    Great video, I'd like to point out something new skaven players may not realize. The verminlord's dreaded spells are not the same spells as the lore of ruin versions. so you can kinda cast the same spell twice, one of my favorites is take a deciever and a grey seer. you dreaded skitterleap the grey seer. cast a high damage endless spell, then have the grey seer use regular skitterleap to safety.

    Oh man I had like 10k + points of skaven before the sfiends were around. Long time ago...
    So many p monks and s vermin. Like 10 rat ogres (I liked them)
    When I get back into this I'm gonna retro mod all the new models to make em look like my old ones. V lord,. B ripper, s bell etc..
    Thanks bud for the trip down memory lane

    I have about 10k of Skaven and play at least once a week. There's one unit that doesn't get much love that I now bring to every game. The humble Deathmaster. This guy is pure Skaven cheekiness. I make mine Stubborn as a Rhinox. I usually put him in a unit of Night Runners that can make a pre-game move, usually onto an objective. With 2d6 + 3" when the Deathmaster pops out, you're averaging 10", which will get you onto an objective in any battleplan. You pop the Deathmaster out and you can get a once-per-game steal some points from your opponent. Always warn your opponent you have this ability. I said once-per-game, but in most of my recent games, he doesn't die. A deathmaster usually isn't the juiciest target they want to fight in combat. Again, warn your opponent you can scurry away, then scurry away. Now you're in position for an easy battle tactic and/or assassinating an enemy hero next turn. If you didn't take a Deceiver, you can give him the Deceiver's favourite artefact, the Shadow Magnet Trinket to scurry away all game and be the most annoying little bastard in existence. You can also take three of them, put them in a warlord/command entourage, and still take a one-drop. As per the FAQ, hidden units don't count as drops for the purposes of deployment, so you can actually take a warlord battalion and put that inside a one-drop army. A lot of armies want to maximise their Galletian Champions and grab extra artefacts, eschewing the one-drop. With 3 Deathmasters, you can have your cake and eat it too. Cunning Manoeuvre is the gimme battle tactic of this season, and you have the ability to screw that up for them all over the board.

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Shadow Magnet Trinket + Deathmaster is a solid combo, I just never find enough points to squeeze him in my lists!

    Great video! Love the models and passion for the faction. The Great Horned Rat approves

  • @Fernly52
    @Fernly52 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One thing to note with the deciever is that it has a trait and artifact that can make up for a lot of the weaknesses of the unit and a skaven list as a whole. The shadow master trait can be used to completely shut off enemy shooting units if positioned well as they won’t be able to shoot him at all and won’t be able to shoot out of combat at anything else. And coupled with the shadow magnet trinket and verminlords actually being able to scurry away he can pick and choose fights and get himself out of most situations with up to 3 potential combats with fight first. If you don’t care about drops and take a warlord battalion for extra spells known you can get flaming weapon and levitate to further increase both his offense and defensive capabilities.

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Shadow Magnet Trinket rules, but I think Devious Adversary on the Warbringer is just too good to pass up when it comes to Command Traits (I'd bring both Verminlords together). Flaming Weapon is also super important to both of them, just forgot to mention that in there!

    Great job on the video! Would love to see Start Playing videos discussing subfactions that don't have Starter boxsets such as the different varieties of Slaves to Darkness (Darkoath army?), Kruleboyz, etc., some of the subfactions look cool but it's hard to figure out if it is possible to make a real army with them/what models you would have to pick up without buying a battletome.

      Skaven are on the tricky end when it comes to playing at the top level; a lot of the units are pretty frail and have bad bravery to boot so you really have to position things carefully and play a very measured game. I'm currently building a clan skryre list, and I am putting a couple of doomwheels and a doom flayer. What is your personal opinion on them?

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  ปีที่แล้ว

      If I was running a couple Doomwheels I would try to put in Masterclan Heroes to unlock 3 Clawsteps. What that does is give you the opportunity to do D3 mortals when you move, D3 mortals when you charge, D3 mortals when you pile-in using 3 Clawsteps, and then another D3 mortals when you pile-in on your normal activation. It's a little tricky to get them in situations where they won't die in combat, but if you can pull it off it feels great. I'm not a huge fan of the Doom-flayer, cool model, but you really need to do More-More Whirling Death to make them do anything and when you use that, on average, your unit is destroyed in the process.

