      Let me re-watch this clip to remind myself how I'm getting sellable photos with my cheap gear over the person who buys $30k in equipment and has no soul.

    Artie,
    This is a great video. Over the years I have lost count of how many folks mentioned to me, that the EF 2x converters are not good, as they do not make sharp images. I was convinced even before buying my first big super tele (EF 500mm f/4L IS USM) in 2011, that the 2x will be just fine. Having had a copy of your original The Art of Bird Photography book for many years, I read about your successes with even stacking the EF 2x and EF 1.4x together. I, too, have used that combo to obtain an effective focal length of 1,400mm and get very clear, detailed images. So I am always at a loss at how some folks have such a vendetta against good quality photography equipment. I always say: "Surely Canon would not invest in R&D for a converter that is going to produce rubbish". I always say the results are just a testament of the photographer's photography skills and not the poor quality of the equipment. Keep up the great work Artie! Cheers from Down Under. Oshkosh...

    So many talk bad about tele extenders. I think I had some of the first ones canon made back in the film days. then went to large format and now back to digital, which allows me to do some of the things 40 years ago I use to love. your work is outstanding and I hope some day (being 63 i hope not to long) Ill be able to have a few like yours. regards Michael Andersen

    Hi Bhanu Devgan, Very good question. The Extender EF1.4X II or the EF 2.0X II can be used with the EF 200-400mm F4L IS USM Extender 1.4X lens and mounted on the EOS 7D Mark II or any of the EOS SLR bodies.
    The major concern to keep in mind when using extenders is that the effective f-stop of the lens will decrease when adding extenders. Using the internal 1.4X Extender gives the lens a f5.6 effective aperture which will autofocus, but using additional extenders will decrease the aperture another 1 or 2 stops depending on which extender you add. This light loss could cause the autofocus to not function.
    Most EOS bodies require a minimum aperture of f5.6 to autofocus properly. Only the EOS 1D-X, 5D Mark III and 7D mark II can autofocus at f8 using the center point. If you have additional questions you can contact our US based tech support team at bit.ly/ContactCanon for assistance.
    We hope you find this helpful.

      +Jason B If a teacher has no teach the basics while out in the field with professional gear then it's a waste of time and he has every right to grumble. Students should already have the basic knowledge and habits and by hiring a Pro they are asking for knowledge to be imparted to them from someone who has years of experience.
      Arthur should not have to remind conscientious student to bring the TC along nor should it be necessary for him to tell a student to rebalance the rig when you install/remove a TC. Perfect distribution of weight means you can manipulate your camera/lens with one pinky finger and release it and it shall not move. Once you lost the balance that cannot be true anymore. You will not be able to hold on your subject unless you physically hold the camera or lens from moving. Wrong approach! Also like he said you do not want to damage your camera by having it slam down against the tripod because the weight is uneven.
      Once you get past yourself young man then perhaps you may be able to observe and learn from the advanced lessons and knowledge from Arthur.

    Hi Arthur, At the outset, thank you for such a detailed and explanatory video. The query I have is if we can attach either the 2.0 X or 1.4X TC to a 200-400 lens with a 7D MkII. Reason for my question being, when you have explained, the 1.4 TC you mentioned a full frame body. Request if you could clarify. Thanks

    Hi Canon USA, I have a question. I have been using the 1.4x extender for some time now with my EF 400mm F/4 DO with very good success. I recently decided to get the 2.0x extender. I understood before getting it that I will lose 2 stops of light and the max aperture will lower from 4 to 8. What I did not anticipate with the 2.0x extender, is that I lose most of my 65 All Cross Type AF points with the 7D Mark II. I am only limited to two single points and the 'plus sign' points, that's it! In addition, the AF speed has been greatly reduced. And finally, the quality of images are not as sharp with the 2.0x vs. the 1.4x. With all these limitations, what is the 2.0x extender really good for? The subject at far away distance has to be still and not moving with really just a single AF point; having multiple AF points for moving subjects is necessary. Solutions!?

