    Early-mid 90’s. Salem, Oregon. Summertime show. Outdoors. There to see Robert Plant. In the parking lot: drinking, smoking, “preparing” for the show. The opening act kept playing song after song. Was pissing us off. More drink, more smoke. Never saw a single song of their set. Arrived for Robert. The opening act? The Black Crowes. God, the 90’s were fun!

    Those guys were so damn good and in a time that did not favour their style. What they did was amazing in my opinion. The live footage speaks for itself. One of the very best American bands ever.

    wow on all these haters....CRB freaking rocks - just caught them live...mind blowing. ...seriously, do yourself a favor and check them out ....the Black Crowes were great, but it ran its course...let it go and enjoy the next 20 years of kick ass music. Ask yourself too, if you have a lick of creativity in you, would you want to be doing the same thing night after night for 20 years? Rock on Robinson brothers....both of ya...however you need to get it done!

      I tried man. Chris just doesn't have the heaviness Black Crowes had with Gormans drumming and Robinsons riffs and that's what matters to me. He's a phenomenal singer. But I don't think it's all that different than when Robert Plant went solo in the 80's, it just lacks oomf and great songs (only Plant DID suck vocally after). Does anyone care about Scott Stapp outside of Creed? I don't even know the name of Liam Gallagher's band. A singer without truly great songwriting is no better than every pop tart in the world trying to get famous.
      For Crowes and Zeppelin. You have to have a heavy drummer and great riffs. Neither are there for CRB.
      It's a tale as old as bands. Singer leaves because he thinks he can write songs just as well, and the music suffers, and no one cares. Sting is about the only exception because he was a singer AND songwriter. But? His shit doesn't rock the same. What's missing? That special drummer.
      Singer, Songwriting, Drums. If they're all good you have every truly great band you can think of. Take one away and the house of cards crumbles.

    Loved Black Crowes in every way. From him stopping music for a incident in Toronto Canad, saying he felt like making love to his singing and interruption not appreciated. To renting a bus with all my friends. Bless you Mr Robinson. Baby here I am...

    @Dorian_sapiens 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I'm completely stunned to hear him say the Black Crowes didn't give him joy. How does a person perform so soulfully and so masterfully unless he's taken up in bliss?
    Could he be suffering from depression and viewing the past through gray-colored glasses?

      There's a storyteller session from 1996 where he talks about the anxiety he suffered through a lot of the previous tours. Listening to his lyrics one can see he was a bit of a troubled person emotionally. It feels as if outside the BC he's able to move on from that early era of his life. He sounds really chilled now

    • @Dorian_sapiens
      @Dorian_sapiens 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know, I never inferred that from his lyrics. It's there, you're right, I just figured most people (artist-types, especially) have emotionally troubled experiences to draw from. But that could explain it. I'll see if I can find and watch that session. And whatever keeps him grounded and happy is a good thing.
      Thanks for your reply!

      Because he's a liar and bitter.

    • @chrisfrench8006
      @chrisfrench8006 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He may be bitter, but take it from a touring musician, he experienced things no one on the outside of that band will ever fully understand. We all experience things about the bands we’re in that wouldn’t be understood by people not in the band. They all have the right to be bitter about what they experienced if that’s how they feel about it. However, I gotta agree more with the first two people. It shows in his writing and drug use that it wasn’t all fun and games. Sounds more like the bitter one called himself out in these comments. You either really feel the need to live so much so in your own past that you expect others to stay in theirs simply to satisfy you, or you were never a fan to begin with, meaning you’re just trolling around TH-cam projecting your own misery into other people’s conversations for attention. So which is it? Don’t get me wrong, If you were a fan, I understand the frustration that comes with realizing a band you like will never release anything ever again. But so much so you’re willing to put yourself out there with no internal knowledge as to what really happened there, so much so that you’d resort to calling the guys involved names? Just seems a little ignorant to me. I’m sure none of the Black Crowes were completely innocent.

    Dang, a lot of hate on Chris here. Shoot just ask any 50 year old if they are the same person they were at 20. And if you're 20, you won't be close to the same person you are at 50. Crowes were great yeah, but the energies got exhausted. At some point, you just need to make moves or stay in stale hell. Once you have to force a relationship, everything in and out of that relationship suffers.

