I just exercised the "Know when to say no" rule. I played the new Taylor 722ce KOA on Sunday at my local shop (Parkway Music) and the specific instrument I played has an amazing blonde streak on the top. Visually stunning, but an all-KOA guitar is just a bit too bright for me. A great, player-friendly guitar that would have looked great in my collection but I probably wouldn't play it that much. Still tough to walk away from for sure.

Awesome video man! There's a couple of additional tips I've adopted after years of experiencing the boom and bust of guitar collecting:
First, it is far more painful to lament over the great piece of gear you had to sell than is it is to lament over a piece of gear you failed to buy. Moral of the story, when you buy, buy for keeps. It's more cost effective and there's less emotional pain that way.
Second, measure twice and cut one. In other words, "TRY NOT TO SETTLE!!!" If at all possible buy what you genuinely want the first time. If you want a Gibson Les Paul Standard, don't settle for the Epiphone LP (which is an fantastic guitar btw) and then spend 6 months trying to convince yourself it's better than the Gibson (You never will), before selling it and upgrading to an Eastman LP copy, and then finally the Gibson. I've done this before and wasted soooo much cash in the process. Most important about this tip, when you buy what you genuinely want the first time, you are less likely to get antsy to upgrade your guitar. For example, through the years I've gotten antsy to upgrade a few months after purchasing numerous semi-hollow bodied electrics from Epiphone, Guild, and Gretsch. However, after finally purchasing my Gibson ES 345 (Dream Guitar) I find it difficult to get antsy because what the hell else is out there to upgrade to? It is true that you can typically always spend more money on gear, but try to buy the piece of gear that brings you to the brink of the law of diminishing returns and that threshold is different for every guitar player.

So far, the best guitars I've had actually _started_ off with me not quite liking it and then loving it, and on the opposite end the ones I like most right off are the ones I ended up not liking after a couple of weeks.

This is true. I gotten in a bit of a loop of me ordering guitars and sending them back quickly if I didn't like them during my search for new acoustics. But on a few occassions I made the "mistake" of buying one that I couldn't return and I felt sad that I was stuck with that guitar now. But it was in those cases, when I kept them long enough for them to adjust to me and for me to adjust to them, that I ended up really liking them

I’m down to 3. Had 14 at one point, but they were all cheap ones. Now I get nice ones $2-4K but I keep it simple. Meaning I think it’s more important to see what I can get out of the guitar when playing. In other words, practice more on a nice guitar to settle into it.

  • @leftwrite

My thoughts on "too many guitars". For me it has become more simple as I've grown older and more educated about guitars. In terms of acoustic guitars, and I mean high end, high quality instruments whether vintage, new, or boutique, for me it comes down to this: these types of guitars have to played regularly for good periods of time to bring out their full magnificence. If you have a large collection and are actually living a life that has obligations, you just can't do it. These guitars should be played and they deserved to be played. If you don't, you're not treating these fine instruments with the respect they deserve. I think having a smaller collection and playing them regularly makes all of the difference. You can really get to know them and they can live up to their full potential. Plus the money you save makes it more affordable to change strings on a regular basis. Another plus. Anyway, my 2 cents for what it's worth.

My most recent attack of itchiness happened back in February, and I now have a guitar I paid too much for that doesn't suit it's intended purpose. I had arthritis so bad in my left thumb that I wanted to get a short scale acoustic for the reduced string tension. I went to Carter Vintage on my birthday, Feb 25th, to look at a Martin custom shop 00, but ended up not really liking it. I thought "well, Gibson's are short scale"... I had intended to trade my Goodall Standard, but they would only take it on consignment. I got so caught up in wanting to get a guitar for my birthday that I went ahead and bought a 2016 Gibson Custom Shop Advanced Jumbo Flame Maple. Oops- not having played Gibson acoustics in years, and not having done my homework, I didn't realize AJ's aren't short scale! Duh! It's a great guitar, but not what I really needed. So, of course I "had" to buy a J-45 last month because I got a great deal on a cherry one at Sweetwater. Now trying to sell the AJ, but not getting any bites. :) I also ended up trading the Goodall for a Bourgeois 000 Country Boy which is short scale, and man is it awesome! Anybody want to buy a Gibson AJ? 😂😂🤣🤣😂😂

