This is actually a very shallow interpretation of what happened. Recent research reveals those 5 defaults were actually just crises in Spain’s capacity to shoulder its short-term debt that was quickly resolved by adjusting long-term debt. For context, England could only do that by the 1730s. The fact that investors still invested 4 more times after the first default should be telling you why: because Castilian finance was so OP that investors *still gained profit* even when Spain defaulted. It was the Habsburgs that cursed Spain to destitution with wars when it could have been so OP.

And even though the reign of Philip IV was a time of decline, the arts in the country continued to prosper a lot and it is known as the "Golden Century" in Spain, with such figures as Velázquez, Quevedo or Zurbarán.
Charles III is one of the most underrated kings in history imo. Ferdinand and Isabella, yeah easy choice there. Charles V at least got to live out his final years in peace.

I feel like Ferdinand II deserved his own ranking apart from his status as one of the Catholic Monarchs, due to reigning as King of Aragon in his own right and effectively controlling Castile for 12 years following his wife's death. It was *him* and not Philip the Handsome who had declared Joana insane, and it was *him* who governed Castile in her name for nearly the entire time between Isabella's death and his own. Philip's time as king lasted for less than a year, and Charles only took over following Ferdinand's death.
"They completed the Reconquista, established the Spanish inquisition, founded Christopher Columbus voyage and stablished Spain as a major European power." Jesus Christ, these guys truly deserve to be top 1, what a Chad and Chadette lol
they also created the first human rights act called "Leyes de Indias" (Laws of Indias), which basically considered all native americans as spanish citizens, granting their rights and basic liberties.
Isabel I on her own is a complete absolute bamf and Ferdinand recognized his wife was a bamf and was a military and political beast. He even managed Spain for Juana while Charles was still underage and raised Ferdinand I HRE. I love their motto "Tanto Monta" Because there they recognize the equal power of each other and their kingdoms. You should see TVE's Isabel. They show all the battles, maneuvers and political savvy of Isabel and Ferdinand, there is a movie about Juana and there is also a sequel series about Charles which details all the conflicts and political intrigue in their lives as well. One of the best historical series I have ever seen a lot of the scenes and seem like out of the pages of history and paintings while using actual historical spots. One of the scenes I was shaken by the most is the one where Juana is crying over Philip which looks just like the painting. Just a fan.
The TV series doesn’t really capture everything, which is exactly why the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella was utterly phenomenal. They were scheming and coming from all sides lmao that historians keep unearthing all the Catholic Monarchs’ political tactics and strategy.
As a fun fact about Carlos IV you can see in the painting portaying him and the Royal family he is not centered, the center of the painting is completly empty and the colsest person to the center is not even him, but the queen. Is just *chef kiss*

By Spanish standards that seems pretty good

It's an awesome name! >philip II defaulted on his debts 5 times
absolute sigma male grindset
This is actually a very shallow interpretation of what happened. Recent research reveals those 5 defaults were actually just crises in Spain’s capacity to shoulder its short-term debt that was quickly resolved by adjusting long-term debt. For context, England could only do that by the 1730s. The fact that investors still invested 4 more times after the first default should be telling you why: because Castilian finance was so OP that investors *still gained profit* even when Spain defaulted. It was the Habsburgs that cursed Spain to destitution with wars when it could have been so OP.

He even managed Spain for Juana while Charles was still underage and raised Ferdinand I HRE. I love their motto "Tanto Monta" Because there they recognize the equal power of each other and their kingdoms. You should see TVE's Isabel. Ya Mercedes, Ya Mercedes, muerta está, que yo la vi

Her sister and many others saw the signs that the Queen was still alive, but Ferdinand told them to cut her open and get the baby inside out of her. She let out a scream during the surgery and died for real.
Great video by the way, do Scottish kings next please!

