    As a longtime Sharks fan since the old Cow Palace days the "low point" for me was the 92/93 season where they only won 11 games and lost 71 games, that was truly tough to watch but at the same time I was able to see my first Sharks game with my dad against the original Winnipeg Jets at the Cow Palace. I agree that last season was pretty tough to watch and as a former season ticket holder in the late 90's to early 00's I did not see a game in person for the 1st time in a longtime last year. I know that this is probably going to be another tough season but as we saw with that 3 goals in 5 minutes against Las Vegas on Saturday there is always hope that the Sharks are better than we really think. Great analysis as always Professor!!!!!!! Go Sharks!

    Last season might have been depressing but it was weirdly enjoyable to join your channel and root not even for wins, but just for the opportunity to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and see the Sharks become respectable again. Looking at your board, they certainly appear to have taken a step in the right direction.

    Winnipeg jets fan coming in peace. It's a bit scary that Celebrini and Smith aren't going to be sheltered by anyone higher in the lineup. That said I think your rebuild is going very very well. Anything over 20 wins and less than 50 losses would be a success. The next step is getting Askarov in the lineup as your starting goalie without him getting shelled.

    Appreciate so much your deep analysis on Sharks preseason games and everything else. Haven´t followed Sharks this close in years.
    Sadly predicting another tough season. I feel that non of the young bright prospects are ready to carry their role. "Lunds" had fine season but can they repeat it now when their role may be reduced somewhat. The additions aren´t that great and the place holders like Goodrow, G, Smith co. does not really move the needle.
    In my heart I wish that they atleast in theory would fight for the playoff spot far in the season. But realisticly looking the name on boards this may be another last place finish.

    @Tdesparza วันที่ผ่านมา

    For me, a successful season looks like Smith + Celebrini looking comfortable in the big club, producing offensively and showing the framework for a good defensive game (relative to their age/experience), guys like Askarov, Muk, Cags, Thompson, Bysted, etc getting opportunities to come up and then playing well, and finally being much more difficult to beat as a team. Wins/losses are basically meaningless still but not finishing last would be nice. I would also like to see them play spoiler to teams trying to get in.

  • @GrahamSlam
    @GrahamSlam วันที่ผ่านมา

    Yeah I'm kind of expecting 10 to 15 points better than last year which will probably still be bad enough for last place. Another top 3 pick wouldn't hurt though.

  • @prosperfireson
    @prosperfireson 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Hey Professor,
    Yeah, I agree that the expectation for this team this year should not be too over-amped. I agree that generally the quality of play should be significantly better and it should be noticeable most nights. The X-factor in this season (as with all teams really) is the luck or unluck when it comes to the injury bug. We don't have a ton of skill on this team so if we suffer key injuries to this team that cause significant amounts of games missed that will be difficult for this team to contend with I suspect.
    If we have a "normal" amount of NHL adversity this year I suspect it is reasonable to expect this team to land about where you mentioned in the mid 60's points wise. An incredible season with guys exceeding expectations and a below normal amount of NHL adversity we might be able to reach the 70 pt. plateau which would be a wildly successful campaign I think for this year.
    I will disagree on the defensive corps though. I think I know what you meant. We don't have any names in this years roster that excite much but, I think you are forgetting how undermanned we were last year. We had about half the games or more where we had guys like Vlassic and that other dude I can't even remember his name that we signed for some offense who just struggled the whole year.
    On top of this we were relying on a rookie who was pretty up and down last year and a veteran who was also really up and down in Ruta. The defensive corp last year was really just unstable in a word. I think we are not going to set the NHL on fire this year but, this group looks much more stable if not spectacular. Yeah, I won't hold my breath to see much in the way of offense from this group but, if they can be solid in the defensive zone and be effective in moving the puck out of the zone that really would be vast improvement over last years D corp and I think that is a reasonable expectation for this year's Defensive corps.
    The X factor for the D corp this year is Shakir. I really liked what I saw from his brief stint with the Sharks last season and I think its reasonable to expect we will see him become a regular member of the D corp after the trade deadline if not before. At that point it really depends on what he is able to do because from what I saw from him last year in his brief stint he has skills I don't think any of these other D-men on our roster have and if he exceeds expectations that would dramatically improve our D corps.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I think what we ended up seeing from the defense last year was even worse than it should have been due to injury. Both Benning and Emberson missed massive chunks of the season, which forced players like Vlasic and Okhotiuk into the lineup. So perhaps, with a healthy d corps, it will seem like a larger jump in play like you say.

    • @prosperfireson
      @prosperfireson 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@professorhockey I still can't recall that dude we brought in for some offense from the back end that struggled so hard last year and I forgot about Okhotiuk. I actually liked Okhotiuk. He was just so young and getting burned by every rookie mistake. Mike Rathje went through that. He was a high first round pick and a huge guy and we were so bad at the time that he made the team at 19 and just got mauled. There is a really interesting interview with Mike Rathje on another show that I have never seen before. The interview is kind of long but, Mike talks at length about what it was like for him with the Sharks and how hard it was for him.