  • @PetrichorPlays
    @PetrichorPlays ปีที่แล้ว

    You cannot use a reroll for 3 clawsteps. It’s the first unmodified roll, a reroll would be the same instance of rolling but not the first unmodified roll.

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Incorrect, this is how it works:
      1. You make your first charge and don't like the result.
      2. You re-roll that charge roll, you aren't modifying it.
      3. You use that charge roll for your first charge and can use it for the rest of your army; you just don't get to add any modifiers like the Rat Ogors +3 from being whipped (which is what people were doing when the book dropped and why they added the FAQ/notes about it).

    • @PetrichorPlays
      @PetrichorPlays ปีที่แล้ว

      @@warpfireminis ur 100% on this? cuz that changes a lot....
      anyway not saying anything in the book is crap. I think there is just so much to test... its fortunate thanquol and verminlords and warp lightning cannons etc got the light first. But I think there are a ton of competent midrange options that use none of that. But for the record, never knocked thanquol. Verminlords are meh.
      Censer bearers r lowkey some of the best dps in the game per points and rat ogors are amazing too, either of those units r more streamlined value than verminlords.

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PetrichorPlays 100%, I've run it by multiple TO's as well; you're rerolling your first charge roll, not making an entirely new charge roll. I'm with you! I run Rat Ogors and PCB's in tons of list and they slap.

      - Command Trait: Devious Adversary
      - Artefact: Warpstone Charm
      - Universal Spell Lore: Flaming Weapon
      Thanquol on Boneripper (430)
      - 4 Warpfire Projectors
      - Lore of Ruin: Skitterleap
      Warlock Engineer (100)
      - Universal Spell Lore: Levitate
      Grey Seer (120)
      - Lore of Ruin: Skitterleap
      - Aspect of the Champion: Tunnel Master
      20 x Clanrats (100)
      20 x Clanrats (100)
      10 x Stormvermin (130)
      Warp Lightning Cannon (150)
      Warp Lightning Cannon (150)
      Warp Lightning Cannon (150)
      Lauchon the Soulseeker (50)
      Warp Lightning Vortex (80)
      Vermintide (40)
      Thanquol can roast big squads, Warbringer can knock out just about anything, Clanrats to screen, Stormvermin help Warbringer stay alive, Grey Seer to have a GC on objectives to score bonus points, Endless Spells move block and do damage, all while the Engineer overcharges the cannons to blast whatever your heart desires.

    You say thanqoul can double unleash hell, but not on the same unit, right ?

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  ปีที่แล้ว

      The unit itself can't Unleash Hell twice, but Thanquol can issue the command twice; so once to himself and then once to a WLC/Jezzails/etc if they're also in range. I've been in situations where I used Thanquol to Unleash Hell two separate WLCs into a big monster model that charged since his flamethrowers don't excel into that.

    I’ve been neglecting my rat boys. Why no mention of Warpgnaw or the other Verminlords?

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Warpgnaw can be solid for his points since he also qualifies as a Masterclan hero, but I can't recommend any model that can no longer be purchased; then for the Verminlord Corruptor you can use the Blade of Corruption and make it a really fun slot machine build when it pops off. At the end of the day the Warbringer with DA, Warpstone Charm, and Flaming Weapon is just MILES ahead of both of those options when it comes to average damage output and if you want tricks instead the Deceiver/Skreech are better at that too.

    What abou clawlord?

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're running a big group of Stormvermin a Clawlord is a great addition! There was a second where we could build a "Smash Rat" which was a Clawlord + Arcane Tome + Flaming Weapon + teleporting with Lauchon who was given two stacks of Dreaded Death Frenzy; you could send him into almost anything and just wipe it since he gets all the extra attacks when he dies. They just nerfed Arcane Tome which took Flaming Weapon out of the equation so that strat's probably not a solid play anymore.

    Do you think running clan rats reinforced is worth it and what do you think about a 20 man unit of stormvermin with a claw lord helps buff clan rats and stormvermin. Appreciate any advice pretty new to skaven

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  ปีที่แล้ว

      With all the damage floating around right now I'd probably stick to 20 man squads of Clanrats; I'd just rather have 2 units instead of 1 and we aren't a low drop army anyways outside of 9 Fiends lists.
      For Stormvermin they can really be solid, I'm running a unit of 20 in my current list right now to help bodyguard the Warbringer against turn 1 alphas/shooting and then do damage in situations that call for it. I don't run a Clawlord because the Warbringer CA helps them do more damage in most cases and I just don't have the points for him. If you have any other questions just let me know!

