Diana sings this song beautifully, and with a great deal of feeling. It's precisely the beauty of her voice, mated with the great lyrics & melody that make this such a powerful performance, like looking at a beautiful sunset when you don't want to be alone. The beauty makes the pain that much more palpable.
The Glamorous and Beauty of Diana Ross is simple breathtaking. She’s our skinny girl with the velvetysmooth voice. Her Rendditions of those songs are just hers and her singing. No person sounds the same. Everyone is unique! Give her All due respect she opened doors for a many black women. Sing Ms Ross!!!
You're right,Debby, wonderful describes Diana's performance. Unfortunately, most younger people, in general, don't appreciate the greatness of these singers and the beautiful music that they sing.Hopefully, there are enough people out there to keep this music alive!
I Love you when you was in the movie Lady Sing the Blues Ms.Diana Ross Legend you are with an banging amazing voice you did your thing Diana Ross, Billy D Williams yell played thar movie very well I thank yell for a song sound full of old school jazz,Blues,I adore you both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Big Huggies!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fabulous rendition of a beautiful song, I had the honor of going to one of Diana Ross's concerts in the early 80's in Houston. She was fabulous and her outfit changes were out of this world. These are the songs all from days gone by, standards, and sung by many artists, all of them great in there all unique styles from Billy to Gloria Estefan, they all came from diverse backgrounds and to try and compare them against one another is not fair to them and this beautiful song. They are legends.
my GOD this is just incredible !! I've always loved Diana Ross before, but, hearing her sings this brings me to tears it's just so beautiful and poignant! Thank you Ms Ross and thanks to the person that posted it.. great job to both!
I'm not ususally a fan of this type of music, but I could listen Diana Ross sing this others in the same vein endlessly on repeat; she was almost made to sing these songs along with the songs for which she's mostly know. Beautiful! ❤❤
enjoy hearing Diana Ross singing this song versus Holliday; her instrumentals also add some beautiful back up, and her voice is just so beautiful, I never get tired of listening to this song, especial on Monday, bring it on, " sit down "
A masterful performance of difficult material that is made to look easy only by considerable musicianship (I mean, have you seen those chords?). Love you Diana! x
I absolutely agree with you. The one standout scene for me in Lady Sings the Blues was Ross in the bathroom, on the floor, shooting up. She's in an absolute state of frenzy! That sequence was more dramatic, more powerful, and so well-acted, it's the basis for my saying Ross was the superior actress that year. Nothing Liza Minelli did matched that. And for sure nothing Halle Berry did in Monster's Ball even comes close.
AMEN!! Diana was ripped off!!!! It was 1972, what could we expect?? They weren't going to give a best actress Oscar to a black woman no matter how brilliant. Liza...don't get me started on Liza. She is a poor imitation of her mother and in no way deserved to win that award. Diana owned that movie. She was amazing. I know a bit about Heroin addiction. Diana could not have done it any better. Its a crime she got ripped off. Sorry for the rant, I'm just a little passionate about this Have been since early 1973 when those Oscars were awarded. Criminal!!!.
Just heard Gloria Estefan sing it, sorry nothing like this. She can't light a candle to Ms. Ross... I am a late "50's" baby and I LOVE & APPRICATE the greatness of this type of music!!! To bob g- you are so right!!!
@janbrown51 I'm touched by what you had said. I'm 37 years old and I have heard that same story so many times from other elders 40 on up.. The current generation is nothing like the past. Its not sociable and close knit how it use to be.
Someone in the comments below said Ms. Ross can't sing... I guess selling 100 million records worldwide is a fluke huh? Ross has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, when her releases with the Supremes and as a solo artist are tallied. In 1988, Ross was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as member of the Supremes, alongside Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. PS. I always thought her jazz renditions were simply marvelous.
On this day in 1972 the Billie Holiday bio movie "Lady Sings The Blues" had its world premier... Diana Ross, who portrayed Billie Holiday, was nominated for an Academy Award for 'Best Actress' {winner Liza Minnelli for 'Cabaret'}... "Good Morning Heartache" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 on January 13th, 1973; eventually it peaked at #34 and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... The song was originally recorded by Billie Holiday in 1946 and appeared on her 1956 album 'Lady Sings The Blues'...
i went to see lady sings the blues 30 times.no lie this was before cable and dvds. my sister said if my brother in law and i was together she would not have been able to watch the movie.he was a devout richard pryor fan and i was a devout diana ross fan.i guess she was right.
