Love the Alphonso Johnson solo catalogue and of course his playing with Cobham / Duke , take it you have the Montreux Summit series and the awesome Aliveamutherforya with Cobham and Scofield . There is another Japan-only Vitous album called Purple that had Vitous, Cobham on the drums, Zawinul on a couple of tracks and John McLaughlin on one as well. Pretty good album. Not exactly cheap heat but well worth seeking out and not ridiculously expensive. I had to get that David Pritchard album playing in the background, sounds excellent. Definitely cheap heat. Found one copy in the UK for just £5. Thanks again for turning us all on to some of these lesser known gems.
I have “Purple” which was definitely a ‘grail’ for me pre-Internet. Also not cheap, unfortunately… unless you get lucky like I did. It’s a great Lp - kind of mellow & introspective - & compares favorably with Larry Coryell’s “Spaces” and a couple tracks (outtakes from ‘Spaces’) on “Planet End” - both of which are cheap. Glad you dug the Pritchard!!! Get “Time & Space” by Contraband - which features Pritchard & Charles Oreña - if you don’t already have it!!!
That Zawinul is a classic. That was my first record of his ever brought into my collection. My introduction to Miroslav stuff outside of Weather Report was the record he did with Jan Garbarek "Atmos". Yesterdays Dreams is just amazing... the line-up always just blew me away. Larry Youngs Fuel is something a lot of people miss, and what they miss is Larry Young himself. That man is credited as being the "Father" of modal Jazz. He is a fantastically UNDERRATED artist and he is definitely an icon. Great video Dave - TONE

Paused the video just to say I bought that light year album about a week Ago it is smoking! I like to think of the band as light year and the album as david prichard cuz it’s more prog
The Zawinul is epic. First time I spun my copy I flipped the record to play His Last Journey which is about Joe’s Grandfather’s funeral in the Austrian mountains. I look up at the tv and Rick Steves is literally in the Austrian mountains. Crazy.
That Zawinul is one of my all time favorites. Vitous is awesome. Cheap Heat is the best series.
