The Rose Tulips are my fave. I also love my Clover Amour.
I painted black acrylic paint into the Clover numbers then wiped it off, leaving it in the recessed area. Much easier to identify now.
I’m teaching my 10 year old granddaughter to crochet. I gave her a Clover Amour 5.0 mm to start out. I don’t want her to get discouraged with an inferior hook.

My favorite hook to use is Susan Bates, the inline of the hook is great for beginners, the hook stays the same size through it does not taper like other hooks, easier to pull the yarn through. I have used Susan Bates for over 50 years, so I guess that is why they are my favorite I started crocheting with them, if I had started with the other hook would probably like them better. Thank you for showing all the other hooks.

What a clever little adaptation you made to your crochet hook pouch at around the 27:45 mark. Unpicking the thread on the elastic dividers to turn two smaller hook holders into one larger elastic for the oversized hooks to fit comfortably. Thanks for sharing!

I watched this video several yrs ago. I found the clover hooks on sale and on Amazon (thinking if I didn’t like them I’d give to my mom who also crochet). The first time I crocheted w a clover hook ...I was in L. O. V. E !! The glide through the yarn us amazing and makes a HUGE difference in fatigue...even the larger plastic hooks glide like butter!! When I crochet it’s usually for 8-12 hrs, so not having that drag makes a huge difference !!!!

I don't personally love the Clover Armour but Clover Soft Touch are my absolute favorite hook! I hate that they don't have them in a larger size range. I hate doing larger projects because they don't have them past like size J I believe.

My squeaky uncomfortable collection of grotty, yarn splitting hooks were donated to an op shop. Agree with Prym. Th ergo handle is a combination of soft/grippy and hard plastic so easy on the hand but durable. The plastic hook has a texture that holds the yarn well but works fast. The head is tapered with a long neck; I don’t care for inline heads.

  • @cmartin836

I just LOVE this tutorial. When I started crocheting I bought the inexpensive Boye and Bates hooks and realized how much I did not care for them . Every now and then they work good for a project I'm on, but I am a Clover Hook lover. I also love the plastic hooks and even plastic knitting needles. You just sold me on the larger Clover hooks and I will eventually purchase them individually. This was really helpful because now I don't have to try all these different brands. My hands never cramp up with the Clovers and I hold my hook the same way you do. Thanks Christa!!

One of these days ill try the clover,, mainly because people rave about them so much!. But I really like inline heads, like Susan Bates aluminum ( the crystalite ones are as well, but plastic and that squeak makes my skin crawl) I always liked tapered heads before, but I find I split yarn less, and have more even stitches with inline Bates. I bought a set of bamboo hooks, also inline, but haven't really given them a good try yet.
Your right about the light ups, I bought one, and seem to stare at the light. Ill have to try again to see if I can get used to it.
Good review of hooks, thanks :)

I'm with you. Susan Bates are the only hooks I use for non-lace weight yarns. I love how they hold the yarn (throat depth). My mother taught me to crochet with Susan Bates hooks. I've tried Boye hooks, but they just aren't as good. Most of the hooks in this video don't look anything like Susan Bates hooks. I lovingly call myself a hook snob. 😁

Who is not sleeping at nights, but doesnt want to leave the best spot to knit/ crochet ,which is your comfy bed and doesnt want to wake up your partner, the best thing is neck light. Bought from Amazon Glocusent reading light and I am very happy with it. 3 brightness settings,3 different light colours, main usb charger,so no mess with batteries changing. Also you can adjust light position and it stays with no problems. For a darker yarns you can use with lite hooks and feel very comfortable when crocheting in the dark.

Definitely gonna order somw clover hooks to try. I LOVE my light up hooks, you can crochet anywhere with them. And I've learned when they start to squeak if you wipe them with a cloth they will stop squeaking. Thanks for the review and info, can't wait to try the clover hooks!

I started crocheting with a Susan Bates hook, then found Boye hooks and dropped the Bates. Moved on to an ergonomic cheap hook that wasn't helpful. Then...I got a set of Tulips for a gift and fell hard. I love the Tulip's. I ordered the Clover's after your review and wish I had gotten the Clovers first, just saying, I find the fit is perfect for me. The perfect marriage of hook and yarn.

I agree with you on the different hooks and I especially agree with the light up hooks they are great for black yarn! I had stopped using black yarn until I got them now I can use black yarn or any really dark yarn and not need an alternative light source or my glasses(and the glasses did always help).

I've seen tons of videos on crochet hooks and they mostly talk about the ergonomics of the different hooks but nothing about how smoothly the yarn slides of these hooks. I bought an old vintage UK crochet made of steel by a company named Bernat Aero and Viking Aero. Not sure what type of coating was used on these hooks but the yarn glides off of these hooks effortlessly and super smooth. I've been searching the web like crazy trying to find these hooks or something similar with no luck.