@qbear17 Yes...thank you. I wish people can just listen and enjoy the music and appreciate that the song was WORTHY to be covered and covered well by several artists. Enjoy this version for the qualities IT has. Diana puts it down on this. I wish she'd do another jazz album.
@janbrown51 OMG, jan, that is so beautiful! that is my life...it WAS my life, in NYC...the "river" was Los Angeles...it was so nice and beautiful that I stayed at the river, but my past life was just like you said. Thank you...
Even though this didn't chart high as a single, what it did was make people go out and by the soundtrack! Which is why the LSTB soundtrack flew to the top. Still her version of this stands with any done.
It was a close call that year. Liza Minelli won the Oscar for Cabaret. A hell of a performance, but she came up a bit short compared to Diana's in my opinion. They weren't ready for a black best actress back then. She would've been the first . . . before Halle.
On this day in 1972 (Oct 12th} the musical bio-movie ‘Lady Sings the Blues' had its world premiere in New York City... Diana Ross received an Academy Award 'Best Actress' nomination {winner was Liza Minnelli for 'Cabaret'}... "Good Morning Heartache", sung by Diana Ross, was featured in the film; and three months later on January 7th, 1973 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #98, nine weeks later on March 11th, 1973 it peaked at #34 {for 1 week} and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #8 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart... One other song from the movie also made the Top 100 chart; Bobby Darin's covered version of "Happy" {the film's love theme} entered the chart on December 31st, 1972 and on its 8th and last week on the Top 100 it peaked at #67...
Yes, Liza did win that year and my point is her performance in Cabaret was nowhere near as challenging, or dramatic, as Diana's. But Liza got that award because she was White (Hollywood was not yet ready to hand out "Best Actress" to a Black woman) and, just as important, she was Judy Garland's daughter, to boot! It's not always about recognizing the best "talent" for the Hollywood awards.
This interpretation of "Good Morning Heartache," which was clearly NOT the version Diana Ross recorded for her impersonation of Billie Holliday in "Lady Sings The Blues," was what Ms. Ross called a "stolen moment."
Goodmorning heartache You all gloomy sight Goodmorning heartache Thought we said goodbye last night I tossed and turned Until it seemed you had gone But here you are with the dawn Wish I'd forget you But you're here to stay It seems I met you When my love went away Now every day I start by Saying to you Goodmorning heartache, what's new? Stop haunting me now Can't shake you no how Just leave me alone I've got those monday blues Straight through sunday blues Goodmorning heartache Here we go again Goodmorning heartache You're the one who knew me well Might as well get used to you Hangin' around Goodmorning heartache Sit down
Great version, Great singer and I am a Great fan of Diane Ross. My all time favourite is Billy Holiday and Diane a close 2nd.. Would have loved to hear Billy sing some Tamla Motown,,,Imagine that!
@Rockin2222 Their talents are completely different from each other. They're both beautiful in their own styles. I suppose, with Billie and this song you can really feel the pain, the hurt. You try getting Billie to sing Aint No Mountain High Enough. It probably won't work. I like this version, but I think Billie's is WAY better. She gives you so much more meat.
somnoar why you didn't share the complete record of Diana with Count Basie Ochestra? I only have it on a Laser Disc, so please do so... thanks in advance . Saludos desde México.
why must it always be a comparison/competition. Can people no longer appreciate anything for itself? This is a lovely version of this song. Period. Billie's version is beautiful. Period. Contrary to popular belief, we are not a panel of judges on a TV talent show.
+Floyd J. You should check out Natalie Cole's version. Its really hard to choose between this one and Ms Coles. The first time I her this song it was song by Natalie Cole, so i'm a little partial to her version lol. But Diana Ross really singing this song.
Absolutely!
She was cheated out of the Academy Award for Best Actress that year.
Diana sings this song beautifully, and with a great deal of feeling.
It's precisely the beauty of her voice, mated with the great lyrics & melody that make this such a powerful performance, like looking at a beautiful sunset when you don't want to be alone. The beauty makes the pain that much more palpable.

Orfalinda Sanchez true
Used to open several segments of my very early morning radio show with this. Oh that was decades ago. Memories...
This song reminds me of the movie Billie Holiday she played that role so well. Don't forget the handsome and sexy Billie D. Williams. ❤
Just beautiful.
Diana Ross should have received and Oscar for her role in the movie Lady Sings the Blues.

Miss Ross really owns that stage!

I felt that Diana's performance was much stronger than Halle Berry's in "Monster's Ball" which did win the Oscar for best actress.

Goodmorning heartache

But here you are with the dawn

Now every day I start by

but her voice is prettier than both
I believe the winner was Liza Minelli in "Cabaret" . . . . .
Por favor si alguien tiene la letra de esta canción, pero en Ingles. Gracias

Hey, lassley, maybe janbrown51 MEANT Billy Dee. Hit #34 in Billboard. God bless!
