I love the trend of making a slasher/horror version of something as soon as it becomes public domain. I really hope it continues. It serves as an interesting way of celebrating the longevity of something while simultaneously creating something that the big corporations who own these characters would never do.
I’m not against the idea of horror versions of these characters but these terrible low effort slashers have got to stop. My first thought for a steamboat Willie horror movie is a version of Mickey inspired by “Cartoon Mouse” to be honest Maybe a movie actually depicting the events of “Steamboat Willie” but Mickey is a “curious” entity that wrecks havoc by acting like a cartoon in real life, brutally mutilating animals and people while making them musical instruments like he does in the short all while acting innocent and in character

There is some sense to it, but it's a slippery slope for a huge company like Disney's favor. Take Kino's cleanups & enhanced arrangements of the movie Metropolis. I'm pretty certain the laws favor the idea that Kino has made a new version of Metropolis and that unique things done with their version are their own copyright and it cannot be legally redistributed. But really, though!? Anyone who would watch and compare almost every version would mistake it for just Metropolis.

There is some sense to it, but it's a slippery slope for a huge company like Disney's favor. Take Kino's cleanups & enhanced arrangements of the movie Metropolis. I'm pretty certain the laws favor the idea that Kino has made a new version of Metropolis and that unique things done with their version are their own copyright and it cannot be legally redistributed. But really, though!? Anyone who would watch and compare almost every version would mistake it for just Metropolis.
