  • DIY building/installing a pergola using salvaged lumber
    Total budget: $62.00
    12’ x 9’6” pergola
    Tools used:
Shovel, rock bar, shovel, drill, tape measure, skill saw, saws all, miter saw, wood clamp
    Materials used:
    (4) 6x6x10 for posts - 3 of the posts were salvaged from a
    previous deck project
    (2) 2x8x12 for beams - purchased at Lowe’s
    (2) 2x8x10 for beams - were salvaged from a previous deck project
    (12) 2x8x12 for rafters - were salvaged from a previous deck
    project
    (1) box of 3 ½” screws used everywhere - purchased at Lowe’s
    (8) 6” lag bolts w/ washers (2 bolts per post)
Please contact Blake Hawthorn if you have questions regarding how to square up and determine where to dig holes for posts. Contact info below.
The holes for the 10’ posts were dug to a depth of 24”. Following this, we added 4” of rock mix to firm up the base for the post to rest on. Next, we filled the rest of the hole up with chat-like rock. (this can be purchased at Lowe’s). To assist in holding beams at level we used scrap 2x4’ fastened to the 6x6 posts to hold level.
Once the posts were set, we then added the beam boards. 2 of the beam boards were cut to 12’ and the other 2 were cut to 9’ 6”. These were attached with 3 ½” screws and placed with the base of the beam at 8 feet off the ground. We used a carpenter’s square to check beam boards for square.
Lastly, we used salvage 2x8x11 with 45-degree decorative cuts as our rafter boards for the pergola. A few modifications were made to ensure proper look and size. These were attached also using 3 ½” screws as well.
Next for this backyard is hammock chairs and landscaping. Also possibly constructing a patio under the pergola. Thank you for watching this video on diy/how to make a pergola.

I think this is a good simple, budget-friendly pergola to build for a rental property since there’s no concrete involved. We could just mark all the parts to take it down and then move it but also cheap enough to leave if we don’t want to move it. Thanks!

Always concrete or cement your poles, you'll get way less rot than using loose gravel, loose gravel with a pack bottom will create no drainage for the water, with concrete if you want wood protection all you have to do is treat the wood with a rubber spray or flexall...

If you are not in the city limits and on a well and septic system, be sure you are not doing something like this over the septic system. Also, be aware of where your water line runs to the house.

Great video! I'm planning to build a pergola but would it be okay to build one with regular lumber? Or do I have to use pressure treated wood?
I don't like pressure treated wood as the surface is not attractive and it contains chemical.
Can we paint waterseal or some exterior paint on regular lumber and use it for the pergola?

    • @itshisturf23
      @itshisturf23  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I would recommend a cypress or cedar lumber. If you use non treated lumber you will have to reseal each year. Another option in treated is yellow wood. It's a cleaner lumber.