After 55 years of playing and swapping out a bunch of guitars, I went with the “low / no maintenance” acoustic collection… Sold three nice wood guitars, two Japanese Takamines, and a USA built Ovation,(only the back is lyracord). Bought a RainSong carbon fiber Jumbo for my main stage guitar. Then added a Gretsch metal Honey Dipper, my first resonator. Somewhere in the near future, will add a carbon fiber 12 string,(RainSong or Emerald), and call it all good. Added to my cheap Yamaha bass that gets occasional calls to duty, and I am done. Just going to play now….

Learned to play, badly 🤣, on it and to this day I'm amazed at the high string tension it has. I a friend's D-18 and it's SO much easier to play.

Man, pretty spot-on advice. I was watching Hoarders a couple of months ago and it's helped in my mindset of refining my collection (and my life). Seven years ago, I had more disposable income and Christmas bonuses so I was really impulsive with my guitar collecting, and ended up with a lot of mid-tier stuff; within the past year, I've kind of faced the fact that I only really reach for three guitars, and they're the nice ones. So, I've been working on clearing the collection and using the money for more meaningful things in my gear collection.

All good things here. I went from a heavy commission based music store job to a factory job. I had to sell some things along the way as well. I own a bunch of guitars right now. That being said, I’ve got Guitars that do different things, but no direct duplicates. If it’s the same shape, it’s definitely different composition. At varying price points, but nothing so inexpensive that it requires continuous maintenance. The itchy part is something that is difficult to keep at bay. I’ve gone back and forth with selling or keeping something. I make a list, and figure out why I loved the instrument when I bought it, and why I don’t love it anymore. I’ve walked away from great guitars in a store or guitar show. I’ve also sold great guitars in exchange for something less than.

I’ve gone through this over the last few years. Not because of money issues but because I get ‘itchy’. I went from about 15 down to about 8 now. Total I went through over the last few years was about 40 because the deals made sense. Luckily I’ve only had a couple I regret. I would get stressed out a lot about getting enough time to play each one. Much less stressful now. I usually only play my ‘69 tele and ‘70 00-18 now. Almost cost me my marriage but I’m getting over the itch phase I hope. I HAVE to stop looking, haha.

I sold a bunch and I'm down to 6 - 1990 P-Bass 1958 reissue, 2004 American Deluxe Tele in Beautiful Candy Tangerine, 1994 Beard Dobro, and my trio of small Jumbo acoustics - Martin J-40, Gibson J-185 reissue 1952, and Collings C-100. I have a Lowden which I use for certain songs and alternate tunings. I'm still looking for a main guitar for standard tuning to replace my maton messiah (probably a boucher or collings). I'd also like to add a tele as I miss my tele I used to have and a baritone acoustic. That would make my total guitar count 4. That would cover anything I'd like to do on guitars.

Casino...the love of my life in guitar world...it's never being sold but I am purging guitars as well. Many will become presents for grandkids. I'll keep my Martin though it's not an expensive one. I'm also keeping my ES335...I've never been a huge gear head ...played the same 5 Boss pedals for 40 years and still use an old DOD 680 analog delay I bought new in 1979...I have 4 small amps...a 5 watt tube amp..a Fender Champ..A Vox 30 watt...and a Fishman acoustic I run the Vox and Fender in stereo from my analog delay. good to go. My philosophy is sell it before it breaks and most of the stuff will break eventually. If you don't play it...move it on I say. In my younger gigging days I had two guitars..an Ovation elite and a black a gold Les Paul...I could move in a taxi...now I have land and room and have been here over 20 years in the same place...it's grown like crazy...At the peak I probably had a dozen guitars but really I only need about 5 for my recording needs.

