I cannot agree more. People always like to trash on opera saying stuff like "it's just a bunch of people screaming" (someone actually said that to me when i told them i was going to see an opera) but it's so much more than that. turandot in itself is a story about classes, love, lust, loneliness, trust, unfulfilled desires and victory. It's about the human soul, a shameles common crowd not minding the fact someone just commited suicide in front of them, the shame you can feel just for someone loving you and you not being able to say that back, and at the end not being afraid of being open in front of others. And that's just one opera, the world of opera has so much more to offer, especially puccini

Yes! Leona Mitchell sings the role of Liu unlike any other soprano I've ever heard! Ironically later in her career, she sang the role of Turandot in over 50 performances most notably at the Australian Opera in Sydney.
Leona Mitchell is one the best Sopranos of her generation. Her Liu, Butterfly, Michaela, Elvira in Ernani, Tosca, and Elisabetta in Don Carlos just to name a few are unmatched.
A true heart breaking performance of Liu to beat all others. And the voice is exquisite and the technique also All those floating high notes... And the pathos. I also posted that her "Signore ascolta" is sublime. Too bad they did not show the whole scene starting with Domingo singing "Nessum Dorma" to the end of the opera! I own the complete opera with this cast and love it. Domingo and Marton are terrific. But to me, the performance from Leona Mitchell as Liu is supreme!
Liu's last aria from Turandot Puccini's last opus. So sentimental and nostalgic...yet so lovely and beautiful. Parla, parla il nome. Liu won`t reveal the Price`s name, as she promised, a true heroine.
