Magnets rock. I make tarp attachments to the outside of my Toyota Sienna minivan for instant awnings.

wonder if a few of those bigger magnets would safely hold a solid frame solar panel on a van roof without it being ripped off while moving ?

Not the ones I have....I am not sure what power magnet would be required to handles something to like that.. I use them for cable control, canvas mounting and maybe a few camera mountings. That would be very unlikely to work!!!