  • @PetrichorPlays
    @PetrichorPlays ปีที่แล้ว

    My advice to skaven players: abandon big models. Plague censer bearers, rat ogors, and gutter runners will outperform everything.
    Stormfiends are a trap.
    Verminlords r lowkey bad, thanquol is great for a low drop alpha style list otherwise kinda too expensive

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a hard disagree on all fronts; Stormfiends, Thanquol, Warbringer, and so on are all tournament staples for successful Skaven lists. PCB's, Rogors, and Gutter Runners are all excellent too!

  • @PetrichorPlays
    @PetrichorPlays ปีที่แล้ว

    Stormfiends are so bad, I have to say this. In any phase of the game at least 33% of the game doing nothing.
    Best case scenario is they stay out of combat the whole game and stay shooting which means you have 1/3 of their points as a deadweight bloodbag. They are easily ignored by good players who eliminate your other tools or bully a large pack via bravery.
    Stormfiends are cute, but very bad. Weapons teams also very bad.
    Warp grinder drill team is fire tho

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Stormfiends are actually incredible! They just need to be run in a squad of 6 or 9, they want the More More Warp Power spell, and they need the +1 damage from the warpstone spark; if you can make that happen the squad of 9 will average right around 40 damage into a 4+ save where the squad of 6 will do around 30 just in shooting. They participate in your shooting phase, your opponent's charge phase when you Unleash Hell into whatever charged, and even in melee they're going to average out around another 10ish damage. Keep in mind too, when your unit takes damage you're killing off all of those melee ones first to keep your shooting alive!

  • @Kimtanashino
    @Kimtanashino ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Great overview of the Skavens. There are my favorite army as well and i agree with all the choices you made. Here are what some thoughts since the time i've been playing them since more than a year :
    1) Stormfiends :
    - They can do lots of damages but mostly when the save isn't so high (4+ or worse).
    - There are SO expensive it's sometimes hard to justify them.
    - I found 6 of them is already hard to move because their 6 bases take LOTS of space so i will never take 9 of them. 3 isn't bad, depending on what you shoot (perfect to calm 5 Gossamid archers for exemple)
    - I found the ratling one is the only one to worth its points (and by far), most of the time the Windlaunchers don't do lots of damages whatever the target, the Melee one isn't bad but not that great either unless it spikes with the shock gauntlets.
    2) Plague priest : yes their Great Plagues look amazing on paper but they will only affect the CLOSTEST hero at 13"... that sucks !
    3) Warplightning canon is very fun but : without an engineer it doesn't worth its cost. With that hero it's an amazing, powerful and fun unit it but now it costs 250 points. Taking two canon with an engineer close by looks like a good bargain despite the 400 points cost.
    4) Grey seer : love Death Frenzy, the 2 spells for such a little wizard and the warpstone eating 3d6 effect are great. Nevertheless, the spell of the warscroll is too hard to cast+affect target and disappointing.
    5) Gutter runners are good for their cost and utility, can be surprisingly good to finish wounded targets or a lonely foot buffer hero.
    Conclusion : Skavens are one the funniest armies in the game imo. Their lore is amazing, their model range is partially ignored by Games Workshop for no reason (despite the very high popularity of this army) and their rules are better with the last battletome without any doubt (the changing of subfactions into a hero-battlelined concept is awesome). Nevertheless, they don't perform well and they keep to be weaker than the majority of others AoS armies...since a pretty long time.
    - The unreliability vibe of Skavens doesn't pay, even when it spikes sometimes.
    - Some units keep to be overcosted (Stormfiends, Plague Monks, Doomwheel, Nightrunners...) compared to what they do.
    - Some clunky mechanics ruined the fun (Bell & Plague furnace still need to have units close by to move, Plague monks 6's to hit ability, Great plagues' targets, Eshin units with no protection like the wards they had in WHFB to express their amazing reflexes and dodging abilities...).
    Overall, i feel their battletome didn't receive enough attention or love (quoting some famous Skaven fans on TH-cam here). I'll keep playing them anyway.

If you can handle having 120+ models in an army its very fun. 1 thing I feel was missed out was the Deathmaster, I struggle to make a list without at least 1, can be hidden in a unit, cannot be killed, especially with Shadow Trinket Magnet artefact, 5 attacks in both shooting and melee, 6+ Hit is D3 mortals...

