Deep Litter System for Poultry Waste Management

  • Here's my version of the 'deep litter' system for managing poultry waste. It uses a 1-foot deep box filled with wood chips placed under the roosts to absorb the droppings. For just a few birds I turn the chips when they look dirty, and for lots of birds they would be turned daily. After one year, it is changed.

    You just solved my problems. I am out there cleaning for at least 2 hours a day, I have Quail, Chickens, Turkey, Ducks, all but the Quail are PT free-range but they spend a LOT of time in the coop so it's a constant battle to keep it clean and I have a brand new building that needs to be set up inside and this is the route I'm going. I buy bags of Pine shavings but I do own a small wood chipper and I'm wanting to start making my own shavings or at least buy them from the Amish guys down the road by the truckload to cut expenses. Thank you for covering this! VERY helpful.

    Ya we like deep litter here then remove it and compost for the gardens
    Its nice having a good look at how its devided neat way to use all your space :)
