  • Stunt doubles are some of the most vital crew members in movie scenes, yet they don't have their own Oscar category. The stunt coordinator works closely with the director to intricately plot out how stunt sequences weave into the whole film. There have only been two occasions when stunt people have been acknowledged at the Oscars for their work. INSIDER looks into the debate why stunt people don't get Oscars.

      That's really awful but that stunt man knows there's a lot of risk. We all think it wont happen to us but we all sign up for it, talk to our families a dozen times about each gig, and we know we are behind the scenes in a way. I'm very sorry to the person who suffered one of the worst possible scenarios for a stunt actor or anyone to endure. It is terrible and hopefully the whole working community has learned some valuable lessons through talking out what went wrong. Hopefully those lessons will save some lives. I would love for stunt people to be recognized I'm just saying we have always kind of knew we wouldn't considering how important hiding our faces are.

    I don't know why this is even a problem in the first place. These people literally pour their blood, sweat, and tears into *so many* of the most memorable scenes in movies and tv. Not to mention broken bones and other injuries they go through just to make sure the movie/tv show gets what it needs. They go through so much and at the end of it all they don't even get too much acknowledgement for their role besides a mention in the end credits which, honestly, how many people really pay much attention to the end credits besides looking at who played the main and supporting roles. It's not fair that these people who actually do risk life and limb for the stunts they do for many scenes, don't get the credit they deserve. It's well past the time that they get awards for their work that they should have received awards for ages ago.
    They may not be the people with lines in movies, but I'm sure there's more to doing stunts than speeding and drifting in cars and being flung around on wires. Action movies wouldn't be the same without them.

    • @NeilSharks
      @NeilSharks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Sol Ventulus well it’s sad but the fact is that this is an old thinking. Stunt co ordinators are considered servants. They do the dirty work while the actor gets the recognition. This has been going on forever.

    • @agonleed3841
      @agonleed3841 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Noland Ryan it's all in a way...and its old now...but...the idea is to keep up appearances. In the movie, you're expected to indulge yourself. Removing the actor and imposing yourself on them.
      That requires some disbelief as well as the movie actions itself. So just admitting to even having stunt doubles creates another barrier to involving ones self. So giving them a section, putting it all in the air, out in the open...it takes away the smoke and mirrors...the magic of the movie.
      Today, it's a shit excuse. But that IS the idea

    • @agonleed3841
      @agonleed3841 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johnny Anderson yea..,that's the point. To leave SOME magic in.
      And like I said, with all that we know today, it's a shit excuse. But...to be honest, even if you KNOW it's a stuntman, you do It think about it..,because no one actually talks about it.
      Like wrestling. People knew it was fake even back in the 70s. But....the more magic they took out of the performance, the less appealing it became. And now wrestling is struggling.
      Jackie Chan movies are always the best because if it's not American made, it's mostly 100% his own stunts. At all times. The old ninja turtles are remembered forever whereas I guarantee you haven't even thought about the newer ninja turtles as soon as the hype was down.
      People don't like substitutes that much. Cgi or stuntman. It takes them out of the "loop". The imagery.
      Tskemthat away. Acknowledge that too often...then movies no longer has even a little magic.
      It's simple. Stunt men should get hella large pay. Maybe not as much as the face...but damn close. At least half. At least a quarter....quarter seems good.
      And their na,e is in the credits. The after credits should show their faces as stunts are performed..,but bot in the scrolling credit scenes. The after after credits...which they do in dvds. So....the stuntman actually DO get credit.
      They can hold their own awar..in a hotel or such. Or even 3mths AFTER the original awards. Give people enough time to settle down. And forget lol
      A grace period. To keep up the image of the movies

      @@user-garnet that's a lie. If you are a member of the academy you can't get gifts, it's a rule since the 90's. The only thing you can get is a DVD screener of the movie. And the academy has about 10 thousand members. No company will pay 10 thousand trips to anywhere.
      And what about animation? The best movie of the year won this year. Soul is incredible.

    • @TheSonicBros1
      @TheSonicBros1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kassiogomes8498 On animation, sure I liked soul and I'm not upset that they won. But there is so much evidence that the academy just doesn't respect animation as a medium of film. Pixar and Disney have won 14 of the 20 awards that have been given for best Animated Feature. I love Pixar movies but there are so many international films, and smaller indie animated films that the academy just doesn't care about. There are reports of voters admitting to not even watching all the nominations because they only care enough to see whatever their kids want to watch. Dreamworks, Aardman, Ghibli, Sony, and Nickelodeon have only won once. All of them are big Hollywood companies apart from Ghibli who is the only anime company to ever win best animated. And even that, they only won because Disney distributed Spirited Away in America. In conclusion, The academy shows no respect to animation as anything more than silly kids films. And They don't even care enough to watch every nomination.

      I think it breaks the illusion, a recognition of stunt actors is like unveiling a magic trick. An outdated mentality, I mean we all know it happens but if we don't know the names then it doesnt impact the magic of the movie as much. The same could be said for animations, but since they can also be a genre of their own and not just CGIs and effects they have to be recognised.

      Nicolas Rmarca yeah his name was David Holmes and he was just 25 at the time. I’m also surprised they showed Deadpool footage but didn’t bring up the stunt woman who died while filming the second movie. Would have been an easy transition to talk about the injuries and deaths. Actually come to think about it Ben Hurr too, they showed the lead up to a stunt man dying during the chariot race. Like that clip was seconds from his death

    • @jaclyntamura5347

      He only got disabled because one of the machines that they were using for the stunt malfunctioned and it threw him up against a wall. Usually that kind of thing doesn't happen. That is one of the more extreme cases. They can get bruises and broken bones but actors have also gotten those when they were filming too.