I just had my first know when to say know on 3 in a row. The last two included a Taylor that was perfect in every way except it sounded nothing like I expected given the rosewood back and sides and spruce top construction. I mean not a scratch and everything looked right and I could have flipped it for a nice profit but I kept thinking about how disappointed the buyer would have been after spending thousands on this klunker even though it would have been delivered exactly as advertised in perfect like new condition. The second was an HD28 that was priced lower than market but not so low I thought I could make that much on it. I was actually afraid I would fall in love with it and keep it when I’m in flip mode as I’ve always wanted one. The guy that was selling it was so rude and literally on the way to see it I just got this feeling not to buy it so I cancelled the showing and laid low. It is ebb and flow and you really do need stay tuned into your intuition…I literally pray about these decisions and listen for the answer. I take my time and so far it a slow side biz growing but it’s profitable and my customers are happy.

I just semi-impulse bought a Guild M-20 (been looking for a little while) on reverb that I was super excited about. Desperately needed a setup and had a bit of bridge lift when it got here but couldn’t get it in to a luthier to get a quote until after the return period.. should have walked away and sent it back as soon as I opened it but for some reason I just couldn’t bring myself to do it… now I’m regretfully waiting for it to get back from the luthier 😩. Should be good, but sucks to be at a loss like that. Definitely need to be more careful moving forward. And probably won’t buy anything online from a non-reputable private seller again unless I can play it in person first.

All great tips Jeremy BUT no fun. My advice is 1) make sure your income is secure (ie unl;ess you are really gifted then best to do something other than music for your main job - even for the really great it's a real crapshoot income wise) 2) income insurance exists!! buy it!! 3) Never trade in or buy new if possible - many years ago I got such pathetic trade in allowances I swore I'd never trade in again and I've kept to that for 50+ guitars since. Used stuff turns up usually 50% cheaper than new a month after everyone else has decided they don't want it. 4) buy with your ears and fingers NOT a brand name - doing this for example allowed me to do things like scoop up used Guilds before they became really expensive 5) let your idol play his choice but see if there is not a cheaper knockoff/copy that sounds as good to you - I have a epipoop 56 goldtop tribute and 1275 doubleneck that sound great to my ears and are considerably less than the Gibsons they copy. Do these and you will end up with a house full of guitars and a wife who moans at you for having so many - but it will be great. Finally, If you must sell anything then sell your amps and pedals FIRST - you can usually find replacements later. Cheers!

If you can't play all your guitars in the course of a week, maybe you might consider why you have so many? Are they an investment? In which case, can you keep them humidified properly? Are the acoustics tuned down a whole tone to prevent the necks from needing reset (dovetail necks especially). If you have to, can you sell at fair prices, not at half price to a retail store or pawn shop? I just stopped myself this past year once I had a classical, a dread, a 000, and a couple of electrics. Past that, I will need more space to justify them as playable investments. From here on in, I will probably have to swap to get anything new.

My main rule: I do not own any guitars with the same wood combinations - all are different. I love collecting high end guitar's.
Guitar's that I hope to flip and make a little money on.
I have a d42. Mate you got to hang on to it. It looks nice in the video. Suits you.
How old is she, what kind of price was it.
I'm addicted to buying guitars. Money doesn't last long in my pocket. Just bought 3 Taylors
Xxx-mc, 914ce L7 Brazilian , and a ps14 ce sinker redwood and macassar ebony. Broke my bank balance. Around 12 guitars at the moment. 🎸❤️🎸
    Great fun though.

I managed to get mine new for £4700. Good deal from shop because I spent big on 2 furch guitars. 2018, 2019 limited editions. Got them for a good price. Sold one on and made £400.
I like flippin guitar's, better interest rates than bank's.

You have a business Jeremy yet you hoard your product? LOL. I'm 74 and was in business for 40+ years, the first lesson to learn is NEVER FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR PRODUCT. Yea I know, but this is different. No it isn't. It's fine to have a few you want to play, but you look like you are sitting in a music store display center while making this video...yet you say this is your collection. You are a hoarder Jeremy! LOL. The way you make money is buy low and sell high and not fall in love with the product. Just says...but do as you wish, it's your life and wallet.
