I love this version of the song it has such a somber and tragic sound to it, which is very fitting of Ira Hayes's story cause his story was a very tragic story watching his people suffer, friends die on the island of Iwo Jima,to having no care about you even after being hailed a hero
My father went through paratrooper training with Ira Hayes in WW2. he knew him along with 2 of the other two flag raisers. One of my bucket list items is to donate a small amount of what i can afford in his memory
Yes, I think on Ira's uniform there was a badge that showed he was jump- qualified. I hadn't known that some Maines did that in WW 2. Thank you, and thank your dad.
@@caseysmith544 Peter was a Native musician and activist who originally wrote and performed the song in Ira's memory. Johnny was really inspired by Peter as an artist and activist and they became fast friends after meeting and Johnny did a record in 1964 dedicated to the struggle of indigenous people in America and their fight for representation and justice. He included five of Peter's songs on the record, this one among them, which went to number two on the billboard country music charts. The song wasn't written specifically for Cash to perform though. Peter passed away suddenly October of the following year aged 34.
It's wind of the indians dance..

Townes, you were the most underrated singer in the history of country music. I know you're gone, but you sang with such passion. We miss you...
Ira Hayes was a true American hero that needs more recognition
In the marine corps he’s more highly recognized as a hero and even taught about in classes

So many have covered Townes. 7 come 11 my Brother
Does anyone knows a better version of this song than Townes's? I'm yet to find one.
Totally agree. I also feel that way about his version of Dead Flowers

Johnny Cash
This is great cover of the Jonny Cash song.
Looks as it has been written by Peter La Farge.
@@deinonychusart4063 that Jonny cash did record the song
And the Johnny Version is a great cover too, this is Peter La Farge's song, he wrote the lyrics and music, period.
@@douglaspatrick868 Yes but I thought he did for Jonny Cash.
