to the kindest eyes that I've ever seen - lyrics are so touching and deep. My most favorite song in the world. I am so lucky that the Philippines was really into New Wave during the 80s or I wouldn't have known these fantastic UK bands that didn't make it big to the music industry.

im from the philippines, this band and this particular song is embedded in my heart forever since the time i heard it on the radio year 1988, and i was only 14 yrs old.
The full version was the first Chameleons' song I had ever heard, well over 30 years ago on a December night while making a mix tape. Fittingly, I find myself back here on a December night, and this song takes me back to that simple memory.
This song is effortlessly beautiful and bittersweet. What a masterpiece. I am so grateful it came into my life. Why are we young for such a short amount of time? Why does life seem to pick up the pace as we grow older?
Sonny Reyes no way.. 70s music was the best.. Far FAR more sophisticated and classy than the 80s, which was mostly trashy and frivolous... Except THIS wonderful band of course, and a handful of others..
I love the music of the 70s and absolutely adore 80s music....I guess it matters when you came of age. I was 8 when the 70s ended and 18 when the 80s concluded.
I lost my childhood/teenage/ young adult dog late last year. I always think of her now when I hear this song. Rest easy girl, god knows you deserve it. Always in my heart.
30 years on from first seeing them live, Tears hasn't diminished. My personal understanding of it has altered over the years but it always grabs me musically and lyrically. Few bands then and ever since have close to what The Chameleons achieved. They never competed in the fame battle, and won the integrity war. Thank you for the double song posting.
It has rained too much since the day I first heard this song. Incomparable beauty, a timeless preciousness that continues with the same strength and sweet sadness
uncertainty makes man worry... I loved this song it reflects the true situation where one has to face the world of uncertainties... only to find out that there ls no really such thing as "COINCIDENCE" ..we make choices and what we are now are the consequences of our choices...
I was brought up listening to this album as a baby, my dad has good music taste, I love the band and their cover art! Soul in isolation, swamp thing, tears and Caution are my favs 🖤
I've always loved the alternate version of Tears the most because of its climactic final verse. Mark Burgess' lyrics are among the finest I've ever heard, anywhere - soulfully plaintive, touchingly brilliant and somehow hopeful all at once - I consider myself forever fortunate to have found them.
This song makes me feel nostalgic for a time in my life I'm not sure even existed. A time so bittersweet and precious that I wonder how I can move beyond it some days. I can feel the loss of so many things right now, and despite my own tears, this song gives me comfort. I am so thankful to have discovered The Chameleons a few years back by chance. I wish more people knew of their music.
This was one of the songs played at my sons dads funeral on Thursday. It was so fitting as we took him back to his hometown of Middleton n because he was a roadie for the chameleons in their early days. It is a lovely song for a funeral
Of all the great bands of Manchester Chameleons are perhaps the most underrated, but this and swamp thing are as good as anything the more famous bands produced. Preaching to the converted by writing that here though i guess!
Just found out about this band and I grew up in the late 70's to 80's but was in America where these guys got no airplay. Thanks to youtube though and you awesome people I now know about this song and their others that I really really like, thanks!
This is beautiful. I can play it over and over and over again. I want to see the Chameleons again!!! They played in the US a few years ago and a group of fans from Manchester followed the tour.
The final verse should never have been exclusive to this alternate version of 'Tears'. They are timelessly perfect lyrics about never forgetting a loved one and carrying their spirit forth with you in life. It's Absolutely Devastating, yet Undeniably Hopeful.
back in the day , I loved this song ,simply for the beautiful harmonies & musical composition , 20 years later , I'm listening to the lyrics & realizing that this song is my current mantra
they never sold out. brilliant music. some of the best. Maybe the best alternative music ever. They always played this at the end of the night because what do you play after perfection?
I had never heard the first version before so thank you for that. But the second version and the last verse are what separates this song from others. This song can make you laugh and cry at the same time.
hearing this just now brought the tears . . . I hope they play both of these at my funeral as it certainly conveys the spirit of my early twenties. I was all in on this "difficult third album" upon its release and it got many many plays - revisited the Lp earlier this year and it did not disappoint. I hope many of you have an album let alone a song that can vault you back to that simpler time in your life . . .
they should have been the beatles of the 80s but it is a bit nice they never sold out i do wish the band members had more money they deserve it but its cool to be one of the few who has listened to them 25 years
A most stunning event..beautiful. Burgess was fabulous..have tickets for 2020 but alas it's not to be. I can however go to another country on a jam packed beach and catch a disease and bring it back to the UK..but I can't go to a concert...mmmm..strange times...
i am straight up not having a good time the bonus album version of tears is one of my favorite songs . also exactly 0 people i know listen to the chameleons WHO am i supposed to complain about this to ?????
Wow galing talaga! Very atmospheric! Para kang dinala sa ibang lugar sa Europe na blue and black with lots of fog and uncertainty. Nakakatakot pero parang gusto mo. Kasi you can feel your inner self.
There are some songs that hit you bone-deep. They hit that weird prenatal space of your brain and heart that have existed as long as you have. Maybe it’s spiritual. I feel like this is one of the few songs I’ve heard which does that to me.
a song of contemplation about the somewhat impossibility of making a stand for God, to the point it cries to grieve "Will the (holy) ghost just stop! -following me" wrestles on faith, "Now drawn around into the Son He was the only one Who calls out to everyone for his only Son" --but on the second (electric) version, there's a climax where he'd made peace with God,
I guess you can view the song that way.... suit the lyrics to your personal need/ interpretation. But if you listen closely to the original album version (first one), the part that says "ghosts"... plural so definitely not the holy one.... but likely a haunting or even demonic experiences or a bad habit the lyricist wants to flee from. Now the part "Now drawn into sun" could actually be "Son"... that actually makes more sense and meaning. The whole song expressing disbelief in coincidence....the lyricist gotta believe in God, the divine, the supernatural. The ending expresses "It's just coincidence, you say, but I don't believe in it." (It's sad that some sites have corrupted the lyrics to say the opposite: "It's just coincidence. Don't believe in him (God)".... probably for the atheist fans. Funny when I heard this in high school in 'pinas I thought it said "Hallowed be" but actually "How will it be?", lol.
i think u are refering to tony fletcher the bands x manager dont know when exactly he passed but the ep after strange times is called tony fletcher walkes on water thats all about him if i recal he was there for strange times

