Ah, Orange. Back in ‘84 we took a coach from N. England to Perpignan. We passed down through northern France and all seemed rather grey. The bus stopped in Orange. There and then, aged 13, I fell for France, and particularly the south. It was the 1000 shades of ochre, the fading, peeling blue, green and amethyst shutters of the houses. It was the insistent thrum of the cicada. It was, well, quite simply, the light and that sense of the exotic for a lad born north of the 55th parallel. It was all this and more. Oblivious, at that age, to the sociopolitical imperfections of the place, my francophilia began and has not subsided since. Orange, my first French love, remains one of my favourites in all France.
Orange… I have such a beautiful memories of this place.
