  • A UK Nuclear Weapons' Convoy coming down the A817 onto the A814, just up from HMNB Clyde, en route to RNAD Coulport at the other side of the Rosneath Peninsula, in Argyll & Bute, Scotland - with material brought from AWE Burghfield, Berkshire, England - on the afternoon of 17th May, 2023. This Convoy was very spread out - and was unusually preceeded by a marked RAF breakdown vehicle in operation (not shown on the video). This was later confirmed to be carrying an unmarked police vehicle. The Convoy is usually preceeded by a police vehicle, not a breakdown truck. The two breakdown trucks usually come down together with the 2 relief crew coasches at the very end (often after police have opened the roundabout again to other traffic; and they have moved on In this instance they were also spread out, and the second breakdown truck came along some time afterwards). got caught in the middle of one of these some years ago.... Just past the Dunglas Roundabout on A82 at Milton they were in the inside lane of the dual carriageway & I was in the outside passing them when suddenly they signalled right & moved out en-mass & I was in the middle of them. Police m/c outriders stopped the traffic at the Milton lights & we were waived straight through... ditto Garshake rd lights, ditto Barloan rd about. They pulled into the inside on the bypass & I finished passing them. Quite fun. Surprised I wasn't huckled.

Best driving of the lot, not pick up all the debris that accumulate (nails screws etc) in the unused area of the road. I'm a bit surprised they did it that way for the convoy, a bit less speed in what is quite a secure area, and reduce the risk by using the "clean" road.
I'd rather not have an extra 15 minutes with the scrutineers wanting to see every inch of the tyres thank you (ADR / explosive - not nuclear driving past).

This is amazing , such a fascinating puzzle to ponder what was in each vehicle. At first I was amazed at the quantity of police personnel transporters thinking crikey, that is a lot of people. But then two full sized coaches came along!
What exactly is all this manpower for?
I assume the police transporters contain armed police to protect the convoy.
What is in these trucks exactly ? Nuclear weapons?
What people are in these two coaches, what is their role?

The risk of someone who might actually have an interest and capacity to do something about it, knowing some HGV that looked like it was going to Tesco had a nuclear warhead on the back instead of your weekly shop is the stuff of cheap B-movies. Thankfully we move our warheads professionally with some serious protection, by people who know what they are doing, and not someone who plucks ideas from the clouds

Trident delivery vehicles are usually crated and shipped to the US straight from the dock on Loch Long without fanfare. Or if one of the bombers is on training they'll sail to the Trident facility in Georgia with the empty missiles onboard to swap them out.

No need to put 16 tubes onto boat with no knowledge how many actual missiles are loaded as in Polaris days. If going to States to test fire I don't know if they sail with a blank onboard or if there's a Royal Navy missile in the states to pick up. We sailed with missile loaded at Coulport to fire at Cape Canaveral. No idea what Georgia has in relation to runs ashore. But we had 2 weeks leave whilst in Florida.
