- The Ultimate Ultralight Baitcasting Reel: No Thumb Needed with the Daiwa Salamandura Air TW with the Roro Spool TX25S! The jig was 1/16th oz and with the soft plastic together, it totals about 2.7 grams!
This is a great way for anglers who are new to baitcasting and want to practice casting. Eventually, the brakes can be reduced as one learns how to use their thumb for the initial cast as well for when they need to stop the spool at the end of the cast!
Want to learn how to setup your BFS Reel this way? Watch this video in how I tune my reels:

That rod is the definition of noodle
Actually no... This is a graphite rod. There are UL Glass rods that noodles around way more
@@rawrfishing aren't they so sensitive so you can feel bites
i mean its probably for crappie because he has a crappie jig and its more fun to have a hard fight with them
@@brandongoutdoors it's multi specie rod! It's graphite with a fast tip action. Plenty of techniques can be applied
@@tgkclan1885 definitely sensitive! I have been using this line and portrayed in many of my full video episodes
Yeah, my 40 yr old diawa doesn't work without a thumb 😂
Lol... U still use it?
@@rawrfishinggive a good Fisher a good reel and it'll last a century
Nor does my 28 year old Abu Garcia hahaha still my favorite reel
@@Fishofftheperc30just lost my 15yr old abu Garcia while out on my kayak. She sank to the bottom of the lake.. I loved her, bought the new black max to replace her. I stand by abu Garcia, they are great reels for the price! Especially if they last as long as they do! I would love a nice DC tho, just don’t have 230$ to spend on a reel.
I have an old Diawa and I love it
Finally a person who really uses his brain! Congratulations! First of all I appreciate you cast with your right hand and after this you keep the rod in the same hand using the left one for reel. The reel settings is absolutely corect! Good job! 😉👍
thx! there's so many ways to configure reels. I find this a very practical way for beginners to setup and use. I also think that hand retrieve reels simply tells you which side the handle is on and it's not made specifically for left or right handers. For example here, left hand retrieve reel being used by me as a right hand dominate person only make sense as I want to use my more dexterous arm to cast and impart motion. i can use my left hand to reel in.
I just got my first bait castor and put too thick line on it had to go all the way back home re line it and got the hang of it bout 10 mins in it’s honestly the best reel Iv touched

I used to just use spinning rods cuz it's all I knew but I've gotten really into fishing this year and I now realize why all u guys use BC, it's so much faster to get casts off and so crazy accurate, still a lot to learn tho
Yes! The pros of it definitely make it worth to spend the time to learn and understand the reel! I think you will enjoy this journey as you master the art of bait casting!
Look no Backlash... Aaaaannd no Distance.. 😂
Sorry, just had to say it Jimbo. Love your channel. 😎👍
Ppl walk before crawling! Methods to configure a reel might not be ideal for proficient anglers, but it's something beginners loves.
@rawrfishing I'm still crawling. But have learned alot thanks to great guys like you Jimbo. Seriously, Thank you 😎👍
U bet!
Right? Using a bait caster and saying not to use your thumb is not the way to teach someone.. you should always me gliding the line over your thumb no matter the break setting to get used to it. I’m all for high breaks for beginners.. but you gotta start learning how to use a bait caster or just stick to a spinning rod.
Please do not assume! This was never a casting tutorial video to begin with! It is just simply showing how capable the reel is! Tutorial videos are on the channel, which all emphasize on thumbing.
I just got an okuma bait castor 3 days ago and I had to respool it 3 times first time too much line second time it was too tight not enough line and was one sided did the 3rd line today looks pretty good so far first reel had lots of birds nest but with a little patience and effort you’ll get it for sure I’m still getting it but imma get there 😂💯
which reel did u end up getting? and what kind of braking is it? If it's full magnetic braking, I have a short video that I use to explain my configuration.
@@rawrfishing the reel is okuma and yes it is full magnetic braking I’ve watch hundreds of videos and I still don’t quite get everything yet
This is how I do it (link below). Yes, the intital tuning will be over braked, but you can slowly back it down and learn to thumb. I learned a lot making this video and will make another one this fall when the kiddo is in school and I have time to plan and execute. But hope this help first!