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ezra M B Hello Ezra M B,
      All EOS bodies that support f/8 auto focus only work with the center AF point active. The EOS 7D Mark II will have only the center point available for AF when the effective aperture of the lens and/or extender is f/8. The four surrounding points are sensitive to vertical lines if the AF point expansion is enabled. This information is covered on pages 99-103 of your camera's full instruction manual. If you are attempting to use AF points other than the center AF point with this combination it might account for the lack of image sharpness. We suggest you contact our US based, technical support team at bit.ly/ContactCanon for additional assistance.
      We hope you find this helpful.

    Canon says, to mount the extender to the lens first and not vice versa as you did in that video. What is finally to be recommendet and in order to for proper functionality?

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Siegfried Krause Hi Siegfried,
      Thanks for taking time to view the tutorial. Canon recommends that the Extender EF be mounted to the lens first, then attach the lens/extender combo to the body. The body is recommended to be powered off while mounting the lens. Many photographers will first mount the Extender to body with no issues. To insure proper communication of the extender/lens combo to the body, we suggest mounting the extender to lens, then to body as the recommended procedure. We hope this is helpful.

      Hi JCEppley, Our Canon Extenders EF 2x III and EF 1.4x III will be a great match to your EF 400mm f2.8. Using the EF 1.4x III will give you a 560mm effective focal length while the EF 2x III gives you an 800mm equivalent. You will reduce the maximum aperture by 1 stop with the EF 1.4x III and 2 stops with the EF 2x III. We hope you find this helpful.

      Hi Arthur and thank you for the reply. I already returned the extender after reading several other comments about it not working for them either. Actually the place I bought it from told me there were problems between the extenders and my lens in particular, some work, some don’t. The inconsistency is troubling and they were hoping for a canon fix or solution to this at some point. I’ll wait a while before / if I decide to try another. I want to try again but there is obviously a problem somewhere. You shouldn’t really have to call tech support for a $2500.00 rig to work properly in my opinion. Thanks anyway Arthur, I appreciate your response. Let’s go Canon, fix this!

      Hi there. With the Extender EF 1.4x III attached, some autofocus functionality is possible with certain camera bodies, such as the EOS 5D Mark IV or the EOS 7D Mark II. However, focusing can be a bit more difficult with low-contrast or low-light subjects. Also, autofocus will not be possible when using the Extender EF 2x III with that lens. Most users will not need to perform an AF Microadjustment when placing a new lens or extender on the camera. If you feel you need to make such an adjustment, you can find instructions on this on page 106-111 of the camera manual. Here is a link: Canon.us/e89b.

    I got my first extender today after watching this clip. I got the Canon 1.4 mk3 to use with my Canon EF400 prime for birding. Whilst it work just fine with my 7D2, it will not autofocus with my 6D unless I select liveview and then it's very slow to react. Am I screwing up someplace?

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael! On the EOS 6D, if you use an extender with a lens and the effective maximum aperture becomes smaller than f/5.6, autofocus won't be possible with the exception of [FlexiZoneAF (Single)] or [Live Mode]. On the EOS 7D, the AF sensor is a bit more sensitive and will still allow AF to be used up to f/8. We hope you find this explanation helpful!

      Thanks for your timely response to my concerns. I've found that using the extender with my EF400 5.6 (no I.S.)/7D2 handheld makes acquiring sharp images almost impossible and using it with 6D in Live Mode, horribly slow to find focus. As it's not compatible with any other of my lenses, I plan to return it for a credit.

    Dear Arthur/Canon, I have the Canon: 100-400 IS II, 70-200 IS II f/2.8, and 300 IS II f/2.8 which I use the 1.4xIII on a 7DII and 6D body and in general I'm happy with them. My only problem is when I use the 7DII with the 100-400 IS II plus the 1.4x sometimes at f/8 the bokeh/out of focus areas has some artefacts/streaks. You can see the very same thing I'm talking about, at the photo with the two cranes when it zooms in at min 5:32. It is noticeable both in front and behind the cranes; it is though more pronounced behind them. To see what I'm talking about make the video 1080 at least and maximize on a 27inch display. The grass bokeh renders a bit strange, like lines, stars, chicken feet. I do not know how to better describe it. Is it because you have long and thin grass that is moved about by the wind? I've been trying to figure out why this happens in some shots and not in others and if it is a body, extender, lens issue, shutter speed, tripod/monopod. Of course now I see the same thing on a pro''s photo so clearly not just my ''fault'/user error or equipment failure. I've been shooting Canon for 20 years so generally speaking I know what I'm doing :-)) But I cannot still figure out why sometimes I get these weird bokeh patterns (and I've only noticed them on green out of focus areas) and how to avoid them. They only occur when the 1.4x III is used with my 7DII and the 100-400 II at f/8. Not in 6D not in any of the other lenses and combos. Maybe its a fluke like certain environmental conditions that simply did not re-occur when I use some other combo. Only now I noticed them in Arthur's photo and can only speculate it is whenever maybe tall slim green things (like grass or alpha-alpha) that move around (e.g. due to wind). Any advice/explanation welcome.