    I think the lines are actually reflect of the direction the NHL is going. It’s expected now to have at least 3 solid lines where you used to be able to get away with 2.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Yup, some of those early Sharks team especially were victimized precisely because they only had 2 scoring lines. In 2010 against the Blackhawks in the western conference finals, one major difference was that Chicago’s third line that could actually score. Same situation in 2016 against the Penguins in the finals.

  • @ponyboy9765

    I would really love to see a Smith / Guschin pair up because I feel like they would be dynamic as hell, even if it’s just on the power play. I’m sure it’ll take a few weeks for the line combos to kinda settle so we’ll see. Also Kostin has kinda grown on me. I’d rather see him in the lineup over guys like Grunstrum and Givanni smith.
    Definitely trying to keep my expectations tempered as we go into the season, but even if we don’t improve much statistically I can almost guarantee. The games are gonna be far more enjoyable to watch.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I think there is a really good chance Smith and Gushchin are on the second power play unit together.

  • @donganem8135
    @donganem8135 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Great job, Professor- as usual. I agree that your calls for the lines are likely - and reasonable. I worry that Will Smith might have trouble this year and that putting him on a wing might be better for him, at least at the start. He is SO talented that I have no doubt about his long term prospects, and there's no shame in not rushing things, even if it were to mean a short AHL stint.. [Look at Lafreniere in NY- too much was expected of him too quickly; I suspect he might have rounded into form with less pain had he had less put on him early]. Re the bottom six, I'll say only that I think Kostin deserves to be rated higher than Grundstrom based on their preseason performance, and that Givani Smith should be made to disappear....Overall, the prospects for more scoring and a better power play seem decent.
    to me, the Achilles heel of this team continues to be the D-corps. This is a group of 2 second pair and 4 third-pair guys, and their presesaon play hasn't shown much improvement over last year - D zone turnovers, poor breakouts, etc. Walman is the only genuine upgrade, and this group needs a lot more than that....which , ultimately, may have to come from the maturation of Cagnoni and Mukhamedullin....and Dickinson some years later

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I do rate Kostin higher than Grundstrom, but I don’t think Warsofsky does is the thing. But yeah, the D corps is clearly the big weakness that will hold back any other upgrades made most likely.

    I would like to see Wennberg as the 2C and Smith as the 3C using your same wingers. Smith can get PP time to augment his 15-17 ES minutes. Wennberg could do PK and ES minutes. Takes pressure off Smith as I think he'll take longer to acclimate to NHL than Celebrini.
    I think once Granlund and Ceci are moved at the Trade Deadline, it will open up that top 6 winger/center spot. If Gushchin can impress up to that point, he might earn that spot.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I don’t think Warsofsky would want to play Gushchin and Smith together on the same line right now

      @idthejc วันที่ผ่านมา

      @professorhockey Think they'd get pushed around too much?

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I think coaches are very averse to having two rookies on the same line usually. Getting pushed around is one reason, but also defensively, the “little details” that Warsofsky talks about.

    • @idthejc
      @idthejc วันที่ผ่านมา

      @professorhockey I dislike the logic of not putting them together JUST because they're both rookies. I think putting the best four lines together possible is what's best. I think that Gushchin and Smith would be like Perrault and Smith. Especially if you have Kunin to dive behind the net to recover pucks and stand in front of the crease like against Vegas in the preseason game.
      Then you can have Gushchin and Smith running interference to intercept the zone exit passes from the pressured D. An example is the 6th goal against Vegas when Gushchin lifted the stick and took away the zone exit pass. I completely understand your point, but my counterpoint is what are we trying to protect? We're a 47-point team that should be willing to try some different and unique lines to find an identity and what works for THIS roster. Not a blanket, non- descript identity that is applied universally regardless of the roster composition.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I agree with you on that. There are many idiosyncrasies that NHL coaches have that I personally disagree with, especially in a “throwaway” season like this one for the Sharks. But unfortunately, they don’t see it that way.

    I have no problem with Smith on the roster playing once in a while, as long he isn't taking regular playing time from any of the players who need to develop. I wonder if Grier is worried about protecting at all the young players from getting pushed around which is why Kunin, Goodrow, Smith, and several tougher defenseman are all on the roster simultaneously. Not saying I love this approach but I guess I can see it when you have two teenagers debuting in key roles at the same time

    • @professorhockey

    1st line should be Celebrini Granlund, Toffoli. to give Celebrini experience on a NHL potent sniper line, not making him the center, but letting him work his way in to it now and again... 2nd line needs to be a checking/scoring Swedish speaking line: Eklund, Wennberg, Zetterlund. 3rd line is a Ricci-grinderz vetsmith line: Smith, Kunin, Goodrow!!! 4th line is a thumper/hitman line, that opposing team hate to see come over the boards: Strum, Hanson-1, Hanson-2.... Goalie: when we hit last place....... bring up Askarov!!!! заблокируй это дерьмо, Yaroslav!!!!! play him 2 games out of 5...... if he can, заблокируй это дерьмо!!!! play him the rest of the way.....

      Toffoli's not a fast player, he's more of a stand-by-the-net and score type of guy. Having a purely fast line would be great, but maybe a more balanced line could be better for Celebrini's development.
