That is so great, such an awesome guy for giving you guys a break... I hope he's alive and well when you do get the boat into the water... And then take him for a ride on it..
What a beautiful old machine! back in the day, a company I worked for as a cabinetmaker had all old machines like that. They were HUGE and were originally belt driven from an overhead system, but were converted in like the 1920's or so. The motors were like 5 horsepower but were the size of a mini-fridge. Very ornate cast iron machines with Babbitt bearings still doing the job after 100+ years. Great find and great guy to buy it from!
I just found you guys..... cue binge watching!!!!! I've been following a rebuild happening here in the Pacific Northwest of an old fishing boat, the Western Flyer. Sometimes TH-cam's suggestions are spot on. This is one of those times. I could jump to the end.... but where's the fun in that? Three years of catching up to do, and I get to see this old man helping you one your way. I salute you Bruce!
Fabulous. What a great guy Bruce is. One of the best things that will come out of this project asides the boat will be the community you gather around you. When I was doing my fishing had lots of visitors in the boatyard, some positive, some negative but I always regret not having a visitors book so that each visitor could sign it, leave contact details and a comment. Might be something to consider as it would be an amazing record to look back on. Andy
Both Bruce's!!! Band saw Bruce and Boat Bruce! (former owner of Victoria) We just might take that suggestion, it would be a cool thing to have and easily enough accomplished. We might need more than 1! ha! The best part so far has been the community, we are continuously blown away by folks support, generosity and on occasion their negativity but then it's just fun showing them the way =) We have met so many truly generous, knowledgeable, kind... plain old top shelf quality humans so far and it's only the start. They not only make our dream possible but they make it infinitely more enjoyable!
I must admit I did get tired of some of the questions being asked while I did up my boat. I ended up putting a sign out saying, Yes it is going to take a long time. No, I have no idea when she will be finished. Yes she is going to cost a lot of money but No, I have no idea how much. Yes, it is a big job and I could have bought one ready to go but I am enjoying the ride... the nice visitors got a tour the others were ignored...I got pretty good at spotting them a mile off. Andy
Binge watching all your vids since SV Seeker sent me here. Amazing project and I’m thoroughly enjoying all your cleverness and energy. I reckon Abom79 would love to have a go at restoring this baby. Just looking at the upcoming vids and I do see a restoration of this bandsaw. Can’t wait to see that next. Awesome effort guys and so nice to see somewhat forgotten skills re emerge. Your adventure is a lot like the restoration of Tallyho (Sampson Boat Co (?))
Thanks! Yeah us and Leo are on very similar yet very different adventures! Hopefully Arabella, Seeker, and Tallyho can tie up somewhere together when we are all on the water, would be on hell of a raft up! =)
Hi, I recently found your channel through SV seeker and have been catching up with your videos. It was nice seeing that man give you the discount. Regardless of it's looks usually older machines where much better built and most that I have come across are all repairable.
She has cleaned up quite well! Bruce is indeed a top shelf human, super nice guy! As is Doug, he has sent quite a few folks our way. Looking forward to crossing wakes with him in a few years.
Enjoyed the video thanks, hey what a col guy giving you money back and intrested in the project love people like that the world needs more of them, not to mention the bandsaw mmm i do like old machines
OMG! The old Frank Clement company, I know where the building was that used to make machines in Rochester. I live not far from Rochester, and like Cleveland and Cincinnati Ohio, Rochester was once famous for making wood and metal working machinery. It's good to see this old saw is still doing what it was made to do!
Wow! What a find. I would love to find an old ships saw like that. Even in the condition she was in, that was a find of a lifetime. Once your done with her, let me know! I Have future upcoming projects that I will need to find one for. Building a 36ish ft sailboat, a cabin, kayaks, and furniture to fill the cabin. Ya gotta have dreams right? Lol
It's not technically a ships saw since the table tilts and not the wheel/blade assembly but the size is about right! They are out there, we see them somewhat often for sale on Craigslist. Everyone needs dreams! The trick is to really pursue them!
Nice saw. It would have been a good idea to remove the table before the move. If there is a weak link on any big old bandsaw, it is the table trunnion, especially one piece trunnions such as your American has. (The arc shape part the table bolts to and tilts). Many get busted while muscle-ing the saw around by the table, and broken cast iron is difficult to repair. And don't sit on the table ! ! Glad you got it home safe.
I'm 6 months late but this is the best I got. th-cam.com/video/pxLOlfp51dc/w-d-xo.html I'm thinking it's from the same guy but a different song unless our guys edited this one because it sounds just slightly different.
I would have let you have my Moak 36" for free, I advertised it and no takers, so I parted some of it out... I'm in Tucson AZ so it would have been a trip for you!
That would have been a long trip! We did have a friend mail 75 pounds of lead from Louisiana to us. Gotta love flat rate boxes! The post office was not terribly impressed. hahaha
Whats does this bandsaw bring to you that your log saw does not? I'm more into medieval green wood working, so my tool knowledge doesnt go far past the adze😅 saws were expensive in medieval times so in keeping with tradition I try not to use saws at all, let alone bandsaws.
We just borrowed the sawmill, we don't actually own one. The bandsaw is much more versatile that the sawmill, the mill can only cut a straight line, the bandsaw can do that as well as curves but can't effectively mill a big log.
Nice saw, This will be the boat that the community built, just like SV seeker is the boat that the internet built, nice to see people out there that have the balls to take on a project like this, would it not of been cheaper to build the boat in a ship building yard in indonesia, where the wood would be allot cheaper with cheap labour? you could pay 100 coolies $5 bucks a day to chop them tree timbers up, It is great to see them build a 70 ft boat with just a hammer, pencil, string and axe and the famous safety flipflops? keep up the good work, its looking good so far ;)
We hope it's the boat the community built, so far she is! We are the loons that started but the help that has literally already come from all over the world is amazing! Not to mention all the local help on close to a weekly basis. We are very fortunate guys! It might have been, we'll never know =) Part of the dream is doing it on Steve's family's land with the trees that have been growing there for generations. Just don't have the same ties to Indonesia. The flip flop adze, chainsaw work... is amazing and terrifying!
Hell of a good guy, that Marine. Most veterans are good guys. I try to be until someone gives me a damn good reason not to be. I have a shirt that says: "Don't take my PEACEFUL nature to mean that I've forgotten how to be VIOLENT". I like the shirt. I wear it with the mentality that me being peaceful is a personal choice. Awesome deal and experience. Can't wait to see that old dinosaur cutting some new boat pieces.
We have found being nice usually gets you a lot farther but you also can't let yourself be pushed around. There will be plenty of footage of the old saw slicing and dicing some oak soon.
Must have been hungry at the time =) Between working, building, shooting video and editing we have four full time jobs and two people. Sometimes things slip through the cracks! Thanks for letting us know!
I always get this happy flutter in my chest every time Rochester NY is mentioned. I love where I grew up and hope to move back after college.
I bet that old ship saw looks great when you get it all cleaned up!
That saw is frickin sweet! I bet Bruce will be able to do more than just look at Arabella when you guys finish! What a lucky guy!
That is so great, such an awesome guy for giving you guys a break... I hope he's alive and well when you do get the boat into the water... And then take him for a ride on it..
I've said it before but this build touches peoples soul.
What a cool guy man. I love when people are actually good to each other. Bruce, you're awesome bro!
We could not agree more!
Outstanding man! Way to go Marine.
We have had a couple Marines help us out so far, Bruce (bandsaw), Tom (heavy equipment) and Steve (sawmill).

