  • On Monday, July 21, 2008, the Milwaukee chapter of the University of Notre Dame Alumni Club hosted its 8th annual golf outing and dinner benefiting the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation. The head Notre Dame football coach from 1964-74, Parseghian led his teams to the consensus national championship in both 1966 and 1973. The Milwaukee event was headlined by Irish quarterback from 1966-68, Terry Hanratty, whose image adorned the cover of the October 28, 1966 edition of Time Magazine, and was a three-time finalist for the Heisman Trophy. About $25,000 were raised for the APMRF's work to find a cure for Niemann Pick-C, a terminal disease that claimed the lives of three of Ara's grandchildren. More than 94 percent of all money raised goes directly to research into a cure for NP-C.

My favorite memories of watching football when I first got interested in the 60's was watching Terry Hanratty throwing the pass to Jim Seymour. I always wondered afterwards what ever happened to Jim because I never heard of him. I finally learned he went into the armed forces. I sure do miss those days.

I remember Terry very well. He and Jim Seymour came to be known as, "Mr. Fling to Mr. Cling."

Terry Hanratty, I had a crush on him when I watched him play for ND when I was a kid. Met him in Shawn's restaurant in Connectcut years later and told him so. He's still my hero!

The radio station in my hometown carried the Notre Dame games in 1964 and 65, and I became a big fan of Bill Wolski. I had watched the Butler, Pennsylvania Golden Tornado team, led by Terry, whip my New Castle Red Hurricanes, so I was a little sore at him. Then he starts against Purdue as a sophomore. I was like, "what's he doing throwin' the ball, all he ever did at Butler was hand off to Bill and Terry Rettig!" I became a big fan of Terry's, although truth be told, I was a bigger fan of Nick Eddy. Sadly, I learned that Bill Wolski died far too young (age 61) in 2006. BTW, Terry's Butler team played in the same conference with schools that produced NFL players like Mike Ditka, Ty Law, Darrell Revis, Tony Dorsett, Randy Holloway, Joe Namath, Bruce Clark, and Malik Hooker, among many others. I moved to Ohio and fell in love with Woody Hayes' super sophomore team of 1968 that defeated O.J. Simpson's USC team for the National Championship and have been a Buckeye fan ever since, but my fondness for the Ara-led Fighting Irish stays with me forever.
