I think RC is the epitome of minimalistic. We use Saturdays as our day off, but I think adding math fact, geography, spelling, and phonics drillwork to Sundays after quiettime and lunch would be awesome.
This is a great video! It’s always helpful to see other homeschool families in action! I’m considering starting to use a specific curriculum only. I have always pulled resources from a wide variety of sources, and I’ve noticed it’s become overwhelming. It’s easy to fall into the “I wanna do all the things” mode, and get spread too thin in many directions.
Thx. I'll look at Spanish book, I require 6 yrs Spanish but recently my oldest daughter started Latin because of schedule issues in getting the Spanish level she needed so she switched and loves it so I think we will actually require 10 years Latin and additional 6 years Spanish ontop of Latin. By 4 years into Latin it should not be hard to pick up Spanish. My oldest step son is an American sign language and music major and loves sign language so my kids want that too. (all language including math and art is language, it's that root symbolism we seek to explore) For me 6 yrs Spanish is none negotiable. other language I can negotiate but will always be in addition not a swap. So its extra curricular. Will see all my kids are 5 years a part so will have differing exposure. But start with touches of Latin grammar in 2nd grade.
Just came upon your videos and falling in love with Robinson Curriculum. Your videos are so helpful and informative. I noticed that they recommend no screens until age 16. Wow! How does that look for your family? Are your kids completely screen-free or how do you juggle what’s more and more a huge part of our modem world (I agree that it’s not for the better IMO, but it’s hard)?
No, we are not completely screen free but I do have limits and boundaries. Here is a podcast episode I recorded with Dr. Lybrand on just this topic, I think you will find it very helpful.
I definitely have worked a lot on it over the years. One book recently that really revolutionized my mornings was "The Miracle Morning: The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life (Before 8AM)" it helped me take care of myself better, be more productive, and start the day with the right attitude. Even if I can only do a 1 min of each of the few main activities, it makes a huge difference.
I would love to see a more up to date ditl. I have children similar ages 14yo daughter, 13yo son, 9 yo daughter, 7 year old daughter, 5 year old son, 3 yo son, 2 yo daughter. We have used Robinson for many years but I’ve always used something distant m different with my little. I’m having a really hard time with my 5yo right now. He just can’t memorize anything. Like your 5yo daughter knew her sounds B and numbers . He cannot get it. In wording with him only about 50-70 minutes a day as he can’t really go longer than that. He will get it one day then the next he can’t remember. A teacher friend said he was a kenesthetic(sp) learner And I needed to do more hands on learning. I’m trying that but he’s still struggling a lot. I have successfully taught 4 so I just feel like something is off. Any suggestions?
Yes, I have a course where I lay out exactly how to get up to speed prior to RC. It’s what I do with my Littles. It doesn’t take that long each day and it covered all senses. www.sustainablehomeschooling.com/rcforlittles
This works well for my older girls as, once they can read, they can study other subjects and we yse the daily essay time to cover those. The thing I'm still stuck on...where I live in Australia we can't just do the 3Rs with the littles like I'd like. I'm talking about the 5 year olds up to when they are independent readers. They still have to do science, social studies, arts and health too. It really takes up their concentration time to cram all these in. Any ideas on how to tick those boxes without burnout would be hugely helpful for this age group. I have 5 in this stage (1 of them is almost up and running independently). Thank you
Why can't you just plug in the RC books for Science and Social Studies? You can see with RC online the categories each books fall in. You shouldn't need a full blown curriculum for each item, a book is a collection of information as well. There are some art books where kids can just follow the steps and draw/teach themselves (example amzn.to/3hHoyzp) and Khan Academy had free video courses on anything else you would need as well.
@@ourhouse thank you for replying. Yes, I do for older children. They are on auto-pilot and it's great. I am talking about children who are still learning to read. So I pretty much have to spoon feed these other subjects and it takes away from the beautiful simplicity and freedom that focusing on the 3Rs in this stage of their development brings. I don't mind doing a read aloud or having a chat or watching a video on bees or ants or whatever, but for these to take up their precious bit of concentration time, I struggle with that. My 5 year old is still very immature and he is loving learning to read but can't even write yet so what do I do for science and social studies when my state requires it? I am hoping I'm making sense🙂
So great!! Thank you for sharing! Absolutely LOVING your channel!! Always such a great blessing & encouragement.. I've got a Q for you.. on how you deal w/ teaching your littles to be tidy.. So curious, do you have a daily system? I just have a huge feeling that you have some brilliant system on this topic. We only have two littles, and I'm about to lose my mind...w/ the mess that these 2 little humans generate. I'm seriously on the verge of getting rid of every single toy, and letting them go toyless for a little while...