Since i get Tatula 300, it is my favourite baitcaster. I don't use my thumb even with 5 oz. lures.
Tatula or Daiwa reels with the zero tension adjuster are amazing. Brakes controlled really well. I need a Tatula 300 to replace my 13 fishing concept a3
i wish i could tune my bait caster this good
It's easy. If u got a magnetic braking system, i got a tutorial if u Need it
This is just my opinion and to be clear I love my casting rods/reels that I have mainly for bass fishing. I have ultimate control and if you fish a lot your accuracy gets pretty deadly. But when I am finesse fishing with anything less than a 1/4 oz and sometimes 3/8 I am just more comfortable with a spinning rod. Maybe it's the feel of it beat into me over the years or confidence. I just think if you had two fisherman side by side target fishing and making long casts all with an 1/8 oz bait I bet the spinning rod will cast to more targets and will cast much much further on average
U know ur fishery better than I do. Distance is not an issue for me and I am happy using what I use. As long as you are happy, tight lines.
That thing hit the brakes so hard

Daiwa China produced this one. For the Chinese market
@@rawrfishing i see
I feel like Daiwa Japan always loses out to other Daiwa's in terms of design. How did Daiwa China produce IMZ?
I am not familiar with that reel and technology and how it was developed. But intelligence in reel technology is something that gotten big in China. Kastking was the first to present their smart reel in China show before even Daiwa announced their imz. That's like a hard blow to kastking lol. They were mad at icast because ppl think kastking copied Daiwa in the trend, but that was not the case! Kastking did first!
@@rawrfishing Is Kast King also developing a smart reel? surprised. Have you tried its performance? I would like to know because I can't buy it in Japan due to legal regulations. By the way, if I remember correctly, Shimano applied for a limited patent on the Smart Reel a few years ago.

Is this how you tune all of your baitcasters? Knob loose breaks half way? I’m I’m impressed I wonder if it will work that well for my heavy duty musky reels, 80 pound braid on a daiwa prorex
As long as it's magnetic, yes.
If you don’t rent to be able to cast far yes..
Is that sound normal for the Salamandura ? I just noticed it when casting . Only happens like the first couple of yards on the cast
Yep, it just means the brake is fully out and slowing down
🤯🤯🤯
Thank you mister
🙏🙏🙏
Thx for watching
Yes but you do lose out on some distance when you use that high of brakes so I always prefer to use my thumb so I have my control. Once you get used to it I never get any backlash
I do casting tutorials! Check em out! Once you learn how a reel works, you can do what works for you! Do remember... Everyone crawl before walking. And everyone walks before running
You lose a ton of distance. You’d be lucky to cast 50% as far as you could with a optimal break setting.
Everyone walks before running. Again, there's plenty of videos of me showing how I explore reels, configure em for beginners and experts.
There's a little science behind it. You got to play and mess with everything and really dail it in for what you're throwing. Everything needs to compliment each other. Rod, line, reel, thumb, form, all of it to maximize efficiency. Take alot of time on the water and casts to get the most out of you gear. This is a good way to start and gain confidence, and that alone is more than half of any fishing secret to catch more fish.
Yep. Take a deep dive into my other videos and see!
If you don’t have to use your thumb. You are throwing half as far as you can.
8시간 낚시하면서 7시간 백리쉬를 풀고 있는 친구에게 이 채널을 소개합니디.
Lol... Hope it will help
That's nice, would you rate the outcome of that cast, pretty good, compared to what distance you would achieve, without incorporating resistance, where you would benefit from freeplay...? 6 out of 10,? 7 out of 10? Better than that? Worse than that?
I would not compare the outcome as this method is not for achieving casting distance, but to allow beginners to learn how to cast and gain confidence in using the style of reel. As they train their thumb, they can back down the brakes to achieve further distances. This was mentioned in the video desc. Thanks for watching
For 2yards cast tutorial, it's good enough.
But damn, this daiwa brake sounds like a machinery about to blow up.
Went further than that. That's the inductor braking cup shooting out. Sounds beautiful to me
You can rely on the brakes and not use your thumb at all IF YOU DONT CAST TOO HARD. You left that out completely! :)
Nope. I executed it perfectly fine. Casting power was normal. And you can turn up brakes and cast hard if u want.
We are on a spot with murry cod. They are around 50-130 pound and chance for 200+ pound Depending on whos hungry. Id like to buy a new setup to flick some lures. Had a look at the "13 fishing concept tx3 but i think it might be too light. Love to colours on it tho
Not a fan of 13 fishing rods. I broke every single one when I was trying to get into their ambassador team. They made Me buy so many rods and reels but never put me on their team. So... I haven't tried any of their new stuff. But note... Every single rod broke!
@@rawrfishing really not sure on what setup to buy at all. I might just keep my old shakespear

@rawrfishing ended up copping a shimano 6,6 curado rod and a tx3 first baitcaster setup. Had a few birds nests (my fault ) I love how accurate you can be. It probably won't do the big monsters but it will be ample for the majority Murry cod go apeshit keen to catch one on it
Hey man what bait aster reel is that? Ive been looking for some high quality ones instead of the cheap ones that dont cast far!
Daiwa Salamandura Air TW
i love abu garcia reel ❤
Daiwa for the win... And this is a Daiwa reel
I just oiled my baitcaster for the first time and I had it about 2 weeks, when I got done oiling it, it started acting wierd and tried casting right away after oiling it and it would backlash a lot more. I put the tension knob as tight as possible and It couldn’t hold a 1/4oz jig head with a creature bait in place. I turned the knob up all the way that press down the spool release and it would drop fast. Do you know why
The oil likely was a lower viscosity of the stock lube. The bearings spinning easier makes the spool spin faster and even faster start up. Turn up the brakes and or cast softer.
You will find this be the case too if you were to swap your stock bearings to higher end bearings. Imagine that!
You talk facts
Actually, I share strong opinions based on facts
@raWrfishing how does the solo king Acura compare to this? Can it cast a trout magnet or at least 1/16 oz lures?
I dunno the Acura but I have the cast testing video available. Both with stock spool and Roro spool. Check the full casting videos out th-cam.com/video/Fd9dH8Od6H0/w-d-xo.html

