pretty fucking awesome, but I have to say I prefer the clean vocals (not to mention the guitar work by Tipton & Downing) on the early versions. The original studio recording is (obviously) way too slow, so for me, the best versions will always be the late-70s live performances. Unleashed remains the champ in my books! But thanks or the tip!