    • @warpfireminis

      Deathmaster is solid! I just usually struggle to find the points for him with everything else I want to bring. I've seen a few lists with him hidden in some Stormvermin and they're both in the new battalion, so they pop the Trinket and let them both fight first which seems like a lot of fun.

    Love the breakdown.
    Bit as a skaven players.
    There are 2 things I have to say.
    Firstly I would like to issue a challenge out for you.
    In your next game the following units shall not be used.
    Stormfiends, Thanqoul and plague censer bearers.
    Secondly there are a few things I would like to mention.
    Yes the grey seer is great having 3 is absolutely uselss.
    While it does sound great having the chance to be able to make an extra pile in, it’s not worth the cost.
    Often that extra pile in will do nothing.
    With our skaven range will already be in range with our combat weapons and unless your playing doomhweels the reason for its existence is more or less a joke.
    And sonce we are add it.
    Yes we can play many different ways and yes in theory one of them would be playing magic heavy.
    There is just one problem.
    We don’t really have any spells to cast.
    I mean after the first grey seer your’re basically casting all the necessary spells you need.
    With two you’re casting well basically all of the good spells we have an with the third one… you just spend a 120points to do nothing.
    -Skreech verminking is an interesting option, yet I would probably consider the warpgnaw verminlord as one of the better options.
    With the command trait devoius adversary.
    That guy will do as much if not more damage than a Verminlord warbringer.
    And he cost a 130points less then that guy.
    -clanrats are great meat-shields for their points.
    Yet with the extreme damage output most units have these days.
    5skryre acolytes will survive about as much as 20 clanrats, and you would still be left with 30points to spare for something else
    -while jezzails were fun in the last book, they currently don’t really have a role.
    Back then they were the hero snipers, which was amazing but with their current profile, being a unit with the single battlefield and artillery, they can never be taken in a sniper detachment.
    In addition to that their stormcast equivalent.
    Just do it better.
    They aren’t single and aren’t artillery (what the @“&@$ gw?!)
    Personally I don’t see ever a reason to take them, so long Warplightning cannons exist.
    Similar it is with the warlock bombardier.
    What reason is there for you taking a bombardier if your going all out with cannons.
    And even if your not the engineer is much cheaper then the bombardier.
    (Still I love him and will always take him when I can)
    Here is my conclusion.
    The skaven are an incredible army
    Yet in my opinion the new book was the worst thing that was ever given to them.
    Personally a new one needs to come sooner then later.
    And as somebody who is playing skaven frequently.
    I don’t like to say this.
    But our new book was just aged basly the moment it came out.
    Even our older book with the new points and battle line if changes would feel better then whatever this book is trying to be

      Just a hard disagree with you there my man!
      - Thanquol + 2 Grey Seers (or Skreech instead of one) to unlock 3 Clawsteps is well worth it; you definitely don't want to bring 3 Grey Seers. The charge trick and pile-in shenanigans are all excellent and can do big things in the right situations.
      - We have some of the best spells in the game! Death Frenzy, Dreaded Death Frenzy, Skitterleap, Dreaded Skitterleap, The Dreaded Thirteenth, Wither, More-More Warp Power, Warp Lightning Storm and more; add in Endless Spells like Lauchon, Ravenaks, Warp Lightning Vortex, Quicksilver Swords, Vermintide and we're killing it.
      - Warpgnaw Verminlord can't be purchased anymore and his damage is too swingy with so few attacks. Warbringer with Devious Adversary outclasses him in every way and does way more damage.
      - Clanrats rule! There are definitely a lot of units that can clear 20, but there are a lot of units that can't; we need bodies on objectives to win games and Clanrats are it. Look at every successful tournament list; they're bringing the Clanrats.
      - Bombardier shoots missiles, goes boom, kill-kills the man-things. Bombardier can't overcharge the cannons, so if you're bringing cannons you 100% go with a regular Engineer, otherwise I'll pay 10 points extra for missiles.
      I'm 24 wins and 2 losses right now with Skaven for our Challenge contest, went 3-2 at LVO (could have won one more, but took one bad loss), and play a ton of games with our rat fellas; we aren't the best, but we can certainly compete in almost every game with good play. The new book made us way better than we were, we just really need some updated book battle tactics and a few minor tweaks to put us back on top.

