OHMYGOD HEY!
In this video I'm discussing the new musical KATHY & STELLA SOLVE A MURDER which I first saw at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2022.
The show stars Bronté Barbé and Rebekah Hinds as best friends and true crime podcast hosts Kathy and Stella who find themselves unexpectedly embroiled in a real life murder.
Check out my thoughts on this latest iteration of the show, its new supporting cast and its murderous material...

This show gave me my new favourite musical lyric! "She's the only one who understands you." "She's the only one who can actually stand you." Gold!
Ohmygod I was chatting to the person sitting next to me at today’s Mean Girls matinee, talking about shows to see, and she mentioned this one which hadn’t been on my radar. I’ll definitely check it out on my current visit to London.
Interesting you mention comedy book vs lyrics: I found Tina Fey’s book had some absolute zingers today (as did the direction and acting) but I don’t recall laughing at any of the lyrics... Anyway I can’t wait for your review of Mean Girls once it opens properly next week 👍
Went to the 2nd preview (the night after your live show) and I had a absolutely blast. The performances from all the cast were amazing (you really believe in Kathy & Stella friendship and you root for them throughout, I totally agree with your thoughts on Imelda performance in the 2nd act she was so good). I was sat in the stalls near the entrance door which is used by one of the characters in the 2nd act (which caused me to jump out of my skin 😆). The songs are catchy. If you enjoyed Only Murders in the Building then you will enjoy this show. Great fun night out at the theatre. Thanks for the recommendation (went to it based on your previous review of the show).
This is my absolute favourite thing in the west end right now. I followed it from Edi and it deserves every success it’s getting. The characters feel so real and never before have I seen so much of myself in characters on a stage. Imo kathy and stella is an absolute must-see!!
Thank you for the spoiler alert. I’m booked for August and looking forward to it and happy not knowing. Great review as always ..
Saw this at Home in Manchester last October and was laughing throughout. Nailed it as a description with it being in the style of Victoria Wood, the cadence of the dialogue and the comic spacing was excellent. Glad to see the majority of the company are carrying on the chemistry between the leads was so key to the story and I really felt for the push/pull of the friendship choices they were making. The songs were incredibly catchy and I was humming the main tune for months afterwards.
I loved this last year at the Fringe and I'm excited to see it in London next week!
I feel like I have to disagree with the point about the placing of the flashback. If it was at the Q&A, it surely would endear themselves to each other more as they reminisce? Meaning the tension between them would probably be assuaged somewhat.
The flashback being an aside at the start of Act 2 works well for me in welcoming us back into the world of the musical, providing more context to the characters we’ve been endeared to. It makes us root for their relationship still while allowing them to build the friction.
I agree! Staging it that way would really break up the flow of Read About A Murder! Not to mention the logistical nightmare flip-flopping between all of the costume and set changes would be were it staged that way!
I saw this at the Fringe in 2023 and really enjoyed it. The leads were great but the character switching ensemble was my favorite part.
Thanks. Sounds like a fun night at the theater. Any thoughts on a future transfer to New York for either off-Broadway or Broadway?
I found it a fun, enjoyable show. I have that catchy podcast song in my head though not sure if I would listen to the whole album on repeat. Would definitely like a repeat viewing in the future if it comes back and adore the accents. The 2 leads were fabulous.
Booked for August during a 13 show stay in London and am looking forward to it
I saw the show this weekend, and quite enjoyed it. Probably not enough to go again though. The cast were all very talented and high energy, but the sound balance was a bit weird where we were sitting so it was hard to follow along with all the lyrics and we probably missed some jokes/plot points. I also think that one of the central bits of tension between Kathy and Stella (in their personal lives, not solving the murder) had such an obvious technological solution that it barely even counted as drama!
It's playing opposite The Mousetrap? That's hilarious and perfect!
We saw the show this evening and we had a great time it was so funny
I saw the show the 31st of may and enjoyed it a lot. I really lived the humor and the staging was great. The person next to me left during the interval. I think it might be a bit difficult for international audiences to maybe get some of the jokes. I would also give it 4 Stars. I wouldn't necessarily listen to the songs on their own.
I saw it early in previews. It was fun, but inconsequential. I haven’t thought about it once since that night. It felt more like an episode of some anarchic 80s Britcom than a real musical.
The way things are heading these blab-fests, sorry, reviews, will end up being longer than the show itself.
Never mind the length, feel the excitement.
