    Hi Guy and 'G'day' from Western Australia - I'm Toby and we met at the Albany ANZAC museum. I'm a huge fan and I just want to thank you for your authority, breadth of experience, commitment to serve all of us with your incredible knowledge and your wonderful screen/production skills. Your delight in your subject holds all your other skills together. See you again one day, warm regards to R,
    Toby

    So glad to hear from you again Guy. Please could you do more of these? The Time Team was fine but your expertise on all things Roman were given short shrift in my opinion. Thank you for this very interesting programme.

    I remember watching that Time Team episode :) I binge-watched Time Team while ill once. It really lifted my spirits. Good memories :)

    I'm from York but now live in the Netherlands. Seeing familiar looking roman ruins in Lincoln has made me very homesick indeed :(

    As an American who will not, unfortunately, get a chance to walk Roman Lincoln, this is really appreciated. Thanks for the tour!

      I hope you can get over. Lincoln is a real hidden gem everyone knows York and Bath but Lincoln gets overlooked and consequently is fairly free of tourists.

    Love seeing where 'functional ruins' have been blended into modern structures or, as with the North Gate/Newport Arch, where they retain their original purpose to some extent. Thank you for taking the time to show us this! (Very much enjoyed seeing the info signs, too.)

    What a Christmas treat! Thanks for taking the time to film in Lincoln. Always enjoy your content and will look for the inscription from the Time team dig the next time I’m in England.

    It really is fascinating to know that you can walk down the road and find standing (but still used) Roman ruins. I do wonder just how many other towns and cities have standing remains in the UK. However, thanks for sharing this - very interesting!

    Interesting this. Thank you for the tour. I've recently become more interested in Roman Britain. I got myself an Ordinance Survey map of Roman Britain, It's quite good, as I didn't really have a sense of how many forts, roads, etc there were. Also, I have recently got myself a copy of your book 'Roman Britain A New History' .. A couple of chapters in, really good so far. (I originally knew of you from Time Team.. I was looking for some books on Roman Britain online, and thought I would see if you had written any.. I can see now that you have written a number of books!).

    That tombstone in the wall of the tower is a big !HA! moment for me. Talk about reusing stones. Did they really build with a graveyard marker??? Amazing.. to their defense.. I guess it was a man from 1000 years before right?

    Does anyone have any ideas as to HOW the Mint Wall has survived?? To think that this stretch of wall was already about 700 years old when William the Conqueror came to Lincoln is mind blowing!! Everything else is buried, or part of the city defenses, but just how has that basilica remnant survived?????

    • @docastrov9013
      @docastrov9013 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is an upper part to Lincoln and a lower part. Perhaps the top part was just abandoned and the lower part on the river was occupied in the Dark Ages? Strange how the walls weren't robbed for building the cathedral or castle perhaps there was just so much they didn't need the Mint Wall.