    There`s one thing I like about Chris, what you see is what you get. He seems very honest and not full of shit, and as front man, he would be very hard to follow. The Black Crowes "owned" modern rhythm and blues, and it was in a large part Chris as front man....

  • @w0bbl3r
    @w0bbl3r 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    All the people talking about Chris and his ego, you have to remember that all the best rock frontmen had ego. You need ego to be such a great frontman, especially live.
    Just because it makes him a bit of a douchebag in real life, without that ego the crowes would not be the great band they are (or were).

    I can understand why he said he had some joyless times. Rich liked to play LOUD. Anyone who has sung live will tell you that (especially before in-ear monitors) it's very hard to compete with loud guitars unless you have excellent monitors. Even then it's not foolproof. Being a metal kid in the 80's I moved towards playing mellower southern rock that was more dynamic simply because it was more fun to play live. I can see that same progression with CRB. It's only natural to some degree. They are much more dynamic where the Crowes very pretty up in your face most of the time. That said I miss the Crowes very badly. None of the CRB songs move me like the Crowes did.

    It was OASIS. They toured together when the Crowes released LIONS...and they called the tour "Brotherly Love". Good call Bro. Have you seen the VH1 Behind the Music on Oasis? Umm...Hilarious. One of the Brothers said he was sick and couldnt play, so the other performed by himself "WOnderwall" while the sick brother waterboarded himself with whisky in the balcony and heckled him. ON CAMERA! Anyway, Mr. Chris Robinson...is from outerspace people. The most interesting thing he does is write and perform music...that is why we know who he is. i became a professional musician because I saw the crowes perform in Chicago on the Southern Harmony and Musical Companion tour...and I had grown up playing various instruments, but the Crowes had a Conga Player that Tour...used him on Amorica too...and put that together with what Chris believes about music and Rock and Roll being the Remedy and...wellyou just cant help it. I thought his comments about how it helped him through 20 years of his life when he was just a 16 year old freak in Atlanta to now were very prudent. I will also say, that I am now 50...and...I think I am pretty good looking...and I have also experimented and lived a hard life playing live and working hard and playing hard...but ...all things considered....I am delighted he is alive. No one should come to this forum after you just watched the video of him perform and say ..."this is your mind on drugs...or detox...or whatever...) his second x wife is on weight watchers with Oprah. As he would say "Less Judgement, More Tolerence" Merry Christmas...and Celine...sorry I responded to your thread with this...The other band was Oasis. Hysterical

I love CRB too and I'd rather he do that than go through the motions with the Crowes. I don't like seeing the dirty laundry in public. I was in Atlanta at that time, but sadly didn't learn of them in those super early days. Though not long after that I discovered them by hearing Chris and Rich's first interview on 96 Rock where they played "Twice As Hard" and "Jealous Again" off the album and talked about it. My mind was blown and I became an instant fan and bought the cd immediately (followed by the cassette, then eventually the record).

It was he who demanded Rich give up his share of the band and made Steve Gorman, an original member of the band for 28 years, just a paid employee. His greed broke up the band.

    I love Chris! You should mind your own business. I think the brothers love each other, but just can't stand being around each other. They each have very strong personalities and opinions that are never the same. Except for the music, I have 2 brothers just like them. They love each other and hate each other at the same time.

    Nothing stays the same - do we really want the crows to just be stagnant robots sure it sucks that they aren't together making more memorable tunes but if they can't then just dig crb and magpie salute and be grateful for the remedy ☮️

    And as even Keith said, it's not the money, it's...
    "What else are we gonna do?"
    Drinking yourself to death is popular, buying fast toys... Bono tried racing his bikey in Central Park, look how that went. Bono Sr. tried ski racing on the kiddy slope, squel-cha-cha.

      If Gorman, who remained loyal even while toeing the company line for years, comes and calls you out, Chris is the liar. Yes.

    I think most of these commenters have never been in an original band and begin to understand the inability to be around certain people who think they are better than the others... especially when they are absolutely not. I don't know the story behind these guys but I can tell that it wasn't good. Some folks just don't know how it is in a situation like that. They only know about the music that is presented to us and that's it.
