First off, I'm a 30+ year experienced recording engineer. This is by far one of the BEST explanation videos on compression/compressors. A compressor is an amplitude/volume attenuation system. In order that music or sound in general be able to be used across many types of system, you need to have it where because its played on say a cellphone vs a club vs a car/vehicle that the individual sounds can be played and still be heard no matter which system plays them. So the parts that are really loud are attenuated or reduced while the other parts are raised in volume. Compressors can alter the intensity of some instruments while bringing others up that you wanted further down in the mix, but the purpose is to make it where overall all of the detail of the entire song can be heard. Compressors, unlike limiters which create a hard ceiling where if the amplitude goes above a set level, its cut or clipped, have a soft ceiling. Sounds are allowed to go above the set level, but they are cut. Compressors will generally have three primary settings. *1.* - The amplitude level you're setting *2.* - The amount of attenuation. *3.* - Speed at which the attenuation happens.
I didn't quite understand compressing sounds much back then but when I watched this, I've learned a lesson. Here's me realizing or either remembering myself with the limiter overcompressing much or less from the visual itself. This was an extremely helpful for me and now I understood about compression, my next goal is mastering by myself which will have a long journey but I hope everyone who watches this learned a lesson unless whoever already learned about it. I'm pretty much a silent watcher but hey! your channel really helps me especially from the word improvement and again thanks for everything!

amazing vid - i'm a beginner and compression is definitely one of the hardest things to wrap my head around. likely another tip is to use a good pair of headphones to hear the maximum amount of detail when comparing A/B to help make the best decision - that goes for watching any instructional vid as well so you can hear and understand the results better

Amazing!!!! Guys I ahve taken the Mixing course and I am in the beginning of Mastering course. He uses compression almost %100 LOL. Jokes aside he always has a point to use a compression. That is the key!
if you use maximus and change the preset to tape limiter it has a built in vizual compressor built in so you can really see and feel what u want it to be

This FL limiter/compressor is so helpful because it gives you visual feedback. I like dynamics. And I try to preserve as much as I can so I use the FL limiter to observe the picks on the master channel. Usually by the time I am done with mixing there isn't too much to trim. I tried the loudness war. But when you push the mix too much closer to digital distortion sound change. It's especially annoying on the lead instruments. What's the point of being loud if things sound terrible. I even listened to some country song where the guitar was so destroyed by being pushed too far in was cutting like a knife. Than I was thinking "wow country is in the loudness war too?" I notice it sounds more and more like certain pop music but sounding like black metal kinda harsh? It's funny how things work.
So the trick here is how u set the threshold for the desired effect from the attack and release settings...Thank you..🙏🏽🙏🏽💯💯💯💯This is awesome..🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Good video. Still having trouble understanding ATTACK. It seems that even at highly delayed setting, the sound was still being affected. I thought at a highly delayed setting, nothing would be affected but in the display, you can clearly see sounds being attenuated even at the beginning of the play of the sound. Why?
When I was messing with compressor I figured it can be used as attack pedal. Than I felt stupid because I actually bought attack pedal. Fortunately wasn't expensive pedal. If I can go back in time I would probably not repeat the same mistakes. I would know slightly better what and when to do. But when DAWS appeared I was completely lost. After trying few I just stuck to FL. And now when they have 50% off on upgrade I was convinced I am just going to stick to FL for life or at least until something bad happen.

With attack we just delayed the effect by 100ms, if you would set it to like 1000ms that's maybe when the sound wouldn't be affected.