Magforce z is as good as dc brakes are. No one else comes close. I'm yet to try lewx paramag brakes but I assume they're just...... decent
Daiwa reels are amazing!
Shimano DC Module is interesting. They bought the module from another company and tuned it for their reel. I think the patent must have expired as there's reels with DC braking now that's not Shimano... We shall see what the other companies has to offer!
just curious but would that be the same result if you did an overhand cast vs a side cast?
The cast will result different for different casting styles. Also power have to play with how much brakes u need as well. I can show you my tuning method if you need, it's on my channel 👊
@@rawrfishing what’s wrong with lil thumb action. Thats going to not let you get a long of a cast.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with using your thumb. What I am showing is the ability to tune your reels so beginners can have fun and slowly back down settings as they train their thumbs. That's a tricky one... You will need not only to press the thumb bar, but also hold the spool down with your thumb. You also need to Feather the spool while the lure is in flight and lastly stop the spool before it hits the water. I am not sure if I can help.
Sorry 🙏
@@rawrfishinghey , thanks for the answer . However im a bit confused now because in the video you showed how to set up the reel so u didnt need to stop the line while the cast and right before the lure hits the water .
So i thought and hoped i only have to press the thumb button right before the cast to give the reel to freely cast the line .
So am i missing something or what? 😅
When i take all the beginning settings and press the brake lever to make a cast . Do i still need to hold / press down on the drum/line for the few seconds until i actually make the cast ?
Or is it completely without thumb and i just press the brake lever right before i cast ?
An explanation would be highly appreciated !
Sincerely Daniel
The setting I have shown are for beginners and the draw back, as many have stated in the comments, is that you will not get good distance. One must train their thumb in order to master the reel for distance and accuracy. Even as portrayed, I still have held the spool with my thumb as I was casting. No thumb mean I did not Feather or stop the spool as the lure flies in the air.
I don't cast nor know If the way u describe would ever work as pressing a button actually takes a lot of movement before the reel disengage a spool. You may even damage the reel by doing the way you have described.
Yes true, to me that there is no distance at all when you cast. Look that spinning reel cast more further.
Distance isn't everything and the amount further is not much more when it comes to UL lures
That’s also a Diawa one of the best reels
Yes, but we can do this on any bc reel that have a braking system

Ultra light rod also? What kind and size?
Yes UL rod and thin line. Sorry Forgot details. Old video.. .. But Full details in the linked related video as it was the fill cast testing session .
Why the high gear ratio?
I like fast reels. I can slowdown myself if needed.
@@rawrfishing okay so just preference. Thought maybe it was something method driven. Like how people say crank baits and spinner lures do best with slower speed.
So smaller lures, can fall fast. Especially with thin lines. This is a finesse reel, so sometimes throwing light lures, you gotta be a bit faster to ensure it stays in the right water column
Ive done this and still prefer to feather ot with my thumb. I can get casts farther and still not birds nest.
Yes, this is for beginners. Read the desc for full details 👍

Why not just use a spinning reel for the ul gear??
Cuz spinning gears don't cast far as ppl claim it to be for UL, making it inefficient for short distance fisheries. It also cause line twists like no tomorrow for slack line fishing, especially with current.
That a bfs setup?
It sure is on an UL rod
depends on the reel

It's probably the same reason why you like to eat your favorite food. You like it so you eat it. I like bfs so I fish it :). It's also a niche that need influencers like me to grow. I aleady have influenced kastking as I have helped developed, test, launch a global marketing campaign for the kastking zephyr line up. It was the first budget bfs reel ever to be released in the US!

Yeah you don't get backlash because the break slows the rotation, you're casting short distances only then.

if you know a bait caster works you don't never need your thumb you must b a beginner all you do is set brake the right and have the right lure weight
Yep.. Thx teacher!
See how fast it slows down that's your tension knob !
Incorrect! I have zero tension. It's all brakes here.
Daiwa uses their zero tension adjustor. It's preset to no tension with barely any side to side movement of the spool. You rely solely on the brakes
No backlash…. But also no casting distance 🤣

What’s the best line to use on a baitcaster for a beginner?
If you are using a standard size baitcasting reel, around size 100, then u can just use 12 or 14 Lb mono. This way u won't break the bank when u birds nest as your practice your thumb skills.