A December night again, and I find myself here with this song. The first Chameleons song I ever heard in '86, thank you Miss Roebuck.
Nicely sang and full of reality . every pain i had sung this song
This song is effortlessly beautiful and bittersweet. What a masterpiece. I am so grateful it came into my life. Why are we young for such a short amount of time? Why does life seem to pick up the pace as we grow older?
What else can you say about 80s music? Simply the best. Right?

popular music has been going to hell since 1970..this band was never popular..go figure
Goosebumps everytime
Not many songs can accomplish that
Thanks for sharing the back story. Chameleons for life and beyond
agree
It's about losing someone close to you..
One of Mark's best friends died prior to making this album and he put his emotions into this song.
My beautiful cat Che died last year. She was 17. I have a plaque on her favourite bench. The words are an adaptation of Tears.
@@notlob23 Sorry about your loss. May she RIP.

That’s precise. This song IS life itself.

Two of the most beautiful and haunting versions of a song ever...
Still just as beautiful in 2018♡♡♡
One of my favorite songs of all time.. Ritz NYC, 1986, with my buddy Matt Pinfied who loves this record
RIP John Lever so sad....

Adoro esta canción de uno de los mejores grupos que ha parido la música .
One of my top 5 favorite bands, so glad they are touring this fall
susie davidson Really? OMG! I hope they play San Franciscio.
i think Chameleonsvox are playing SF in september 2017
Just saw them two days ago in Denver and cried to this 🥹
Indeed...it,s so unbelievabel moving !!!
The second one is much fucking better. It has the real sound of the chameleons
Finally bought Script of the Bridge. Had Tears been on this album it would exceed Sgt Pepper in my top 10.albums.
Michael Thompson I never thought Sgt Pepper was that good.. I much preferred Magical Mystery Tour..

I like how the acoustic version has a more Victorian ambience, and the bridge seems to be in major key instead of minor. I could be wrong though.
I agree :)

--but on the second (electric) version, there's a climax
where he'd made peace with God,
Christopher Banez Lim ONLY WISH MARK DOES MAKE PEACE WITH GOD INSTEAD OF FRUITLESSLY CHASING ALIENS.. 😢
"Ghost," not "Holy," you are stretching/reaching. Very simply, life was less chaotic and precious when he was younger. Wahi' Valleys

One for my funeral... just coincidence? I don't believe it...
don't believe in coincidence . you are just right
TNX!!!!!!
nice one
What album does the second version come from?,seems it has added lyrics as well at the end, which is a bonus.
It’s the single version and it was also a bonus track on the Strange Times CD.
any change of adding the 3rd version :) love that version too
I don't think I've heard the 3rd version. Got a link to it online?
The 3rd version is in the 2002 album "This never ending now"
The first i heard it was the mid_80s ,especially the electric version
January 2020 ✌❤
Don't see the point of the acoustic version. It's the guitars and their chorus/flanger effects that do 50% of the job here. The bass too.
333rd like.
Who else imagines a gay music video to this song
Written by the brothers Gibb? Wow.
yeah, that was news to me too! Shurely shome mistake
Average.