We only have 1 small Ikea tray system of Legos, the girls have a couple dolls each, and the boys have one canvas bag of transformers, we also have a bible felt set in one tray and recently added some potato head pieces which I regretted lol. We have chess/checkers and a few board games and some dress up clothes in one closet and that is IT for all 6 kids. We live in a 1500sq house so there's just no space for it but on the flip side it is way easier to keep a house tidy. Having older kids help since they do the laundry, and dishes. The little kids are responsible for one room each day to do tidy ups 3 times a day before or after every meal. Big bins or canvas bags helps little kids clean up fast. Also each kid only has 1 little green Ikea bin of clothing and some church clothes hung up, that's it. That way when they put their clothes away from when the big kids operate their piles, it's easy for even the 4 year old to put away. When we start to bring more stuff in, it makes me overwhelmed, so less is definitely more. That is a great video idea I will film it soon with more details, thank you!
It's not bad if they at least just do a lesson of Math on their own. The brain needs a day to get back into the math groove so taking two days off, is more like 3 days off.
Hi congratulations. I saw your post recently. I really enjoyed 😉 and still follow. I am from PUERTO Rico 🇵🇷 homeschooling 5 and 6y full time nurse looking for an alternative and tips and yours have fits our family needs. So 😊
Good question! I have a chore chart and designated cleaning windows where everyone pitches in. The kids are also old enough now to really help in the kitchen.
Our homeschooling family is relocating to a much warmer climate and we are considering buying a house with think about having a pool...is the upkeep worth it, for the kids especially? Any thoughts, pros/cons would be appreciated! Great video, btw!
Yeah I'm thinking those mobile quiz machine/device rather than online. They screw up computers and trying to limit it and focus on other types of interactions.
I love watching your channel. Really considering switching to RC. I use Abeka right now. I have 5 kids: 13, 9, 6, 4 and 2. Also I really would love to know where you got that cute bookcase from that your littlest is using in the video? Thanks again!
Everything I ever buy is from offer up or facebook marketplace. I'm sure it would be a bit of a change from Abeka. I can't imagine homeschooling any other way now. If you have any questions, just let me know!
I take a week or two off around holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. We don't school on birthdays and field trip days with our church homeschool group. I took a couple months off for the first time this summer and really regret it now. One of my boys regressed so much and I feel like we are starting over.. I won't do that again. If anything I might do the whole Sabbath schooling thing.. 7 weeks on and 1 week off if I feel we need a break.
Love this! I've read the introduction to Rays twice and still can't figure where to start my 7 year old. He has his add/sub facts and we're working on mult/div now along with the flash cards. Any ideas on where to start him? Also, is grammar teacher taught not self taught by kids?
Kids could just read the grammar lessons themselves from the book. I just like doing it for multiple children on the board :) I think I need myself, ha!! As far as Ray's, I am always in favor of 10 and under jut starting from the beginning and letting them blow though it quickly to where it becomes challenging. That way you get rid of any gaps of knowledge. My boy was doing simple math problems but when we went back to the very first few lessons of Rays, I noticed he had a hard time saying the double digit numbers right. He might be dyslexic but I wouldn't have known if I didn't start at the beginning, now I now he needed those simple drills. There is another resource you might like too called "Every Day Number Stories" it is free and I have it on my blog under free homeschool resources. They say that by the time the child is done with that book, they are ready for Saxon 5/4. ourhouserodriguez (dot) com under free resources. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I love your power moment about focusing how awesome your life is. I am loving this video
We are so blessed, aren't we? It's amazing how just focusing on that one thought for a few minutes starting the day, can do for the rest of it.
Your reading nook is lovely I've been on the hunt at thrift stores for potential reading chairs.

We will also work on the vocabulary for two weeks. I think it will help my boys remember them.
Your attitude in the beginning of the video is awesome!! I so need to change my mindset. Have you always had a great attitude or how did you fix it?

Do you think it’s worth buying the actual curriculum or can I just use the book list?
Definitely you need the actual curriculum, it's more than just a book list. The course of study alone by Dr. Robinson is worth the money.
Where can I find and print the dolce sight words?
Here is where I printed them from. sightwords.com/sight-words/dolch/
Yay! Alphaphonics😉!
It's really starting to grow on me the more I do it every day.
So the Robinson curriculum is not just reading, writing, math?
It is. I think at this point I was adding in some extras but I learned my lesson lol. Truly less is more.
So do you not do school Monday - Wednesday?
Bex In Boyland I do, we do school Mon to Sat.
Wasn't that Robertson the only one that was sponsored by Saxon