Nice bandsaw for building a boat.
Cool video. I'm dropping a comment since the boat is almost done...
🙌

@@AcornToArabella thank you very much! Shoes, socks, or barefoot?

Old machines are awesome.
People like the gentleman who sold you the saw restore my faith in humanity.
We feel the same and have been fortunate to meet a few along this journey so far.
What a really nice guy
Nice restoration on the BBB!

She's a beaut and a cornerstone of the build. We have met quite a few very generous people so far. Two of which have been named Bruce!
Thanks for the unintended shout-out to my alma-mater "Clemson"...

I live not far from Rochester, and like Cleveland and Cincinnati Ohio, Rochester was once famous for making wood and metal working machinery. We love the saw, it's one of the corner stones of the build!

I thought of that right after I hit the post button. Still love those old told like that. Made with pride, made to last.
Indeed! The whole frame is one hunk of cast iron that easily weights 1,000 pounds. A new saw made that way would cost a fortune!
Awesome price! Great guy
What a nice guy was that Marine Corps guy.
this is incredible
What a score.
Did the gentleman get to see the boat in the water yet?
Did that big kind fellow make it to the launch?
So...where is the video of this being restored?
Nice saw. It would have been a good idea to remove the table before the move. Glad you got it home safe.
Thanks for the tip and we don't regularly sit on the table, we just did that for the picture .
Very cool guy!!
Respect
can someone say what the song was at 6:00
? it is really beautiful.. different.
I'm 6 months late but this is the best I got.

That is the ideal of an enlightened society. I love civilisation.

Lumba. That sounded Bostonian didn't it? :)
I think you should name the saw "Bruce"
Whats does this bandsaw bring to you that your log saw does not? I'm more into medieval green wood working, so my tool knowledge doesnt go far past the adze😅 saws were expensive in medieval times so in keeping with tradition I try not to use saws at all, let alone bandsaws.

Look how bent the plywood is.

Go to owwm.org and / or vintagemachinery.org for information on that saw.
We went to Vintage Machinery but did not find owwm, we will have to check that out. Thanks for the resources!
I think you will be happy when you visit.
they really don't make gear like that anymore. Shame really.
It's true, that is why it's so important to take care of them and make sure they last as long as they can. Once gone they will never be rebuilt.
restoration not restauration.Lol
Must have been hungry at the time =)
Between working, building, shooting video and editing we have four full time jobs and two people. Sometimes things slip through the cracks! Thanks for letting us know!
I'm am a very 3D person, and I can't spell anything. Cheers to all of us "advanced" learners😊😊😊
man the boat house is so empty!!! Its amazing to see how far arabella has come in 2 years
