      Huge? I have seen it and it only makes a small loop in downtown Chiraq and from what I have seen it is hardly ridden anymore. Time to tear it out and put in a subway system.

    I remember this well. My first job out of college I had to ride the elevated Orange Line. Whenever it passed by the St. Elsewhere building the theme song went through my head. It went underground a few months later.I was looking forward to the change at the time. On hindsight, I miss it.

    • @DigitalIslandboy
      @DigitalIslandboy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      When they took down the Orange Line they promised to replace it with a subway. The Orange Line was put into the channel created for what was going to be the Southwest Expressway.

    • @magnuschristianssen8999
      @magnuschristianssen8999 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They aren't going to either, most city planners think that "if they'll ride a train, they'll ride a bus too" and WOW are they wrong!!!

    • @DigitalIslandboy
      @DigitalIslandboy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @CrappyDreams No, the Orange Line was put into the cut that was supposed to become the (unbuilt) SouthWest Expressway next to NorthEastern University's campus. Part of the Silver Line (at present) goes down Washington Street towards Dudley where the Orange Line was above ground. They are about a half mile apart. If you look at the south end of Tufts/New England Medical Station you can see the bricked up wall where the OL used to go above ground behind the hospital then go on a former bridge high above the Mass Turnpike down Washington St. to Dudley.

    • @DigitalIslandboy
      @DigitalIslandboy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ARSZLB The Silver Line to/from Dudley does not now go into the tunnel. It starts/stops opposite side of Atlantic Avenue outside South Station on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Essex Street. It also doesn't use electricity on that route before it snakes around towards Downtown Crossing and Boyston Street. The tunnel was never built for that part of the Silver Line because the Hospital on Washington Street complained the tunnel construction was going to be a safety issue for ambulances.

    Elevated lines are still useful and should have a future as well as a past. It's a very foolish decision to want to get rid of them and I hope this trend is soon reversed

    • @cjeam9199
      @cjeam9199 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      eisemanrenyardjake Why? They cause an excessive level of visual and noise pollution and probably more air pollution. The only advantage they have over underground lines is being cheaper and perhaps more accessible.

    • @eisemanrenyardjake
      @eisemanrenyardjake 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Modern L's are all electric; electric trains don't pollute the air. Yes, they're cheaper and more accessible than underground commuter lines and offer great views from the trains. As for noise pollution, newer trains are quieter and no noisier than mainline trains, or road traffic, which is noisier still (and definitely pollutes the air!). Regarding visual pollution, people said the Eiffel Tower was a blight on the Parisian skyline when it was new; now it's one of the city's most beloved attractions. Ditto the London Eye; people said it was an eyesore when it first went up; 5 years later, when its lease with the original operator expired and it was due to come down, opposition was so great that the city's mayor stepped in and saved it due to popular demand. L's are like this too, only many times more useful

    • @cjeam9199
      @cjeam9199 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      eisemanrenyardjake Cheaper, more accessible and views from the trains doesn’t seem like sufficient reason for them to be preferred over underground lines given all those disadvantages too.

    • @eisemanrenyardjake
      @eisemanrenyardjake 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Well, evidence speaks for itself. I live in an area served by an underground commuter line and I prefer Ls. They're also faster to build than underground lines and with new Ls, such as the Docklands Light Railway (or DLR) in the East End of London, it's going from strength to strength. Sure, underground lines have their uses and for me, they've always been part of life, but they're harder to access (especially if they're old) more expensive and take longer to build, don't offer good views (for the most part, anyway) and many people who are claustrophobic can't use them. They're also much noisier (when you're on board) than Ls. It's unclear what, if any, disadvantages Ls have that mainline trains don't. To not want them, you're behaving like an ignorant little child who doesn't want a vaccination from the doctor because the shot will sting (for a short time) even though it's for their own, long-term benefit

      Chicago and NYC are too big to replace all that route. Philly and the others mentioned are small like Boston but they don't invest in their infrastructure because they would have to raise the taxes to do. It even though I miss the old EL, I don't muss the clickity clack, screeching gears, the drunken bums and trash under the EL with the graffiti on Washington street....don't miss it. My grandmother took the orange line from 1950 to 1961 from Dudley to Downtown when she worked at Jirdan Marsh ❤I was 6 when they tore it down in 1990.

    In 1940-42 NYC took down the second ave el. We did not get a replacement subway until 2017. and that is an incomplete section from 63st to 96st. Maybe by 2030 it will be a extend to 125 st but not below 63st. at least Boston built a new Orange line to replace that el.

      Not too far off. Not because of the color, though. The Boston Elevated Railway built the El right in front of Holy Cross Cathedral, and I remember some Catholic friends complaining that the Yankees had wrecked the Catholic cathedral with all that El noise. They shut down the El between someplace and someplace else when Pope John Paul came to town once; don't know if for noise or for security. It was the pre Popemobile days, when he rode standing up in an open car, so I kind of doubt it was for security.

      Green And Orange Line Productions I think blight was a major issue, like it was with the Charlestown El in the 1970s. I don't know that I'd say Roxbury is exactly nice now, but it's vastly improved over what it was thirty years ago, and getting rid of the el noise (and shadows) was part of that. The downside is that the Silver Line is a terrible excuse for a replacement and doesn't go south of Dudley.

    I like how no one in the comments has mentioned the fact that there was snow on the ground and it was the end of April. Is that normal for Boston?

    Even though I live in New York City where we have 40% elevated its still sad to see this happen because it reminds how possible it is to happen here. (Although I think the 1.6 bil a mile price tag protects us)

      They were reliable workhorses but the MBTA worked them for too long. They should have been overhauled but the MBTA decided to wait for the CRRC cars hoping the Hawker Siddelys wouldn't wear out. They did ... one spectacularly! 😢

    There was nothing with els but is easy sometimes ahead to see trains to operate outside is passengers to see outdoor views and the change on the next page is ridiculous the el was valuable structure and that just bits the dust unique structure, renovation and reconstruction must the page for the century too and it’s a shame that is turning out too differently to make underground line!
