- Part two of the massive trip to Daylesford, Castlemaine, Bendigo and Kangaroo Flat. I had heard there were a lot of thrift shops around here so we drove for about 2 1/2 hours. I hope you enjoy. Please subscribe so that I get monetized and buy cat food.

Op shops are big buisness now and are not aimed towards helping or giving cheaper opportunities to people who are honestly struggling. I left my residence due to family domestic violence and was sleeping in my vehicle until i got everything sorted and and could move my possesions in a supervised safe non violent way because i was over the constant bulldust so i straight away went to a local op shop wont name names but i informed them of my situation and asked if they could just do their best price on all the essentials bedding etc. Anyway the price they gave me seemed expensive so i went to big w and bought all the things i needed brand new for $40 less than what the op shop wanted for second hand goods. I think the only opportunity that day was the opportunity the op shop manager saw in taking advantage of me in my moment of desperate need for essentials. I used to do every salvo collection day i could raising money in the past but after the way they chose to allocate money raised for bushfire victims to other things than the money was originally donated to made me realise that donating to these companies isnt what it used to be and the best way to help those in need is to get out there and help otherwise corporations will use your good will to their own benefit first and formost. It really is disgusting.
I know that older man in Golden Square Salvos Thrift - he’s a collector/reseller himself & hates when other resellers find something he’s missed! He’s always grumpy.

My rule of thumb if there’s any rude staff, or no customer service is to not buy a thing.
I agree, I definitely don't need mood lighting, colour coordinated racks and 'boutique' shop fittings in a thrift store. I like a rummage and fair prices and a bonus for a genuine smile from the employees.
I had a run in once with an Op Shop manager when I asked if I could open their taped lego box. They expected someone to pay $35 for a box of stuff rattling around. It was a retired set but still that's a lot of money to buy blind. OTL

I'm with you flipper, these shops are too expensive and I'm assuming all stock was or is donated originally not to mention people who work in these stores are volunteers, not all.
I agree! Even too expensive for the families in need. 90% of my money is to keep a roof over my head on age pension and very rarely afford anything at the op shops these days

Hey from Bendigo.....😊 just stumbled across this...thought you gave a very accurate account of the Bendigo Op Shops...I don't go to the Salvos Thrift anymore because of that grumpy manager...im pretty sure he hates resellers!!!! I'm so disappointed with the Bendigo Oppies now, overpriced and a lot of filthy, broken rubbish....ive started taking the train to Melbourne and going back to Savers. Like you my love is books...I too wanted my own little bookshop, but alas I sell my books on Ebay instead...18 years this year...anyway glad I have discovered your channel thanks so much 😊
This makes me so happy Allison. Thats my take on it too. I have a bookshop just not bricks and mortar. That manager was not pleasant and more to the point he was rude to my Allison for no reason. Say what you want to me but not her if you get what I mean. I'm so glad you commented.
Hate it when vinnies splits up sets to put them in different coloured shelves, you have to check everywhere for the rest of the set.
I decided to donate some of my time to my local OP Shop to help my community l didn’t stay there long…especially when I noticed the helpers and the manager taking bags of stuff to their cars at the end of the day. Very disappointed.😮
I bought a heap of Fowlers Vacola Jars from Salvos in Ballarat awhile ago they were $2bucks each and the old dude at the counter said oh someone’s mis priced them and I said that’s all they’re worth what is it with people that work in these stores like it’s none of there concern just sell the bloody stuff..lol..I don’t get it.
Charity shops are over the top these day's. I go to independent.
That Bendigo vines looks the same as it did in 95. I used to score some cool clothes there back in the 90's. But the 90's was great for clothes, heaps of 60's and 70's stuff.
It's funny to me that a flipper is complaining about high prices. The reason the prices are high is because of the flippers. Charity shops are for people that can't afford to shop at retail stores

Op shops profits are to help those who need help in various ways. They are a shop for anyone to purchase from.
@@nicholewhiteside9147 I give 4 days a week to the salvos I work with a major his son is in the top 5 head up salvos Australia. Me and the major has an old van we use to move house for people, run around to many different shops and bakeries collecting food to then delivering to people who need help.
I can 100% tell you that
1. Prices went up to stop resellers.
2. Op shop = a place for people that can not afford retail
A place for people that have issues in the work place and need a different role in life (paid workers) in many forms
A place for people that are retired and looking to give back and keep active (volunteers) in many forms
At the end of the it's your moral and values not mine.
I just think it's important to see it as it is.

Cheaper the better, and stock move through rate, vinnies that are good I find almost have full rotation of stock pretty much monthly and they send old clothes off to be turned into rugs, old drab jackets and jeans can have a second life as a rug, it’s sad when the whole shop is full of sub par clothing and bad prices, and it’s always quiet because even locals know it’s no good
After closing my footwear business I donated my leftover stock to a local charity store - I won't say the name as they started with an S. I was selling these shoes for $40 delivered (Nursing Shoes) then to see them for sale for $50 the next week. I then donated all the remaining shoes to Nursing homes. I wanted to give them to the needy or lower income workers - but will never donate products again.
Op shops have the most ridiculous prices these days..
It’s all about the money..
I’ve worked in oppies volunteering and the best ones operate on the principle of abundance.. the more you give the more you get.. for goodness sake it’s all donated and turnover is important to customers who frequent the same stores.. who wants to see the same shit on the shelves every time.. 5$ bag sales are a way of clearing out stock to make room for more.. people come back for cheap prices.. we priced kids clothes cheaper to help families out.. school and community oppies were the best value for money..
The big name shops are all about the money and I won’t go to them for clothes anymore when I can get them online new for less.. feel free to share .. all the best mate and carn ’ the mighty Cats ..😁
I avoid the big ones now and only go to community op shops. I do have my favourite salvos but even they are getting a bit pricey
About had enough of op shops. The greed, laziness, and bloody mindedness of the vast majority of them really gives me the shits. That's why I mostly just stick with Savers these days.
It will be a while till it comes out but I recently filmed visiting four Savers in a day - exhausting but fun. Thanks mate.
I love going to recycling centres or tip shops, they are more of the rummaging type places, there prices are always so much lower than op shops even though they are for profit organisations.