    • @MrSpaceRaptor
      @MrSpaceRaptor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      This is a weird line of thinking, you make it sound like one of the most vital parts of filmmaking (Editing) is less worthy than Stunts? Or even just on the same level? Cause it ain't even close, many films have been made without stunts, barely any (I can only think of 1 atm) have been made without Editing. The editing room is where a film truly comes together. Sound is extremely important as well to any film since the silent era ended.
      For the record I completely agree that stunt work needs to be recognised, just disagree with drawing equivalency with these aspects. Why not Visual Effects? I'd consider that as being similar to Stunt Work because it's more specific to certain types of films (usually action/sci-fi/fantasy). Both deserve to have categories, sadly one doesn't.

  • @rbkstudios2923
    @rbkstudios2923 6 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    There should be no argument about this...of course they should get awards...and not only that... they should also get some public recognition

    • @razmitora2214
      @razmitora2214 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a perfectly good argument against it. You start giving awards for stunts, and the tendency that rules the Oscars is "go big, or go home". Awarding stunt crew would thus encourage them to try and do more and more dangerous stunts in a field where plenty people die and get injured enough as it is. Doing awards for stunt people is in fact a terrible idea.

    • @SpaghettiToaster
      @SpaghettiToaster 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Razmi Tora Why would that be the case? This would only happen of the jury for some reason decided that more dangerous stunts equal better stunts. But that would be an idiotic simplification. Stunts should be evaluated by their aesthetic merits, the dramatic impact of the scene,the quality of the choreography or coordination, intricacy and ingenuity of the sets or machines and other techniques involved involved and indeed the precautions and planning that went into creating the stunt safely. Reckless stunts should obviously not be rewarded by the jury,and if they aren't, I don't see the issue with the category.

    • @razmitora2214
      @razmitora2214 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Acting like the danger of the stunt being performed doesn't play into its merit is ridiculous. Look at the chinese stunt crew scene. Look at Jackie Chan, who got famous purely by doing stunts that put him at significant risk for injury and death.
      All of those things you mentioned are amplified with the danger these stuntmen put themselves through. The audience is very adept at sensing false danger from CG bullshit or wired actors flying around the scene. The stunts that resonate with the audience the most are the ones that very clearly put the actors in some sort of dangerous bind.
      And given that the academy is NOT a merit awarding but a popularity awarding one, well it's obvious that what I said would stand true.

    • @SpaghettiToaster
      @SpaghettiToaster 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Razmi Tora How exactly is that? Does the academy poll the public or read online reviews to determine the nominees and winners? Because if not, then if idk what you mean by "popularity awarding" and it seems to me that the academy jurors have full discretion over the bases of assessment. If they say "we're not awarding any stunts that put the stuntmen is unreasonable danger", that's what's gonna happen,and indeed, this would provide an incentive for safer stunts in movies as opposed to now where dangerous stunts are more desirable because of "popularity". Also, I disagree that dangerous stunts are more exciting. I believe for every truly dangerous stunt,you could createbthe exact same stut with a visually identical result in a safer fashion by spending more money and using more elaborate trickery. This is exactly what sir Oscars would and should promote.

    • @razmitora2214
      @razmitora2214 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right now there isn't even an award incentive to do dangerous stunts and a few stuntmen still die or suffer permanent injury every year. There is no way to make things safer than they are now, they're already trying their best to mitigate danger. It's just danger is inherent in their work.
      If you add a reward incentive to it, it will make things more dangerous. There is no way to discourage stunts where the stuntmen are in unreasonable danger because every stunt has some amount of unreasonable danger to it. That's why they're stuntmen. The most impressive stunts, when done successfully, are the most dangerous ones because the more dangerous the stunt the more behind the scenes work is required to make sure everything goes smoothly.
      The Oscars is always a popularity contest. There are over 7000 voters. 97% of them will be uninformed on the ins and outs of stunt work. They will only hear very surface level information about the most popular stunts done of each year, and will be attracted to the most dangerous ones. It is inevitable. You can disagree, but you'd also be giving the voting body of the academy too much credit.

    Practically all the stunts that are done in films and Television are things I will never do. You will never make me jump off a building and don't the creativity of the stunt coordinator. Give them an award!

      Tom Cruise only does some of his stunts. But he only does the ones that are not as dangerous. Now Jackie Chan on the other hand.

      Panic!Athetwentyøneimagine chemicalARMY flying a helicopter, jumbling outside of freaking flying helicopters, jumping from buildings to buildings, keeping your breath under water for 6 minutes, doing your own driving, freaking sticking out of flying airplane, etc, etc, etc...are you freaking kidding me? These are all highly dangerous lol, and Tom Cruise did all of them, hell he nearly got killed in The Last Samurai. I know it's not Jackie Chan level of badass, but it's still quite badass.

    I believe our stunt community deserve to be acknowledged and recognized because they are the ones along side with our favorites actors and actresses that bring a good entertainment in our lives. Needless to say we sometimes lose some of them in the midst of a film production. I believe that stunt people should receive an Oscar for sure.

    Ashamed to say I'd never considered this, but YES - most definitely these are skilled specialists who deserve Oscar recognition! Besides, that'd be one category where you'd really enjoy watching the nomination clips!