      Hello Dimitris!
      It sounds like you are experiencing a unique condition in your images. It is most helpful to address this through our EOS email support agents. This would allow you to send an original sample image, from your lens and camera, that illustrates the issue. You can contact our EOS team through the EMAIL SUPPORT button at the following link: Canon.us/jpk3q
      We hope that this is helpful.

      @CanonUSA  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Catherine:
      When you add the Extender 1.4EX to the EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM lens, the effective maximum aperture becomes f/5.6. You will be able to auto focus with all 65 AF points, using this combination of extender and lens. Please refer to page 101 of your camera manual under Group B. Here is a shortcut to the manual - Canon.us/mpyh7.
      We hope you find this useful.

    Hi Arthur, I have a problem in obtaining sharp images using 7D MII with Canon EF 100-400/4.5-5.6 V1 and the extender Canon 1.4X II. I made lot of tests even using a tripod and the result is the same - no sharp images at 400 mm. Without extender my images are really sharp. Do you think as well that I have to change to the new extender v. III? Thanks

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Genu! The Extender EF 1.4x III certainly does not disappoint, but it does not necessarily mean there's anything wrong with your version II extender. Our team of experts is happy to go over everything with you to help determine what is causing the lack of sharpness and recommend a solution. You can reach out to them at 1-800-OK-CANON (800-652-2666) weekdays between 8 AM and midnight, or on Saturdays between 10 AM and 8 PM ET. We hope this helps!

    • @CanonUSA

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John. Both the EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM and the combination of the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and the Extender EF 2x III yield absolutely stunning image quality. The advantage lies more with the EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM lens for being 600mm without the need for an extender, as well as having a wider maximum aperture of f/4 instead of f/5.6. We hope this helps.

    my canon t4i can autofocus at f/5.6 maximum aperture. its mean if I buy 400mm f/5.6 lens I can't use tele extenders? what will happening if I use extenders?

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, dandantoronto!
      You can use tele-extenders with the EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens and increase its focal length substantially. What you'll need to keep in mind is that autofocus won't be possible as the extender would tighten the lens' minimum aperture to f/8 or more, and that's beyond the camera's ability to autofocus properly. The simplest way to compensate for this is to focus the lens manually.
      We hope this helps!

    Meh - one of these days I'll get one of those monster prime lenses. For now my longest lens is a 100-400mm Mark II lens, and I did a bunch of testing with three kinds of teleconverters, including the newest Mark III teleconverters from Canon, and I found that on my Canon 5DS, I could get just as sharp by upsizing a crop as by using a teleconverter. And the advantage is that I can track better because the frame is bigger so I don't lose the subject, and I don't lose light (other than by cropping).

  • @vOCesUGa1
    @vOCesUGa1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why do birders used cropped sensors i.e. 7D mkII on 10k lens?

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello:
      The smaller APS-C size sensor on the 7D Mark II creates a crop factor effect. This makes the image captured with this camera appear closer than if the same lens was used to take the same picture with a full frame sensor camera. It effectively gives you more range. The article at the link below explains this in more detail. Canon.us/drpw2
      We hope this answers your question.

    Don't like to use original camera strapping because it let see the brand, the model that you are using. The stupidity is to have a big white lens who show to the whole world the Canonist that you are. It's true that most people will covered it whit camo tricks. Photography is full of stupidity sometime as photographers are wearing red clothing but want to hide the big white Canon lens ! VIVA NIKON !