All of the oppies here in regional SA are run by lovely elderly volunteers. I don't go in much, but they're usually good for a chinwag.
That's where the best bargains are to be found.
Yes you need to do a lego video, i have a ridiculous amount myself, love buying and selling it but also collecting it, sadly most of mine is in the shed as ive run out of room, lmao. only lego collectors will know the pain of that
We collect Dr Seuss, berenstain bears and Shirley barber books for our kids! They love them and they were favs when I was growing up. The Shirley barber books sell really well for me at the moment!! She died earlier this year.
One of my fav books as a kid was by Richard scarry so I’ve started looking out for them 😊 it’s been so fun selling books in my eBay store! I have my librarian mum to thanks for that! She used to drive the Golden Plains mobile library so she has done a brilliant job of making books a huge part of our kids lives. ❤

I'm glad I wasn't the only one upset by that. Not a good look at all.
I volunteered at a Salvos in Canberra and the real 'treasures' (collectibles) were out the back where they receive the goods and sort them. The manager was a hoarder who didn't want the public to buy the cool stuff. Shame.

They are not supposed to, believe me. The stuff is meant to go out for the public and if it doesn’t sell then the staff can go and buy it, I know they never do that though. They are just greedy so and so’s now.
Tired now of seeing sweat marks, pilling1, stains, missing buttons and broken zips. Used to rely on op shops for clothes as a pensioner, now the products are in worse condition and 3 times the price.

I enjoyed watching the video. I love the Lego head, I haven’t seen any around for ages. The op shops around me aren’t particularly friendly so I’m in and out pretty quickly. They like to colour co-ordinate and I can’t stand that.
The recycle warehouse on Furner Ave is worth checking out. The vast majority of stuff is too expensive but i find cool bargains in there.

Hey mate, great video. Bendigo is my hometown. Recently moved up to the Gold Coast with the flipper gang. Bendigo has some good op shops, unfortunately most of them are disappointing. I have a few gems in my back pocket though. Great vid mate.

I went into salves on princess highway . Got alfred meakon pricess style art deco bowl with lid. Bowl alone is roughly $135 to $185. This one still had lid .bought it for $15
Salvos have gotten horrible with the kids toys my sister and I went to the one In Drysdale to get some toys for my niece and newphew for the summer holidays. They were so high up on shelves so u couldn’t reach them even my husband who’s just over 6 ft could on reach the bottom shelf they had Kmart things brand new with tags higher priced than the discount price on the tag.
It’s sad that op shops have lost what they are about! I volunteer at a local one here in Terang Victoria all our profits go back into the community no paid staff. I do think some of our stuff is too pricey but at least it’s going into our community.
I'll have to hit it up! Show it in a good light. They just moved location in Drysdale. I don't like it very much it looks too curated.

@@geelong-flipper wow 😮 omg 😧 that’s so sad 😭 the little one that’s there is good as far as I remember I can’t remember what it’s called but it’s definitely reminded me of the little old op shops which aren’t so cookie cutter now. I lived in Geelong up until 6 years ago I actually worked as a casual for the brotherhood of st Laurence in grovedale for a few years until I moved and was a volunteer there for many years before. Just before I left it just made me depressed the prices on donated stuff. To pay the ceos not the staff who actually work their asses off. And it’s different with stores that don’t have there stuff donated. I now volunteer in Terang and all our profits go to our community we have no paid staff and I enjoy it. And most of these stuff is cheap clothes like $1 and $2 and books from 50c to $3.
We do have some stuff a little pricey. But even then when you know it’s 100% going back to the community who donated it just think it’s better.
Not sure if you've been to the Brotherhood of St Lawerence shop in Belmont High Street. Went there last week and found heaps of bargains. Books .50 to $3
Games were $1 each. Found 3 Mario wii games that went well. Lady told me the games just went out. But heaps of pretty well priced stuff. Will defs head back in the future.
Yeah I live just around the corner from that one. Nice shop but heavily curated and I believe a lot of the staff are sellers. Good for them just means what they don’t want is heavily marked up. Say hello of you see me in there
i loved op shop but now when they found out they could make money from all the stuff ,its sad u could get stuff for a great price ,cheep but now they put the prices up they think people all people r going to sell them for a lot of money ,i buy because i like old stuff,and books i love books and when ifinish with the book i give it away.

I dont see the issue of prices being bumped up for shoes. Selling say (rrp $100+) nike runners for $20-25ish seems fair to me.
I know people say its meant to be an "op shop" so they expect piss cheap prices for the less fortunate. But the problem is, people took that as an "opportunity" to resell them for more. So the "poor" people who wanted nikes for a cheaper price wouldnt be getting them anyways because the reseller would buy up an $8 pair of nikes and sell them for $60+.
Same goes for toys. Isnt it better to sell a pokemon toy to a single mother for $6 whose kid will play with it. Rather than haggling with a reseller who is trying to low ball for $1-2 so they can resell it to someone for $20.
Which is more ethical 🤷♂️

Thing is. Lower prices work if everyone just bought for personal use. People would leave behind stuff they don't intend on using or needing.
Problem is resellers TAKE AWAY that aspect of op shopping where they see a $2 item or $5 pair of shoes as an opportunity to make waaaay bigger profit which takes away from the single mother or other people who shop at those places to look for things they will actually use (and not sell)