    • @tamaraj4200
      @tamaraj4200 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Aero is a budget brand that bargin stores sell. I have a few as well and they work ok. The coating is just a simple plastic coating.

Hey Christa, thanks for the information on hooks. I didn't realize that there are so many different types, guess I've been under a rock. I do have Clover hooks, but they are called Soft Touch which I use most of the time -- they glide well thru the yarn, however, I haven't found a hook that I like yet for cotton #4 weight. I was thinking when you were filming in the closet, wouldn't it be funny if Dad came and ask the kids "where's Mom" and they answer, "oh she's in the closet crocheting." I purchased on Amazon a Beam n Read which is wonderful for crocheting dark colored yarns even if I'm not in the closet. ha ha

I purchased a set of light-up hooks for a friend and a set for myself. My friend uses them all the time because she likes the handles; I’m afraid the hooks will snap so I haven’t used them much.
The Edge-It hooks come two in a set; the sharp one is for punching through fabric, and the other is for crocheting after the foundation row has been completed. My hands get abused when I make edgings, but I love having a bit of lace on a kitchen towel or cloth for baby.
I have a set of Knit Picks ergonomic hooks that I love. At $10 for 9 hooks, it’s pretty reasonable. I have the Clover Amour steel hooks, but I only use the 2 biggest hooks in that set. The smaller ones are ideal for crocheting with sewing thread, so if I ever pick that hobby up, I’m good.
I have one Furls knock-off. It is fun to use but I have to twist it an unusual way. I mostly just use it when I want to feel like a Queen, not when I’m trying to make progress.

I'm with your students on the tulips! Not only are they slightly more smooth than the amour hooks but the thumb rest is EVERYTHING! LOL
The colors are cute in the amour set (I have a set) and I keep them as a backup (they are collecting dust) for a project where I need to crochet more tightly (they have more tapered, smaller heads, I think).
But my thumb starts cramping after awhile with the clovers because, without the lowered position for the thumb, it isn't as natural/ergonomic a position for the hand.
But I have the tulip rose set, plus a mini set and some individual hooks (plus now a gray set too) and I ADORE pink (and the case is GORGEOUS!). I'd rather have pink ombre than miscellaneous colors (although those looks cute sitting in my jar). The rose set does use different shades of pink for the different sizes. But they are well marked so I don't worry about that. Meanwhile, the super pricey furls hooks have practically illegible markings.
I DO love the larger (7mm and up) clover amour hooks. That's all I will use (until that glorious, blessed day when tulip makes larger hooks) for large hooks.
But after long crochet hooks I still notice the difference with those awful flat sections on the clover handle. It's all about the thumb dent.
Tulip doesn't even know that I am their unofficial brand rep. LOL
I've converted my two best crochet buddies to tulip (and large clover amour) and they won't use anything else (like me). I've converted many other people as well.
I think the only ones, so far, who haven't gone on to love them were long-time Bates users who are used to that extremely deep cut in the hook.

I have seen these on Amazon now for about five years now and always wanted to get a "G" or "H" since I use these sizes most often....But I had to stop working in 2012 to care for my ill husband full time and had more time to crochet..however due to repetitive use of my fingers from work I have an awful dose of "trigger finger" in my middle right hand finger. It "locks" up in a semi closed state and I have to manually open it into a normal position. It may seem like a minor thing but it is a hindrance to so many things to do with everyday life, and surgery is possible to help but just not a priority at present.I do think just getting one or two ergonomic hooks would make things less taxing and I plan to get at least one asap.I do have a tip (from my dear mother in law who was my patient crochet mentor!)...Starting out in the mid 70's learning all we had were aluminum or steel hooks and the way the acrylic yarns bristled and "grated" on the metal always made me cringe. She suggested I keep a small bag filled with cornstarch in a container to use to regularly dust over my palms and on the aluminum hook lightly as needed for smooth movement and easy slide, which helps your speed too.Not so much that it gums on your work either though, but it will wash away.Im looking forward to enjoying my crochet and solving these hurdles! Thanks!

Great review. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I normally use either Susan Bates or Boye but I do have a Clover Amour hook that I love. I think it’s a Q. I plan on getting more of those. I’m not crazy about the ergonomical ones. I’ve been crocheting off and on for over 50 years so I’m used to my metal hooks. I would like to get one that lights up so I can crochet in the car! With regard to Furls I’ve never used them and wouldn’t spend the money. Way too expensive for my taste. That being said, the sky’s the limit when it comes to my Knitting needles. Well within reason lol. I am much pickier with Knitting needles. I have no trouble with my metal crochet hooks so except for the Amour that’s what I use although I have a couple with the ergonomic handle. I bought them when I didn’t want or need to buy a whole set. Thanks for the tip about buying the Clover Amour separately!

I really like the Amour hooks, just because my hands sweat a little when I crochet so the bare aluminum hooks slide around in my hands a lot after working for a while. It got bad enough that I would switch the hand I held the hook in every half hour or so to give the other a break.