It is known here in Spain that in his lasts years Philip the V was jumping around the palace like a frog
U should rank the Plantagenets
The story about Joanna being tortured by her mother is an English mistranslation of a letter from Cardinal Cisneros. Cardinal Cisneros wrote 'dar cuerda' which in Spanish means 'to wound up' for talking.
The culprit of this mistranslation was Bergenroth. Spanish scholars that read the original document argue that he is wrong.
Idea: do the Holy Roman Emperors or just the Habsburg rulers of Austria next
I am a Basque histoy student and I have to say that it is a really good ranking. The biggest mistake for me it's to have put Joanna I, but as you have remarked that she did not have any effective power it is not a big issue. Perhaps, from a Spanish perspective it is difficult to place Phillip IV so high as during its reign the Hispanic Monarchy officially lost its European hegemony in favor of France because of the Peace of Wesphalia.
The fact that it took so long to get to the chaos that was Isabella II says a lot. I wholeheartedly agree, though.
As Spaniard, 100% agree with the list (particularly with the top4)
By the way, funny note about the German candidate that wasn't chosen (in favour of Amadeo). His house was teh Hozernhollen-Sigmariten, quite hard to pronounce for the locals, so the Spanish people called him instead "OleOle-SiMeEligen" ("Ole ole - If I get chosen)
wow i just realized that I actually learned all of this in school, also, the guy who just gave up is so mee
Nice video! I've got an idea for a video: Top Castillian Kings (Hope to see Alfonso The Wise on top)
The very underrated movie History of the World Pt.1, "the peasants are revolting". Louis, "your telling me".
The painting of little charles must be the most scary thing I have ever seen.
You should do more ranking of monarchs around the world
An interesting thing is that Felipe IV was very interesed in art and promoted it in all the kingdom. He was a huge fan of Velazquez and Rubens.
Pd:the war of the invencible armada was actually won by the spanish
Strange, Spectrum uses Juan and Alfonso but then also Charles and Philip.
Espanglish
@@GarfieldRex Ugh, that's what I end up doing & I hate it! I draw family trees & end up with some Felipes & some Philips :D I _think_ I should use the correct variants of names instead of the Anglicised ones, & there are a few like Juana of Castile that are stuck in my head in their native form- I _cannot_ call her Joanna- but things written in English generally use Anglicised names so it's hard to change & remember.
I said I was never gonna timeline the Western or Eastern Roman Emperors? Well, nobody said anything about Spanish monarchs. So...
Ferdinand II and Isabella I 15:08

Charles II 1:26
Phillip V 10:36
Louis 3:18
Ferdinand VII 9:52

Alfonso XII 9:26
Alfonso XIII 2:44
No one is talking about Luis I. Imagine his pain of dying from a young age, before reaching adult. It's kind of sad that he died of smallpox.
People usually ignore him because he did nothing and lasted less than a year and since his reign is between the two reigns of his father Philip, people pretend that he never existed.
Nice list of the best Spanish Kings, The Spanish and British monarchies still exist today, the Portuguese monarchy no longer exists. Nice to learn after the unification of Spain it still felt that Spain was divided into kingdoms. There is an ancient Peruvian painting that shows the Inca kings and the Spanish kings that show Carlos Quinto aka Charles V as a Black man, King Phillip II is shown as a Mulato.
Sad "Deus Pátria Rei" playing in the background
F for the Portuguese monarchs, they are missed
@@riograndedosulball248 Unbeknownst to everyone D. Duarte Pio is preparing a comeback. Hahaha
I like how the Spanish Empire and Roman Empire both began with mostly strong and competent rulers.
Charles II wasn´t a good king on his own but he sticked with his father´s assistants to help him rule and showed up to be fairly competent. Until his death and the succession war his government was pretty good in fact.
Actually Charles II reign was one of regeneration, military reformation and economic recuperation. He surrounded himself with excellent advisors. He was a great and competent king.
Please can you do ranking the French kings in the future
cool video I would really love to see one about Poland monarchs
I feel like many of the Spanish Monarchs' lives could be made into melodramatic telenovelas, and you wouldn't even know that those are real lives led by real people.
I'm a simple man. I see this video I click on it. French and Holy Roman Empire next please 🙏
A video on the royal dynasties of the Aztecs, Incas and Mayans would be nice.
Objectively Phillip II is arguably one of the top five greatest monarchs in the history of mankind
I want him to cover the French kings, he's already went over the ones in my country (England). I disagree with some of his placements on the video with the King's and Queens of my country however its his opinion and I respect that, thank you for the videos too mate they are really good buddy 👍👏😀
Man my guy Queen Isabella II gotta have a break, Spain was literally breaking at its own as shown by her successor's immediate resignation
I would suggest trying to do videos on the separate kingdoms before they United into Spain... but that may be a little difficult seeing as how some of the kings, there's very little records of... they call it the dark ages for a reason...
