When only radio ruled the air, I used to listen folk songs. But whenever the song "Mitti Da Bawa" came, I would see tears welling down the cheeks of my mother. At that I would wonder but could not make any head or tail of her reaction to this song. Today Arif brought those long lost memories back. After listening to Arif again and again, I still could not figure out what had earlier made my mother so emotional because none of Arif's audience appeared sad.
Based on a poem by Shiv Kumar Batalvi, this song is about a woman who yearns for a child of her own. Her husband is away for long periods. She makes a clay doll that she treats as her child, singing it this lullaby. She sings that her child doesn't cry nor walk nor ask her for anything. She also realizes her jealousy toward other women who she sees happily playing with their children.
Such a soulful voice and lyrics, Tears in my eyes while listening to his first song. I used to listen growing up back in the 90s. I wish we could do more to preserve our beautiful culture of our Pakistan and especially of Punjab--- We should have our folk culture academies to take advantage of the talent of this treasure to be transferred to the next generation.
