Hi Nihindu I bought this as soon as it was released and it remains one of my favourite Tull albums. Try listening to any track from Broadsword and the Beast - a real treat.

Yeah thats a good album. We'll try to make sure one or two songs from it are on the next patron poll for sure.

Barriemore Barlow is a top tier drummer (and my personal favorite). Geddy Lee of Rush once said Barlow was his only choice for drummer if he were able to piece together his "Super Rock Group". Neil Peart fans may disagree, but Neil Peart was also a great fan of Barlow. John Bonham, drummer of Led Zeppelin, famously called Barriemore Barlow "the greatest rock drummer England ever produced" and praised his technical and creative drumming.
Is this Satire? Ian Anderson combines humor and social commentary within much of his work. Jethro Tull is a very deep and intellectually complex band. People are missing out if they don't explore Tull from the beginning to current times.

There has to be something in the water in the British Isles, that fosters GREAT musicians (like Ian, Jeff Beck and millions of others). Love their sense of humor too! Jethro Tull make great use of dynamics, from soft and folky to deep hard rock. Truly Prog greats! (Tho I don't think Ian likes that description.) Cheers all, thanks Nihindu. Rock on!

This is not a good song to move your body and nod your head to because of all the time-signature changes. When I do it, I've learned to sit out for a lot of it and move my body only on certain parts - otherwise you'll confuse yourself! This is such an iconic Tull and classic prog song!
Ian's definitely in deprecating mode. It's all about ripping down pompousness, including his own, would be my guess.

Such a strange and wonderful artist / band. The folk influence hasn't aged as well given the current musical environment , but yes Ian is full of satire, sass, complexity, flights of fancy, double-entendre, social commentary, and more. BTW, a 'pumpkin eater' comes from an old nursery rhyme and is someone who cheats or more recently, cheats on a lover.

Basically, the minstrel here is performing for an audience (society) with all of its foibles! The old men's cackle is their annoying laughter (at others' expense'?), panel-beaters are folks who fix dents in cars (literal or metaphor for folks frantically trying to hastily hammer things straight that are broken?), factory cheaters (not sure, but dishonest that's certain), salaried and collar scrubbing refers to well paid professionals who spend a great deal of effort on their appearance (not substance?), a belly warmer is a mistress (which is followed by reference to sex acts "still rubbing, etc.'), infant bleating one line jokers (adults whose humor is infantile)-- basically the audience is a bunch of goons, cheaters of various kinds, superficial, and all of them worthy of criticism and mockery, but the minstrel is so entertaining he wins them over and ingratiates himself to them: "look at all the friends he made".. suggesting performers typically stoop to the level of the lowest common denominator in their audience. Ian often writes about alternate versions of HIMSELF not in a narcissistic way but in a self-critical way. What if I was like this kind of musician or person? Morally, what would I be then? That's what I think he is asking. If you really want to go down a rabbit hole of Ian imagining himself looking at another version of himself (as he observes the sordid world around him), try to puzzle out Baker Street Muse-- one of the most lyrically complex songs I've tried to wrap my head around.

I honestly find the folk sound a refreshing change of pace, but I definitely understand it not being everyone's cup of tea