      I should probably say this much.
      Next to being somebody who enjoys playing at competitive events I am a hardcore lore fan of the ratman.
      Now to pit rhis simple I would like to ask you something.
      Lets say we are comparing the old 2.0 battltome with the new 2.1 battletome,
      But lets add a twist.
      Lets say that the old 2.0 battletome next to its broken realms update got an faq.
      An faq that gave it exactly the points and battleline if changes the current newer book has
      And lets say that that faq exchanges all rerrols for +1 to hit wound or save ing throws as it is currently with the new book.
      Which book would you prefer and why?
      After you answer me I’ll happily give you my oppinion.
      Also as a second question just because I am interested in hearing it, in all of those 26 games have you used a list that did not have any of the units currently well represented in the skaven meta as thanqoul, stormfiends or plague censer bearers.

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  ปีที่แล้ว

      If we're putting the points at the same level and changing the rerolls to +1 we're landing pretty close to the new book haha; there wasn't a huge leap with our 3e book (but it definitely still is better, the way the clans work, and so on) which is due to it coming out really early in 3e. I know you're seeing all these new battletomes (written by the new rules team) come out that just have incredible rules that are also thematic and you're feeling like Skaven got a bad deal, but the reality is that in spite of that we can still do really well in games which is the point I'm trying to drive home and help people to get to with this video.
      Every game I play has the units mentioned in this video, list building is important for every army and you need to bring the good stuff to compete in games. I don't personally run Stormfiends, but Thanquol, Warbringer, and PCB's have seen the table for sure.

      So apparently I can’t send you the whole text in one piece, so I’ll be giving you basically 2-3 messages one after another

    • @skreechverminking2227
      @skreechverminking2227 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s definitely an interesting thought you have, Yet I wouldn’t consider mine a boring one either.
      So basically the reason Why I think that the current book is a straight forward worser book the the last one with its broken realms update are the following:
      -the rules in three:
      While it does sound like a fun addition to the army, most rules in three just straight up don’t do much and are often more or less a straight forwardly put nerf to the last editions book.
      While I do agree that some of the buffs we get are not bad at all (three clawsteps ahead and the +1 to pray for pestilence)
      It also doesn’t really make much sense in a skaven way.
      Most of these abilities kinda feel like as if they are trying to tell us of three perfect friends holding hands and playing around a tree.
      Last time I checked every rat in that skaven book wants to kill that other friend of his, to take his place to show everybody who the real chosen on is
      Not whatever this stuff is.
      In a fluff context it makes absolutely no sense.
      For a rule kind of purpose lets start with this.
      While like mentioned some of the abilities are great or just barely interesting (clan pestilence, masterclan)
      Others aren’t that great.
      For example clan moulder is probably that one clan that got a nerf in their ability in every way,
      Where they were able to take a single mutations for either rat ogres and hell pit abomination (depending which one you needed more,m) free the first time and for each one you got one more,
      The current one is restricted to you taking either 0 master moulder to buff one and 3 or more to buff 2 or more hell pits.
      For one we lost the mutation ability for rat ogres
      And apparently now having two hell pits to gain a trait now takes a pretty high points tax.
      Personally I’m not a fan of this idea.
      They could have done it differently.
      And in all cases I prefer the clan moulder abilities from the last book.
      Now I do k ow that rat ogors got one of the mutations just added to them from the last,
      And while this does make them somewhat good.
      The models lack show that toughness straight forward.
      And it just is more fun to have well options for your rat ogors.
      After all we are the masters of mutations and frankenstein monsters, why the hell would we just stick to one mutation.
      There needs to be more.
      -Clan eshin:
      While the clan eshin trait did change a bit (from straight rerolls to straight buffs to the hit and wound rolls)
      The ability on itself didn’t really change much.
      I mean it’s a slight nerf and I guess a slight buff in certain circumstances, but with that said there isn’t much to say.
      The slight nerf for one being that you can’t build a list with 2 eshin heroes to be able to pick up to two enemy heroes marked for death, that and that apparently you can’t gain that buff for the every hero after the first for your shooting attacks.
      And the slight buff well I guess you could sayis that one time taking three heroes will mark every enemy hero on the table for death, which kinda isn’t really a buff unless your frenemy is taking 4 or more heroes, which happens sometimes.
      1Clan verminus on the other hand is a mucb more interesting twist.
      While I don’t like the changes in a lore aspect (same with the other clan abilities)
      The rules make this one well in a way just plainly worser then the one we had and at a same time slightly better.

    For the warpfire projectors, you only target the number of models, in the unit, that are within range. You don't automatically hit everyone in the target unit.
