No, it's not offensive; what you mean is that YOU found it offensive... big difference.

While there is some truth to the adage that offense is not given; it is only taken, I also think it fair to say that if you calculatedly plan a routine around jokes that a lot of people are likely to take offense at, then that routine can be said to be offensive.. Jimmy Carr is fully aware that people will take offense. Therefore, I think it fair to label such routines as offensive. This does not mean they should be banned or "cancelled", but if we deny that they are offensive, i think that we are being disingenuous.

@@malcolmrowe9003 The flaw in your argument is where you say "... if you calculatedly plan a routine around jokes that a lot of people are likely to take offense at, then that routine can be said to be offensive." There is no logic in that statement. You need to be able to demonstrate that a lot of people will take offence at the jokes. There is no evidence that that is the case, in fact the evidence is to the exact opposite as the audience is there because of the jokes Jimmy tells; so if they were going to be offended by them then they wouldn't have come to the show in the first place. Therefore your assertion that 'a lot of people are likely to take offense' doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

@@malcolmrowe9003 knowing someone is going to take offence is in no way the same as causing offense, especially if fair warning of a controversial subject is going to be referred to. it still takes a someone to take offense which in these situations is a case of self infliction. of course this only applies to advertized public displays, of course personal interactions are the difference here, as that can be a place were actual intentional offence can be given in an attempt to cause mental and emotional anguish on purpose. a large portion of comedic material is based on subjects that others would find some personal inference that they would be offended at but that as stated is not the intention. i would not call these offensive, but could be labeled as just controversial at best. offense is a term that directly implies personal attack not a generic proposition of statements for comedic value. 😉

A priest, a Rabbi and an Iman are walking through the forest when they are seen by a hungry bear. The three can not outrun the bear so they climb a tree. The hungry bear curls up at the base of the tree, salivating with anticipation. The Rabbi tells the others they should all join in prayer and that they should prey to God to make the bear a Christian. So they pray, and they beseech God and to their amazement they watch as the bear gets onto it's knees, then as the bear pushes it's paws together and starts to prey: "Thank you God for the food I am about to receive".

The thing is that some cultures are able to distinguish and compartmentalise humour from genuine insult, so generally speaking one doesn't "take things the wrong way". Naturally there will be differences of opinion in where a line might be drawn between the two, but the grey area between them is regularly investigated. What one can "get away with" moves around from generation to generation.

Not entirely, if a person says something they know will offend it's their own fault because they're the only ones with control over what they say, and you know personal responsibility, someone crying "but meh free speech!" after insulting someone and them getting punched is their own damn fault.
Pushing it onto someone else is the equivalent of a child blaming someone they punched for being in the way of their fist "It's their fault they didn't move away in time, wah wah wah", "It's their fault they were hurt by something i chose to say, i shouldn't have to deal with the consequences of my own actions wah wah wah".

Comedy is oddly a place where people can discuss serious topics that the news, politicians, and others seem to ignore. The Catholic Church and what they did with shuffling priests around so the abuse could keep happening was insane with how they were not held accountable as anyone else would've been. Comedy in a way on such topics has become a part of oral storytelling that will be passed down generations. No matter how much people try and hide the truths within.

Hindus before the British arrived to enjoy a nice cup of tea found that once a married man dies his wife is tied to a stake and burnt alive , not sure if it still happens in villages , but that was the case in them times that the woman was burnt alive .
So the British army went to thoes men who burn the women alive and either hanged them or put them in fornt of a cannon and fired the cannon .
You see religion has its own rules when it cam to give punishment to innocent people , but yet behond walls were up to no good themselves .
You do not need religion to show how you can have morals but at the same time protect your children and give them the skills to be good to others .

He knows about Christianity, so he tells jokes about Christianity. Going after religions that you have to go read up on and then pick holes in isn’t observational comedy. His audience is also largely from a Christian background, so the jokes are easy to follow. So he could go after Zoroastrians and Buddhists, but it may lose the audience.
